What drove it
Rotation into IT stocks
Technology shares did most of the lifting. HDFC Sky's opening report said disappointing quarterly results from Alphabet, Amazon and Intel had triggered a tech selloff on Wall Street, and that investors rotated into Indian IT stocks. Kotak Neo likewise noted that US stocks closed lower on Thursday as investors reassessed big tech's AI spending. The Sunday Guardian pointed to expectations that Indian IT firms could benefit from outsourcing and automation demand. The Nifty IT index ended 2.32% higher, the strongest sectoral move cited in Upstox's closing report.
Earnings: Trent up, Coal India down
Trent, the Tata group retailer, was among the top gainers. Kotak Neo reported that its consolidated net profit for the September quarter rose 25% to ₹468.09 crore from ₹373.42 crore a year earlier, while revenue from operations grew 22% to ₹5,873 crore and EBITDA rose 37% to ₹785 crore. The stock closed up 5.44%.
Coal India moved the other way, closing 1.04% lower at ₹389.00 after touching ₹380.40 during the session, according to Yahoo Finance data. The Sunday Guardian said its September-quarter earnings were below market expectations.
Oil prices and the rupee
High crude prices remained a headwind for an oil-importing economy. The Sunday Guardian put Brent crude at $116.20 a barrel at about 04:22 UTC (9:52 am IST), and HDFC Sky reported Brent at $116.54 in its morning update; neither report specified the contract month. The Sunday Guardian listed high crude oil prices, weak global cues and Middle East tension among the factors weighing on sentiment.
Fund flows
Provisional exchange data for the previous session, Oct 29, showed foreign institutional investors were net sellers of ₹943.60 crore in the cash market, while domestic institutions were net buyers of ₹1,924.41 crore, according to Kotak Neo's FII/DII table. Upstox said buying by investors in large caps supported Friday's indices while profit-taking hit small and mid-cap stocks. Final figures for Oct 30 were not yet available at the time of writing.
Political & policy watch
- US Federal Reserve: The Fed held its benchmark rate at 3.75%–4.00% at its Oct 27–28 meeting, HDFC Sky reported, which also noted that the ECB and Bank of Japan kept rates unchanged. US rates matter for India through foreign portfolio flows and the rupee.
- Reserve Bank of India: The RBI website showed the policy repo rate at 5.50%. The next Monetary Policy Committee meeting is scheduled for Dec 2–4, 2026, according to the RBI's published calendar.
- Middle East and oil supply: HDFC Sky's morning report linked elevated Brent prices to Middle East tensions, including US–Iran developments and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz; it said a Reuters report it cited on Iran's position could not be independently verified. The Sunday Guardian also cited renewed US–Iran conflict and energy supply worries as market risks.
What to watch next
- Reliance Industries Q2 FY27 results: Reliance's board was scheduled to meet on Oct 30, 2026 to consider quarterly results and a possible private placement of non-convertible debentures, Angel One reported. The market reaction will show up in the next session.
- Monday, Nov 2, 2026: Next NSE and BSE trading session after the weekend (open 03:45 UTC, close 10:00 UTC).
- Final FPI data: Depository (NSDL) figures for October will confirm or revise the provisional exchange flow numbers.
- Dec 2–4, 2026: RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting.
- Dec 8–9, 2026: US Federal Reserve FOMC meeting, with a Summary of Economic Projections, according to the Fed's calendar.
Risk checklist for readers
- Earnings season is in full swing; single results, such as Trent's or Coal India's, can move individual stocks and sector indices sharply in one session.
- Crude oil is a major swing factor for India's trade balance, inflation and the rupee. When reading oil prices, check which benchmark and contract month a report refers to.
- Index gains can hide weak breadth: on Oct 30 large caps rose while smallcaps fell, so compare the Sensex and Nifty with broader indices.
- Provisional FII/DII numbers published by the exchanges are preliminary and can differ from final depository data.
- Rupee quotes vary by source and time: the FBIL reference rate, the onshore close and international quotes are different measures.
- For official figures, check NSE, BSE, the RBI and company filings directly rather than relying on social media posts.
Frequently asked questions
Why did the Sensex rise on October 30, 2026?
On October 30, 2026 the Sensex rose 0.42% to 74,459.53 as IT and pharma stocks gained. The Nifty IT index jumped 2.32% after a tech selloff on Wall Street prompted a rotation into Indian IT shares, HDFC Sky reported, and Trent rose 5.44% after a 25% rise in quarterly profit. Banks and smallcaps fell.
What is the difference between the Sensex and the Nifty 50?
The Sensex tracks 30 large companies listed on BSE, while the Nifty 50 tracks 50 large companies on the National Stock Exchange. Both are weighted by free-float market capitalisation, so heavyweights such as Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank and large IT firms move them the most.
Why do oil prices matter for Indian stocks?
India imports most of the crude oil it uses, so higher oil prices raise the import bill, can push up inflation and tend to weaken the rupee. That can weigh on companies that use fuel heavily and on investor sentiment, while lower oil prices generally ease those pressures.
