Key takeaways

  • Super Micro Computer (Nasdaq: SMCI) said on October 20, 2026 that it now expects fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, against guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion issued in August.
  • The company also lifted its estimated gross margin to 12.0%–12.5%, from a guided 10.4%–10.8%, citing customer and product mix. It attributed the revenue increase mainly to "increased demand for AI platforms."
  • The figures are preliminary and unaudited. The company's auditor has not reviewed them, and the full report with earnings per share is due on November 3.
  • Shares rose about 11% in after-hours trading on October 20, from a $32.47 close, according to TIKR. AI hardware peers including Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise also gained in extended trading, according to BigGo Finance.

What the filing says

Super Micro preliminary revenue for fiscal first-quarter 2027 is now expected at $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, above the $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion it guided in August, the company said in a Form 8-K on October 20. It cited "increased demand for AI platforms."

On revenue, the new range of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion sits entirely above the old one. Even the bottom of the new range is $3 billion higher than the top of the guidance the company gave on August 11. The company attributes the increase "primarily" to stronger demand for AI platforms. In practice that means GPU-dense rack systems sold to cloud providers, AI start-ups and large enterprises, which have made up most of Supermicro's growth over the past two years.

On profitability, the company now estimates gross margin of 12.0% to 12.5%, up from guidance of 10.4% to 10.8%. It credits customer and product mix. The filing does not say which customers or products drove that mix, and it gives no estimates for operating expenses, net income or earnings per share.

How the quarter compares with recent results

Supermicro's August 11 release for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 reported net sales of $11.1 billion. That compared with $10.2 billion in the third quarter and $5.8 billion a year earlier. Full-year fiscal 2026 revenue was $39.1 billion, up from $22.0 billion in fiscal 2025. The company also gave a fiscal 2027 revenue outlook of $65 billion to $72 billion.

If the preliminary midpoint of $19.0 billion holds, revenue would rise about 71% from the June quarter. One quarter would then account for roughly 26% to 29% of the full-year outlook range. The new update does not revise the full-year outlook.

Margins have moved a lot from quarter to quarter. The fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 had a GAAP gross margin of 17.5%, which the company had flagged in July as mainly due to favourable customer and product mix. The third quarter came in at 9.9%. The new 12.0%–12.5% estimate is above guidance but well below the June quarter. This fits a pattern that Supermicro's own risk disclosures describe: large AI deployments can lift revenue sharply but carry thinner margins.

Why the shares moved

The update came after the US market close on October 20. TIKR reported that the stock rose about 11% in after-hours trading, to around $36 from a regular-session close of $32.47. GuruFocus also described a gain of more than 10% after hours. BigGo Finance reported that the after-hours gain reached as much as about 15%. Investing.com, in a story updated early on October 21, said the shares were up about 13% in premarket trading. Extended-hours prices are thin and can change sharply before the regular session opens. Data as of 07:04 UTC on October 21, 2026.

The size of the beat explains most of the move. Investing.com put the analyst consensus for quarterly revenue at $14.99 billion. TIKR cited an LSEG average of $15.23 billion, as reported by Reuters. Either way, the new midpoint is roughly $4 billion above what the market had expected. Investing.com quoted Mizuho analysts as saying the update reflects "rapidly increasing server demand and agentic AI tailwinds."

The timing also mattered. Investing.com noted that AI data-centre-linked shares such as CoreWeave and Oracle had been among the weaker names the previous week. TIKR said Supermicro's stock had fallen about 21% from a level of $41.07. A strong demand signal from a major server assembler gave investors a fresh data point against worries about AI spending. For how GPU-focused clouds such as CoreWeave earn money and why they borrow heavily, see what a neocloud is.

Peers in extended trading

According to BigGo Finance, other AI infrastructure names also rose after hours on October 20. Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise each gained more than 5%, CoreWeave and Nebius each rose more than 4%, and Nvidia added 2.1%. Supermicro builds systems around Nvidia and other accelerators and competes with Dell and HPE for AI rack orders. Investors often read a strong quarter at one server maker as a sign of demand across the supply chain. That read-across is an inference, not something Supermicro's filing claims. Peer moves are as reported by BigGo Finance, last updated 07:04 UTC on October 21, 2026.

What remains unaudited

The 8-K carries heavy caveats. The company says the estimates are based on management's current view and are "inherently uncertain and subject to revision" while quarter-end closing procedures continue. Its independent registered public accounting firm has not audited, reviewed or compiled the numbers, or performed any procedures on them. Further adjustments may be found as the financial statements are prepared. The preliminary figures are not a substitute for GAAP statements filed with the SEC.

Several items are still open until the full report:

  • Earnings per share and operating costs. The update gives no EPS estimate, so the effect on net income is unknown.
  • Customer concentration. Supermicro has warned that its customer base may become more concentrated as it targets larger buyers, which could make sales less predictable and margins lower.
  • Export-control review. The August release said the company's board was conducting an independent review of certain transactions related to export-control issues. It also said the outcome could affect forecasts and preliminary results. The October filing does not give an update.
  • Full-year outlook. It is not yet known whether management will change the $65 billion to $72 billion fiscal 2027 outlook.

Supermicro will report full results and hold a conference call on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET (22:00 UTC).

The mood around AI hardware turned within days. See why chip stocks slumped 5.6% to their lowest since July 29 on AI spending fears, and how Meta's credit default swaps hit a record as AI spending leaned on debt.

What it means

The filing is one of the clearest recent signs that AI server orders turned into shipped revenue in the September quarter. Revenue that is about a quarter above the company's own forecast is unusual for a business of this size. It also comes from a supplier whose sales track hyperscale and neocloud capital spending closely. That is why the update spread to Dell, HPE, Nvidia and AI cloud operators in extended trading.

The quality of that growth is less clear. A margin of about 12% is better than guided but lower than the 17.5% posted in June. Supermicro's history of preliminary updates, including a July warning that fourth-quarter revenue would land near the low end of guidance, shows that these numbers can move. Until the audited report on November 3, the key questions remain open: how much of the revenue reached the bottom line, how concentrated the customer base has become, and whether the export-control review has any financial effect.
