Key takeaways

  • The Nikkei 225 fell 2.12%, or 1,369.36 points, to 63,290.11 at the Tokyo close (06:30 UTC) on Friday, Oct 30, 2026, ending a three-session winning streak, according to Jiji Press closing data.
  • The broader TOPIX lost 0.95% to 3,965.07 at the same 06:30 UTC close, a smaller drop that shows the damage was concentrated in heavyweight chip and AI-linked stocks.
  • Advantest fell 5.86%, Tokyo Electron 5.19%, SoftBank Group 5.96% and Kioxia 7.14%, based on Yahoo Finance daily closes, after Alphabet's cash-flow figures revived worries about returns on AI spending.
  • The Bank of Japan kept its policy rate at around 1.25% in an 8-1 vote announced at 03:02 UTC, and decided to more than double the pace of its ETF sales to about 860 billion yen a year from January 2027.
  • Despite Friday's drop, the Nikkei 225 still gained 0.95% over the week, from 62,693.16 on Oct 23 to 63,290.11 on Oct 30, according to Yahoo Finance data.

Yahoo Finance data put the Nikkei's intraday range at 62,711.42 to 64,589.04, so the index recovered part of its loss before the close; Jiji Press said the afternoon rebound was only slight. Breadth was negative but less lopsided than the index move suggests: 2,036 Tokyo-listed stocks fell, 1,477 rose and 214 were unchanged, according to Investing.com's closing report.

The gap between a 2.12% fall in the price-weighted Nikkei 225 and a 0.95% fall in the market-cap-weighted TOPIX is typical of chip-led sell-offs, because a few high-priced stocks carry outsized weight in the Nikkei. Our explainer on the Nikkei 225 vs TOPIX difference covers how the two indexes are built.

What drove it

AI spending worries after U.S. tech earnings

The main trigger was overnight weakness in U.S. technology shares. Alphabet's Class A stock fell 12.64% to $283.82 at the Oct 29 U.S. close and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 1.38% to 26,184.72, according to Yahoo Finance daily data. Jiji Press reported that investors again questioned returns on AI-linked investment after Alphabet posted negative free cash flow, and that Amazon and Intel were sold in after-hours trading after their results. Our earlier piece on Big Tech earnings dates and AI capex set out why these reports mattered for Asian suppliers.

"The Japanese stock market is being affected by this fall in US technology shares," Maki Sawada of Nomura Securities told Reuters, according to Invezz.

Chip and AI stocks led the losses

Based on Yahoo Finance daily closes, Advantest dropped 5.86% to 34,860 yen, Tokyo Electron fell 5.19% to 9,514 yen, SoftBank Group lost 5.96% to 4,481 yen and memory maker Kioxia slid 7.14% to 13,470 yen. Lasertec fell 8.81% to 37,700 yen. Among the Nikkei's biggest decliners, Investing.com listed Fujitsu down 16.20% and Ibiden down 15.21%; the reports reviewed did not detail company-specific causes for those two moves.

Not every sector fell. Konami Group jumped 15.02%, Oriental Land rose 8.45% and ANA Holdings gained 6.31%, according to Investing.com, while Hitachi edged up 0.45% to 5,094 yen and Sony Group rose to 3,958 yen from 3,936 yen, per Yahoo Finance.

Weekend positioning and regional contagion

A securities official quoted by Jiji Press said many investors stepped aside before the weekend, with many Japanese companies due to report earnings and U.S. midterm elections due next week. The sell-off was sharper in Seoul: the KOSPI closed down 3.48% at 5,730.74 on Oct 30, according to Yahoo Finance and TradingKey.

Bank of Japan and the yen

The BoJ decision, released at 12:02 Tokyo time (03:02 UTC) during the lunch break, held rates as expected and did little to change the market's direction. The yen was little changed: USD/JPY stood at 157.57 at 06:30 UTC, versus 157.83 at the Oct 29 daily close, per Yahoo Finance. Japan's 10-year government bond yield eased to 2.761% from 2.842%, according to Investing.com daily data read at 09:30 UTC; the sources reviewed did not attribute the bond move to a single cause.

Political & policy watch

  • BoJ holds at 1.25%, with one dissent. The BoJ's Statement on Monetary Policy shows an 8-1 vote to keep the overnight call rate at around 1.25%. Board member Hajime Takata dissented and proposed raising it to around 1.5%, arguing that underlying inflation had reached the price-stability target.
  • Faster ETF sales. In a unanimous vote, the BoJ raised the pace of sales of its exchange-traded fund holdings from about 330 billion yen to about 860 billion yen a year (book value), or about 0.1% of market trading value, starting January 2027. The BoJ estimates that equals about 2,460 billion yen at market value and that it would take about 43 years to complete sales, versus about 112 years at the old pace. J-REIT sales stay at about 5 billion yen a year.
  • U.S. politics. Jiji Press cited the U.S. midterm elections next week as one reason investors were cautious heading into the weekend.

What to watch next

  • Nov 2, 2026, 14:00 JST (05:00 UTC): Full text of the BoJ's October Outlook Report, according to the BoJ release schedule.
  • Nov 3, 2026: U.S. midterm elections.
  • Nov 10, 2026, 08:50 JST (Nov 9, 23:50 UTC): Summary of Opinions from the October BoJ meeting.
  • Dec 17–18, 2026: Next BoJ Monetary Policy Meeting, followed by Jan 21–22, 2027, per the BoJ schedule.
  • Coming weeks: Japanese quarterly earnings season continues, which Jiji Press said was keeping investors cautious.

Risk checklist for readers

  • The Nikkei 225 is price-weighted, so a handful of chip stocks such as Advantest and Tokyo Electron can move it far more than the TOPIX; compare both indexes before drawing conclusions.
  • Japanese chip shares often react overnight to U.S. technology earnings and the Nasdaq, so U.S. reporting dates are scheduled sources of volatility.
  • BoJ statements, the Summary of Opinions and dissenting votes can shift rate expectations and the yen; read the original BoJ documents rather than headlines alone.
  • Changes in BoJ ETF selling affect supply of Japanese equities over years, not days; the official documents give the size and timing.
  • For foreign investors, yen moves change returns in their home currency, independent of the stock move itself.
  • Data providers can show slightly different closing figures; exchange or official closing data should be the reference.
