India Nifty slips 0.39% to 22,600: West Asia oil risk weighs (Oct 23)
Indian stocks recovered from steep intraday losses but still closed lower for a fourth session, as West Asia oil risk, foreign selling and a jump in India VIX hit banks, metals and smaller companies.

Session recap
Sensex and Nifty today ended lower for a fourth day, but well off their worst levels. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,600.00 and the Sensex at 73,123.83, as oil-related worries and foreign selling weighed on sentiment, according to Business Standard and Zee Business.
The day swung sharply. The Sensex opened 416.25 points higher at 73,665.64 and the Nifty at 22,742.20, helped by gains in IT stocks, India TV reported. By the afternoon, PTI figures carried by ETV Bharat showed the Sensex down 730.30 points at 72,519.09 and the Nifty down 260.75 points at 22,426.90. Both indices then recovered part of that loss into the 15:30 IST (10:00 UTC) close. In the previous session, on October 22, the Sensex lost 460.30 points and the Nifty 123.70 points (see our October 22 India brief).

Breadth was much weaker than the headline indices suggested. Business Standard reported that the Nifty MidCap 100 fell 2.21% and the Nifty SmallCap 100 fell 2.94%. Zee Business said Nifty Metal (−2.71%) and Nifty Realty (−2.38%) led sector losses, with Tata Steel down 3.33% and Adani Ports down 2.74%. Hindalco Industries and Adani Enterprises were also among the Nifty's top losers (Business Standard). On the positive side, TCS, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro, HDFC Bank and Eternal were among the Sensex gainers (ETV Bharat).
What drove it
Oil and West Asia tensions
Crude was again the main theme. Business Standard said the indices fell as oil surged on concerns about supply disruptions from West Asia. Houthi strikes on Saudi targets pushed Brent above $111 this week (Oilprice.com), and ETV Bharat said it reached $114 during India's morning. As a major crude importer, India faces a bigger import bill, a weaker rupee and inflation pressure when oil rises. Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, told India TV that a sustained rise in oil could squeeze corporate margins, especially in energy-intensive sectors.
Brent then fell sharply around 07:00 UTC (12:30 IST), dropping from above $114 to near $109 within an hour, according to Yahoo Finance hourly data. TradingKey attributed the decline to profit-taking and a reassessment of the geopolitical risk premium. No wire service had confirmed a specific trigger at the time of writing. Indian indices recovered from their afternoon lows later in the session, but no source has directly linked that rebound to the oil move.
Foreign selling and domestic support
Foreign institutions turned net sellers on October 22, a day after buying, while domestic institutions kept buying. ETV Bharat cited foreign fund outflows as one reason for weakness. Hitesh Tailor, technical research analyst at Choice Broking, said recent price action showed "tentative buying at lower levels," but added that continued FII selling and elevated volatility could keep traders selective (ETV Bharat).
IT stocks and earnings season
IT stocks offered support. Infosys rose 3.21% in early trade and led Sensex gainers, with TCS and HCL Tech also higher (India TV). Business Standard listed Infosys, Tata Motors and Adani Power among 75 companies scheduled to report September-quarter results on October 23; their figures were not verified at writing.
Global markets and volatility
Global cues were mixed to weak. India TV reported Japan's Nikkei 225 down 1.36% and South Korea's Kospi down 2.05% in early Asian trade after AI and technology stocks sold off on Wall Street (see our Japan brief for October 23 and US stocks brief). The rise in India VIX shows traders paying more for protection against large swings.
Political & policy watch
- Monetary policy: The RBI's policy repo rate stands at 5.50%, according to the central bank's website. SCC Online reported that the RBI raised the rate by 25 basis points on October 7 and moved its stance to "calibrated tightening."
- West Asia: Attacks on Saudi targets and tankers in the Gulf remain the main geopolitical risk for oil-importing India (Oilprice.com). US President Donald Trump said on October 22 that Washington was not negotiating with Iran (see our report).
- Trade: Trump said on October 21 that an India–US trade deal is "pretty close," ETV Bharat reported. No signed text or timeline has been published.
- Capital markets: The Jio Platforms IPO closes on October 23, with a tentative listing date of October 28 on NSE and BSE, according to Groww. Forex traders told Business Standard on October 22 that the issue had improved near-term dollar liquidity.

Risk checklist for readers
- Headline indices can hide broad weakness. On October 23 the Nifty fell 0.39%, while the midcap and smallcap indices fell more than 2%.
- Oil is a key swing factor for Indian assets. Gulf security headlines can move crude by several percent within an hour, as Brent did on Friday.
- India VIX measures expected volatility over the next 30 days. A rising VIX signals larger expected swings, not a market direction.
- Provisional FII/DII figures are early estimates. Depository (NSDL) FPI data, released later, is the fuller record and can differ.
- Currency risk matters for overseas readers: a weaker rupee reduces the value of Indian assets when measured in dollars.
- Earnings and post-close figures can shift quickly. Check company filings and NSE, BSE and RBI releases for final numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What is India VIX?
India VIX is NSE's volatility index. It is calculated from Nifty 50 option prices and shows how much movement traders expect over the next 30 days. A higher reading means larger expected swings, not a particular direction.
What is the RBI reference rate for the rupee?
It is the official daily USD/INR benchmark published by Financial Benchmarks India (FBIL) each business day and shown on the Reserve Bank of India website. It is used to value contracts and is not the same as the rupee's closing spot rate in the interbank market.
Why can the Nifty fall less than midcap and smallcap indices?
The Nifty 50 tracks the 50 largest NSE-listed companies, weighted by free-float market value. When a few heavyweights such as IT companies rise, they can cushion the index even while most smaller stocks fall, so breadth and broader indices give a fuller picture.
