Gold (XAU/USD) daily brief, Oct 20, 2026: oil and Fed bets weigh
Spot gold slipped for a third session to $4,114.40 as Houthi claims of strikes on Saudi energy sites pushed Brent to a five-month high and kept expectations of a December Fed rate hike firm. Silver rose and real yields eased.
Key takeaways
- Spot gold (XAU/USD) closed the October 20 session at $4,114.40 an ounce, down 0.64% and its third losing day in a row, according to Investing.com daily data (as of about 21:00 UTC).
- Front-month COMEX gold futures (December) ended the day at $4,132.45, down 0.66%, per Investing.com. The official CME settlement page could not be retrieved, so it is not shown here.
- Brent crude touched a five-month high of $111.99 before settling at $108.79, down 0.69%. Reuters linked the swings to Houthi claims of strikes on Saudi energy sites and to reports of fresh US-Iran mediation.
- US Treasury data show the 10-year real (inflation-protected) yield eased to 2.77% from 2.80%, and the 10-year nominal yield slipped to 5.12% from 5.15%.
- Silver moved the other way: front-month futures rose 1.14% to $57.928, according to Investing.com.
- The World Gold Council (WGC) reported record global gold ETF holdings of 4,256 tonnes at the end of September, after US$10bn of inflows that month.
Session recap
Gold drifted lower through most of Tuesday's trading. Spot prices started near $4,141, rose to an intraday high of $4,155.64 and fell to a low of $4,111.63 before finishing close to the bottom of the range (Investing.com). Since its October 16 close of $4,165.50, spot gold has lost roughly $51 over two sessions. Gold fell even though the dollar and real yields eased. Our reading, not a reported fact, is that oil-driven rate expectations outweighed those usual supports.

What drove it
Oil and the inflation outlook
Energy was the main story again. Reuters reported that Brent rose as high as $111.99 a barrel after the Houthis said they had attacked Saudi energy, airport and military targets, including an Aramco site in Yanbu and the Shaybah oilfield. Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm the claims, and Reuters said it could not verify them. Shiptracking firm Kpler said at least 18 vessels had reportedly been attacked over two weeks. Oil then came off its highs as mediation reports emerged. ING analysts, quoted by Reuters, said the market appeared to be "pricing in a significant risk premium."
Oil matters for gold because of inflation and interest rates. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 14 that US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September. Gasoline jumped 9.1% in the month and accounted for more than half of the monthly rise.
Federal Reserve and rate expectations
The Federal Reserve raised its target range by a quarter point to 3.75%–4.00% on September 16. Yahoo Finance, citing CME FedWatch at 08:46 UTC, said markets priced an 83% chance of no change at the October 27–28 meeting and a 94% chance of a December increase. Investing.com reported at 01:21 UTC on October 21 that traders saw less than a 17% chance of an October hike and roughly an 85% chance of another hike this year. Gold pays no interest, so expectations of higher policy rates raise the cost of holding it compared with interest-bearing assets.
Yields, the dollar and US data
Investing.com reported that longer-dated Treasuries rallied as oil came off its highs, which pushed their yields lower. The Census Bureau published September housing starts on October 20, and Investing.com reported that starts fell and pending home sales hit a record low. Lower real yields and a slightly weaker dollar would normally support gold, but neither move was big enough to offset the rate worries.
Fund flows and central banks
Longer-term flows remain firm. The WGC said global gold ETFs drew US$10bn in September and a record US$31bn in the third quarter. It also reported that the People's Bank of China added 23 tonnes in September, its largest monthly purchase since October 2023, taking its holdings to 2,410 tonnes. These figures are monthly and do not explain a single day's move.
Market tone
Investing.com said bullion had fallen roughly a fifth since the US-Iran conflict began in late February. Silver's gain suggests that the dip in oil and yields helped the more industrial metal. That is a description of the day, not a forecast.
Political & policy watch
- US-Iran diplomacy: Iran's Nournews reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian met Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in Tehran. Reuters noted that an earlier Pakistan-brokered interim agreement in June broke down within weeks. Investing.com reported that a diplomat dismissed claims that a deal was close.
- Red Sea and Gulf security: The Houthi claims of strikes inside Saudi Arabia have not been independently verified (Reuters). Shipping attacks near the Strait of Hormuz were cited by Yahoo Finance as a source of upward pressure on energy prices.
- Fed communications: According to Investing.com, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks on Friday did little to change expectations for October, and policymakers are now in the quiet period before the meeting.

Risk checklist for readers
- Geopolitical headlines move fast. Unverified claims of attacks or talks can swing oil and gold within minutes. Check whether officials or several news agencies have confirmed a report.
- Know which price you are reading. Spot, futures, LBMA benchmarks and dealer quotes differ in timing and terms. December futures usually sit above spot because of carrying costs.
- Real yields matter. The real yield is a bond's return after expected inflation, published daily by the US Treasury. Higher real yields have often weighed on gold, though the link is not fixed.
- Scheduled events add volatility. Fed decisions and CPI or PCE releases can cause sharp price gaps.
- Leverage cuts both ways. Futures and margin products magnify gains and losses, and margin requirements can rise at short notice.
- Currency effects. Gold is priced in dollars, so returns for non-US readers also depend on exchange rates.
Frequently asked questions
What moves the price of gold day to day?
Short-term moves often follow changes in US interest-rate expectations, real (inflation-adjusted) Treasury yields, the US dollar and geopolitical news. Longer-term demand from ETFs, central banks and jewellery buyers also matters, but it is usually reported monthly or quarterly.
What is the difference between spot gold, COMEX futures and the LBMA Gold Price?
Spot gold (XAU/USD) is the price for near-immediate delivery in the over-the-counter market. COMEX futures are exchange-traded contracts for delivery in a future month, with an official daily settlement price. The LBMA Gold Price is a benchmark set in London auctions twice a day, at 10:30 and 15:00 London time.
Why do higher oil prices sometimes weigh on gold?
Higher oil prices can lift inflation, which may lead markets to expect higher central bank interest rates. Because gold pays no interest, higher expected rates raise the cost of holding it compared with interest-bearing assets, even though gold is also seen as a hedge against geopolitical risk.
