Session recap

US stocks ended October with a broad tech-led sell-off on Friday, October 30, as disappointing results from Intel, Amazon and others deepened doubts about the payoff from heavy artificial-intelligence spending. For the wider picture across regions, see Asian and global markets today; the previous session is covered in our US stocks brief for October 29, when Alphabet's 12.6% slide pulled the Nasdaq down 1.38%.

Changes are calculated from the October 29 closes (S&P 500 7,720.39; Nasdaq 26,184.72; Dow 52,342.56; Russell 2000 2,859.22; VIX 17.20). Treasury par yields are the official end-of-day curve, based on bids at roughly 3:30 p.m. New York time.

The damage was concentrated in technology. The Nasdaq's 2.86% fall was its worst single-day performance since June, CNBC reported, and capped a monthly decline of 5.3%, the index's steepest since March 2025, according to the same report. The VIX, a gauge of expected S&P 500 volatility over the next 30 days, rose 2.22 points to 19.42. Small caps did not escape: after gaining 1.01% on Thursday, the Russell 2000 gave back 1.66%.

What drove it

Intel's outlook and the chip sell-off

Intel sank almost 29% after it forecast profit for the current quarter below analysts' expectations, the AP reported, even though its latest quarterly results beat estimates. Yahoo Finance tied the weak outlook to slowing PC sales and high memory prices. Chip stocks followed: CNBC said Advanced Micro Devices fell close to 11%, Sandisk 13% and Broadcom 5%, while the AP said Nvidia's 4.9% drop made it one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500. Joe Tigay of Equity Armor Investments told the AP: "We're moving out of the hopes and dreams phase of the AI trade and into the 'show me' phase."

Big tech earnings and AI spending

Amazon closed down 1.41% at $240.35 after third-quarter revenue of $201.9 billion and earnings of $1.89 a share missed analyst estimates, according to The Motley Fool. Amazon Web Services grew 39%, but free cash flow over the trailing 12 months was an outflow of $42.4 billion as the company kept its $220 billion capital-spending target for 2026, the same report said. A day earlier, Alphabet's revenue miss had triggered its worst drop in more than 20 years; our earlier piece on big-tech earnings dates and the AI spending question set out why investors were focused on capital spending this week.

The sell-off reached other platforms. Yahoo Finance reported that Reddit fell about 24% on weaker daily active users and a soft revenue forecast, and that Roblox dropped about 16% as daily active users fell 9% year on year. Our guide on how to read an earnings report explains why forward guidance often moves a stock more than the headline result.

Crypto shock

Bitcoin fell below $77,000 after a hack at Binance that affected more than $6 billion in crypto, the AP reported. Crypto-linked shares followed: Coinbase fell 13.6% and Strategy lost 8.3%, according to the AP. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said the exchange would cover all losses from the hack, Yahoo Finance reported.

Defensive and energy gains

Not everything fell. Exxon rose 1.8% and Chevron 1.7% after stronger-than-expected results, the AP reported, and CNBC said both reached all-time highs. Mondelez gained 4% and Colgate-Palmolive 2.9%, according to the AP, while CNBC said Walmart and Coca-Cola each rose more than 1%. Brent crude rose 2.4% to $113.43 a barrel on Friday, October 30, according to the AP's closing report, which did not specify the contract.

Wages, inflation and bonds

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said on October 30 that compensation costs for civilian workers rose 0.8% in the three months to September, with wages and salaries up 0.7%. Over 12 months, compensation rose 3.4%. The release followed the Bureau of Economic Analysis report on October 29 showing the PCE price index up 3.6% from a year earlier in September, yet Treasury yields still fell on Friday: the 10-year par yield closed at 4.940%, US Treasury data show. Our explainer on how the 10-year Treasury yield works covers why that matters for stock valuations.

Political & policy watch

  • Federal Reserve: After the Fed held rates on October 28 in a split vote, St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said rates need to rise to curb inflation, Yahoo Finance reported. The outlet said markets expect a rate increase in December; no official decision is due before then.
  • Bank of Japan: The BOJ held its policy rate at 1.25%, and the yen strengthened to 157.115 per dollar, Reuters reported via Yahoo Finance. Yen moves can affect global funding flows into US and Asian assets.
  • US midterm elections: Voters go to the polls on Tuesday, November 3. Control of Congress affects the outlook for fiscal policy, tariffs and spending bills.
  • Crypto oversight: Chainalysis said investigators were seeing laundering patterns never seen before in the Binance case, according to Yahoo Finance. The case is likely to keep exchange security and regulation in focus.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Concentration risk: a few large tech companies carry big weights in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, so earnings from one or two of them can swing the whole index, as Intel and Nvidia did on October 30.
  • Volatility gauges: the VIX measures expected, not realized, volatility; a jump like Friday's 12.91% shows rising demand for protection, not a forecast of direction.
  • Guidance versus results: a company can beat estimates and still fall on a weak outlook, so read the forecast section of earnings releases.
  • Inflation and rates: wage costs, the November 6 jobs report and the November 10 CPI can shift expectations for the Fed's December meeting.
  • Crypto contagion: exchange hacks can hit crypto-linked stocks and broader risk appetite quickly; check official exchange statements before acting on rumors.
  • Global spillover: US yields, the dollar and the yen influence currencies and foreign flows in Asia, including ASEAN markets, so US sessions often set the tone for the next Asian open.
  • Check primary data: confirm figures on bls.gov, bea.gov and treasury.gov, and on company filings with the SEC.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the S&P 500 fall on October 30, 2026?

On October 30, 2026, the S&P 500 fell 1.82% to 7,580.07, its worst day since June, as tech stocks sold off. Intel sank almost 29% on a weak outlook and Nvidia fell 4.9%, according to the AP, as disappointing results from Intel, Amazon and Alphabet deepened doubts about AI spending.

What does the VIX measure?

The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) uses S&P 500 option prices to estimate how much volatility traders expect over the next 30 days. It tends to rise when stocks fall sharply, but it does not predict the direction of the market.

What is the Employment Cost Index?

The Employment Cost Index, published quarterly by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, tracks changes in wages, salaries and benefits paid to workers. The Federal Reserve watches it because labor costs can feed into inflation.
