One other report put the Sensex fall at about 920 points, probably an intraday figure. We use the closing figures that match across two sources. Sector figures come from a single source.

What drove it

Banks and lenders

Financials did most of the damage. MarketsMojo attributed the selling to profit-taking in private banks and non-bank lenders amid concerns about rising credit costs and slower loan growth. Yes Bank fell 3.87%. State-owned banks went the other way: Punjab National Bank rose 4.78% and the PSU Bank index gained 2.46%, as domestic institutions bought defensive names. Thirty-seven of 38 sectors tracked by MarketsMojo ended lower.

Foreign selling and global rates

FPI outflows have been the defining feature of 2026. Citing depository data, PTI reported Rs 52,100 crore of net FPI selling in October so far, after Rs 35,861 crore in September, and Rs 3.12 lakh crore for the year, compared with Rs 1.66 lakh crore in all of 2025. Analysts quoted by PTI blamed elevated US bond yields, a strong dollar and high crude prices, and said the AI-led rally in North Asian markets has been drawing money away from India. FPIs briefly turned buyers on October 16, which one analyst called tactical.

Oil and the rupee

India imports most of its crude, so Brent above $100 a barrel weighs on the trade balance and on inflation. The rupee had gained about 2% in the week to October 16 after the Reserve Bank of India introduced measures to curb spot dollar demand, PTI reported. It slipped 3 paise on October 19 as stocks fell. Foreign-exchange reserves fell $8.578 billion to $726.027 billion in the week to October 9.

Political & policy watch

RBI tightening

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously on October 7 to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and, by a majority, changed its stance to "calibrated tightening," according to summaries of the policy statement; two members preferred a neutral stance. The standing deposit facility rate is 5.25% and the marginal standing facility rate 5.75%. The next MPC meeting is scheduled for December 2–4. Later in the week, the Nifty slipped to 22,600; see our India brief for Oct. 23.

US–India trade talks

The two governments announced an interim trade framework in February 2026, according to a White House joint statement, but a broader deal has not been signed. Sources disagree on the tariff rate that currently applies to Indian goods, partly because of later changes to US tariff law, so we do not cite a single figure. On October 20, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in India meeting External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, President Trump said a deal between the two sides was "pretty close," ETV Bharat reported. He gave no timetable.

A very large IPO

Jio Platforms' initial public offering is open for subscription from October 21 to 23, with a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 a share and a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares, according to the issue details published by brokers. At the top of the band that is about Rs 30,213 crore. Analysis: an issue this size draws liquidity from the secondary market during the subscription window, which can matter for index heavyweights. This brief does not assess the offer.

What it means

Analysis. India's market is being squeezed from two sides. Externally, high US yields, oil above $100 and the pull of AI-linked markets in North Asia have driven record foreign selling. Domestically, the RBI has turned to tightening to protect the rupee and contain inflation, which raises funding costs for the lenders that dominate the indexes. While India was closed on October 20, Seoul fell sharply and Wall Street was mixed; this adds to the backdrop. Indications before Wednesday's open, reported by Business Standard, pointed to a higher start; those are indications, not results.

Next session: our India stocks brief for October 22 covers how the Sensex and Nifty slipped as Brent crude topped $111.

What to watch next

  • October 21: trading resumes after the holiday; results due from Adani Green Energy, Eternal and Indian Hotels Co.
  • October 21–23: Jio Platforms IPO subscription period; tentative listing on October 28.
  • October 21, after the US close: US tech earnings, which affect Indian IT sentiment.
  • Friday, October 23: RBI's weekly foreign-exchange reserves data.
  • October 27–28: US Federal Reserve meeting.
  • December 2–4: next RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting.
  • Ongoing: any formal text from US–India trade negotiations.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Holiday gaps. When a market is shut, news from other markets builds up and can produce a large move at the next open.
  • Flows versus fundamentals. Heavy foreign selling can push prices down even when company earnings hold up. Daily flow figures are provisional and are often revised.
  • Currency risk. For foreign investors, a weaker rupee reduces returns in dollar terms; for importers, it raises costs.
  • Large IPOs and liquidity. Big share sales can temporarily absorb cash from the market. Grey-market premiums quoted online are unofficial and unregulated.
  • Political statements. Comments that a trade deal is close are not the same as a signed agreement with published terms.
