What drove it
Banks gave up early gains
The Nifty Bank index was up 214.90 points at 54,581.60 in the first hour, Kotak Neo reported, but it closed near its day low of 53,951.20. HDFC Bank fell to ₹680.20 from ₹688.05, and ICICI Bank to ₹1,386.90 from ₹1,403.00, according to Yahoo Finance data. The market reports reviewed did not give a specific reason for the afternoon slide, so the cause has not been confirmed. Before the session, Univest had said that high crude prices and the US Federal Reserve's path were weighing on bank stocks, and it described the Fed decision as a key trigger for the sector this week.
Anthropic IPO filing hits Indian IT, then losses narrow
Indian IT services stocks fell early after Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI models, moved towards a US listing. Lapaas Voice reported that Anthropic filed a registration statement with the US SEC on October 26, and that the Nifty IT index was down 1.5% at 31,796.8 around 11:30 am IST, the weakest sector at that point. Kotak Neo said all 10 Nifty IT stocks were in the red by 11:45 am IST, with TCS down 1.70% and Infosys down 1.26%.
Both outlets linked the fall to renewed interest in AI stocks, especially hardware: Kotak Neo noted that the iShares Semiconductor ETF rose nearly 3%. Lapaas Voice said Nifty IT had gained nearly 14% over six sessions earlier in October on a "reverse AI" trade, which the filing called into question. Infosys's cut to its fiscal 2027 revenue growth forecast also weighed on the sector, according to Lapaas Voice and Equentis. The index recovered most of its losses by the close. Earnings lift consumer, pharma and auto stocks
September-quarter results drove single-stock moves. Tata Consumer Products gained as much as 4.5% after its results, Kotak Neo reported, and was among the top Nifty gainers by late morning, along with Bajaj Auto, Bharat Electronics, Max Healthcare and Trent. Paytm rose 2% after reporting a 976% year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit. Larsen & Toubro, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto, Tata Steel, Cipla and SBI Life Insurance were scheduled to report on Tuesday, according to Kotak Neo.
Oil, rupee and volatility
Crude eased on hopes of a US-Iran deal, Kotak Neo reported; Brent front-month futures were quoted at $110.98 a barrel at 10:07 UTC on Yahoo Finance. The rupee was almost unchanged on the RBI reference rate. India VIX, NSE's gauge of expected 30-day volatility, fell after rising in each of the previous three sessions, suggesting traders paid less for protection.

Risk checklist for readers
- A flat index can hide large moves underneath. On Tuesday, the Nifty Smallcap 500 rose 2.03% while Nifty Bank fell 0.72%, so check sector and breadth data, not only the Nifty or Sensex.
- Index weights matter. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are large weights in both the Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank, so moves in a few lenders can offset gains elsewhere.
- Scheduled events such as the Fed decision on October 28 and a large listing like Jio Platforms can shift liquidity and sentiment quickly.
- India VIX measures expected volatility, not direction. A falling VIX does not mean prices will rise.
- Provisional FII/DII figures are early estimates; NSDL depository data, released later, is the fuller record and can differ.
- Intraday figures in news reports change during the day. Compare them with exchange closing data from NSE and BSE before drawing conclusions.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Nifty 50 down today?
On October 27, 2026 the Nifty 50 slipped 0.02% to 22,749.75. Bank stocks were the main drag: the Nifty Bank index fell 0.72%, with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank each down more than 1%, according to Yahoo Finance data. What is the Nifty Bank index?
Nifty Bank is an NSE index of the most liquid and largest Indian bank stocks. Large private lenders such as HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank carry heavy weights, so their moves strongly influence both Nifty Bank and the broader Nifty 50.
What is India VIX?
India VIX is NSE's volatility index. It estimates how much traders expect the Nifty 50 to move over the next 30 days, based on Nifty option prices. A higher reading means more expected volatility; it does not indicate whether prices will rise or fall.
