Netflix Q3 2026 results: 34.6% margin beat, softer Q4 outlook

Netflix posted a 34.6% operating margin and EPS of $0.87, ahead of its own $0.82 forecast. Guidance for a 26.0% fourth-quarter margin, including about 120 basis points of layoff costs, and a lower ad revenue outlook pushed the shares down about 4% after hours.

Key takeaways

  • Netflix reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $12.87 billion, up 12% year on year, and an operating margin of 34.6%, according to its shareholder letter filed with the SEC on 20 October 2026.
  • Diluted earnings per share were $0.87, against the company's own July forecast of $0.82. Operating income came in about $191 million above that forecast.
  • Netflix said most of the margin beat came from the timing of expenses, which suggests some costs have moved into the fourth quarter rather than disappeared.
  • Fourth-quarter guidance calls for a 26.0% operating margin. That figure includes a negative impact of about 120 basis points from the job cuts announced the week before.
  • Netflix lowered its 2026 advertising revenue outlook to about $2.7 billion, from about $3 billion, and cut its free cash flow forecast to about $12.0 billion. The shares fell about 4% in after-hours trading, according to the Associated Press.

A quarter that met the plan

Netflix Q3 2026 results showed revenue of $12.87 billion, up 12% year on year, and a 34.6% operating margin, with diluted EPS of $0.87 against its own $0.82 forecast. Guidance for a 26.0% fourth-quarter margin and a lower ad revenue outlook weighed on the shares.

Profitability came in stronger. Operating income was $4.46 billion, up 37% from $3.25 billion a year earlier. The operating margin rose to 34.6% from 28.2% in the third quarter of 2025, and it was 1.4 percentage points above the 33.2% Netflix had guided to. Net income reached $3.66 billion, up from $2.55 billion, and diluted earnings per share were $0.87, compared with $0.59 a year earlier.

The result also beat outside expectations. According to the Associated Press, analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected earnings of 82 cents per share on revenue of $12.87 billion.

Where the growth came from

Netflix grew revenue in all four of its regions. Latin America grew fastest in reported terms, while Asia-Pacific grew fastest once currency moves are stripped out.

Why the shares fell anyway

Netflix published the results after the US market closed on Tuesday, 20 October. The Associated Press reported that the shares fell $2.79, or 4.1%, to $65.90 in after-hours trading. The AP also noted that the stock was down about 25% for the year as of Tuesday's close. These were extended-hours prices, which are often thinner and more volatile than prices during the regular session. (Share price data as of about 20:37 UTC on 20 October 2026, as reported by the AP.)

Several parts of the report help explain why investors focused on the outlook rather than the beat.

1. The beat was partly about timing

The letter attributes the margin outperformance mainly to the timing of expenses, together with slightly higher revenue. When costs are delayed rather than avoided, they tend to show up in a later quarter. In practice, part of the third-quarter upside may come back as higher spending in the fourth quarter.

2. A steep seasonal step-down in the fourth quarter

Netflix guided to fourth-quarter revenue of $13.44 billion, up 12% year on year, and operating income of $3.5 billion. That implies an operating margin of 26.0%, compared with 24.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025. Forecast diluted EPS is $0.67, compared with $0.56 a year earlier.

Part of the drop from 34.6% to 26.0% is seasonal. A year earlier, the margin also fell sharply, from 28.2% in the third quarter to 24.5% in the fourth. For the coming quarter, Netflix has also lined up what it calls its biggest quarterly live slate so far, including NFL games and a heavyweight boxing bout.

On revenue, the AP reported that analysts had expected $13.5 billion for the fourth quarter, slightly above Netflix's $13.4 billion forecast. Ross Benes, a senior analyst at Emarketer, told the AP that the guidance "is not as aggressive as investors have grown accustomed to."

3. The cost of the headcount cuts

About a week before the results, Netflix co-chief executives Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos told staff in an internal memo that the company would cut about 1,000 roles, roughly 6% of its workforce. According to an AP report published on 14 October, the cuts were concentrated in product, technology, legal and human resources.

The shareholder letter does not give a dollar figure for severance or restructuring costs. It quantifies the effect only in margin terms: about 120 basis points off the fourth-quarter operating margin and about 30 basis points off the full-year 2026 margin. Without that charge, the fourth-quarter margin guidance would be about 27.2%. Applying 1.2% to the $13.44 billion revenue forecast puts the cost at roughly $160 million. That is a rough calculation from the letter's numbers, not a figure Netflix has disclosed. Netflix said the organisational changes would let it keep investing heavily in the areas it sees as most important for growth.

4. A smaller advertising business than planned

Advertising is one of the newer revenue lines Netflix has highlighted as a growth driver. In July, the company expected about $3 billion of ad revenue in 2026. It now expects about $2.7 billion and attributes the change to a "slightly slower than expected rollout of some ad product capabilities." The letter adds that subscription revenue has done better than expected, which explains why total revenue guidance changed far less than the ad target. Netflix also said the ad tier will launch in 15 more countries in 2027, starting in March.

The full-year revenue forecast of about $51.1 billion sits in the lower half of the July range. Netflix kept its 31.5% full-year operating margin target even after absorbing the cost of the job cuts. It said the lower free cash flow forecast mainly reflects a real estate transaction it expects to close in the fourth quarter.

The company also stepped up share repurchases. It bought back 63.9 million shares for $4.8 billion in the third quarter, which it called the largest quarterly buyback in its history, and had $22.3 billion of authorisation remaining. At the end of the quarter it held $8.2 billion in cash and cash equivalents against gross debt of $15.3 billion.

Netflix's rivals are being reshaped by financing too: our report on Elon Musk's reported $1 billion Skydance investment looks at the debt behind the company that now owns Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. For other third-quarter reports, see how Hermès sales growth slowed to 4.3% and why energy companies are driving European Q3 profit growth.

What it means

The quarter shows two things at once. Netflix's core subscription business is still growing at a double-digit rate and converting that growth into higher profits. Operating income rose 37% and net income rose 44% year on year. At the same time, the report trimmed three things investors had been watching: the size of the advertising business this year, near-term cash generation and the pace of revenue growth going into 2027.

The layoffs add a further point of debate. In the short term they reduce the fourth-quarter margin. Their longer-term effect on costs is not quantified in the letter, and the company frames them as a way to redirect money to priority areas rather than as a cost-cutting programme. How the job cuts change spending in 2027 will probably become clearer when Netflix publishes its next shareholder letter and its outlook for 2027.

Several questions remain open. Netflix has not said how much the restructuring will cost in dollars, how the timing-related expenses will be spread across the fourth quarter, or which ad product capabilities are behind schedule. The share reaction cited here reflects after-hours trading on 20 October and may not match how the stock trades during regular sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Did Netflix beat its own forecast?

Yes on profit. In July Netflix forecast a 33.2% operating margin and EPS of $0.82 for the quarter. Revenue was in line with its $12.86 billion forecast. The company said the margin beat was mainly due to the timing of expenses.

Why did Netflix shares fall after the results?

The AP reported a 4.1% after-hours drop on 20 October. The report included a 26.0% fourth-quarter margin forecast, Q4 revenue guidance slightly below analyst expectations, a lower 2026 ad revenue outlook of about $2.7 billion and a reduced free cash flow forecast.

How much do the layoffs cost Netflix?

Netflix did not give a dollar figure. Its letter says the recently announced headcount reductions will lower the Q4 2026 operating margin by about 120 basis points and the full-year margin by about 30 basis points. AP reported the cuts affect about 1,000 roles, roughly 6% of staff.

What is Netflix's full-year 2026 guidance?

Netflix expects revenue of about $51.1 billion, an operating margin of 31.5%, advertising revenue of about $2.7 billion and free cash flow of about $12.0 billion.
