Session recap

The Sensex and Nifty today extended their slide as higher oil prices and Gulf security fears weighed on importers and consumer stocks. India imports most of its crude, so expensive oil tends to pressure the rupee, inflation and corporate margins together. The Nifty 50 opened lower at 22,687.75, according to India TV. It then traded between 22,554.85 and 22,785.00 before settling almost exactly where it opened. The Sensex ranged from 73,005.11 to 73,720.83 (Yahoo Finance). In the previous session on October 21, the Sensex lost 143.21 points to 73,709.69 and the Nifty lost 77.60 points to 22,811.35, according to a PTI report carried by DT Next (see our previous India brief). Next session: our India stocks brief for Oct. 23.

Breadth was weak: ChiniMandi said the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices each lost about 1%. Power Grid, Bharat Electronics and Maruti Suzuki were among the Sensex's biggest drags (Punjab Kesari).

What drove it

Oil and Gulf security

Crude was the main driver. Saudi Arabia's energy ministry said debris from an intercepted drone fell near a processing plant at the Shaybah field on Wednesday, killing two people, but that operations were not affected, as reported by The National. The same report said a separate attack hit King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, and Washington ordered non-emergency staff to leave Saudi Arabia. Brent was near $111.66 by India's close; a Zee Business closing report cited crude above $112 alongside losses in Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank. Higher oil widens India's import bill and raises fuel costs, and Punjab Kesari said auto, FMCG and metal stocks saw the heaviest selling.

Regional risk-off and global rates

Asian markets were sharply lower during India's morning session. India TV reported the Nikkei 225 down 1.70%, the Hang Seng down 2.76% and the Kospi down 2.68% at the time of writing, as momentum faded in the US technology rally. Punjab Kesari also cited firmer US bond yields as a drag on sentiment. Higher US yields can make emerging-market assets relatively less attractive to global investors.

Currency

The rupee gave back much of Wednesday's gain. On October 21, PTI reported that the rupee had risen 48 paise to a six-week high of 94.43, helped by dollar inflows tied to the Jio Platforms IPO and RBI intervention. Analyst Gaurav Garg of Lemonn told PTI that crude prices and RBI action would decide whether that recovery holds. On Thursday the oil spike pushed it back to about 94.82.

Flows and the Jio Platforms IPO

Provisional NSE data showed both foreign and domestic institutions as net buyers on October 21 (Kotak Neo). The Jio Platforms IPO drew strong demand, with the retail quota filled early on day two (Business Standard). Large IPOs can temporarily absorb secondary-market liquidity, but that effect on Thursday has not been quantified.

Expiry and sentiment

Thursday was a weekly Sensex derivatives expiry, which Punjab Kesari said added to volatility. Deepesh Sarawagi of Choice Broking told India TV before the open that the near-term outlook "remains defensive," as improved institutional flows had not yet produced stronger price momentum. No single company result was reported as the main cause of the move.

Political & policy watch

  • Monetary policy: The RBI raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7 and shifted its stance to "calibrated tightening," according to SCC Online. The next MPC meeting is December 2–4, per the RBI's published schedule.
  • Gulf security: The Saudi incidents and the US staff drawdown are the main geopolitical risks for an oil-importing economy. Saudi authorities said Shaybah's output was not affected (The National).
  • Trade: US President Donald Trump said on October 21 that an India–US trade deal is "pretty close," ETV Bharat reported. No signed text or timeline has been published.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Oil is a key swing factor for Indian assets. Geopolitical headlines from the Gulf can move crude, the rupee and equities within hours.
  • Expiry days for index derivatives can bring sharper intraday swings that do not always reflect a change in fundamentals.
  • Provisional FII/DII figures are early estimates. Depository (NSDL) FPI data, published later, is the more complete record and can differ.
  • Currency risk matters for overseas readers: a weaker rupee can reduce returns on Indian assets when measured in dollars or other currencies.
  • Large IPOs can shift liquidity and sentiment for a few days. Subscription multiples describe demand, not future performance.
  • Scheduled events such as the Fed decision and the RBI meeting can reprice interest-rate expectations quickly.
  • Check official exchange (NSE, BSE) and RBI releases for final figures; media and data-provider numbers taken right after the close can be revised.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Sensex and the Nifty 50?

The Sensex tracks 30 large companies listed on BSE, while the Nifty 50 tracks 50 large companies listed on NSE. Both are weighted by free-float market capitalisation, so the biggest stocks have the most influence on daily moves.

Why do oil prices affect Indian stocks and the rupee?

India imports most of the crude oil it uses. Higher oil prices raise the import bill, increase demand for dollars and can push up inflation and costs for companies such as automakers, airlines and consumer goods makers.

What are FII and DII flows?

FIIs (foreign institutional investors) and DIIs (domestic institutional investors such as mutual funds and insurers) report daily net purchases or sales. NSE publishes provisional figures after each session; depository data on foreign portfolio investment follows later and can differ.
