What a bear market means for the CSI 300

Markets usually call a fall of 20% or more from a recent high a "bear market," and a fall of 10% a "correction." The label is a convention. No exchange or regulator declares it, and it triggers nothing automatically. It simply records that the CSI 300 has lost a fifth of its value since late June.

The speed of the drop stands out. The index fell for ten weeks in a row, according to LSEG data cited by CNBC. The decline was also uneven. Investing.com reported that the tech-heavy SSE STAR 50 had lost nearly 40% and ChiNext about 36% over the same period, which is much more than the broader benchmark. China stocks rebounded on Oct. 23; see our China and Hong Kong brief.

What drove the CSI 300 lower

Doubts about AI spending

The most widely cited driver was concern about artificial-intelligence valuations. According to Investing.com, investors are questioning whether heavy spending on AI infrastructure will produce enough return. On Thursday it reported intraday falls of 6.1% for SMIC and Alibaba, 6.9% for MiniMax and 9.4% for Z.AI. Bloomberg, as cited by Yahoo Finance, linked the slide to fading stimulus hopes, weak earnings and worries about the global AI trade.

US company results added to these doubts. Tesla reported third-quarter results on October 21 and cut its 2026 capital-spending forecast from more than $25 billion to about $20 billion, according to The Asia Business Daily and Yahoo Finance. Its shares rose 3.41% in regular trading and then fell about 3% after hours. CoinDesk said mixed US earnings had added uncertainty about AI investment. Its report also mentioned that Meta had raised the lower end of its spending guidance. Bullquill could not confirm from Meta's own releases when that change was made. For background on Tesla, see our explainer on the Tesla–SpaceX merger.

Oil above $112

Oil prices rose further. CoinDesk reported that Brent crude rose above $112 a barrel, its highest level since May, and that US WTI crude topped $100. The Associated Press reported that oil rose after Iranian state television said tankers had been damaged in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent had already settled at $109.86 on October 17, its highest close since May 19, according to MercoPress. China is a large oil importer, so higher crude prices raise costs across its economy. Our oil daily brief covers the supply backdrop.

Hong Kong tech and selling pressure

Hong Kong fell more steeply than the mainland. Futu data show the Hang Seng down 717.19 points to 22,934.68. Bloomberg's David Ingles, cited by CoinDesk, said it was the worst session for Hong Kong tech since the April 2025 US tariff announcement. Finimize said the Hang Seng Tech Index had reached a two-year low. Some analysts pointed to selling linked to tax. Finimize cited analyst Hao Hong, who said a deadline tied to Beijing's push to tax income from offshore trusts may have led some large shareholders to sell their most liquid holdings for cash. The Standard also linked the slide to mainland tax rumors. These explanations have not been confirmed by any authority. See also our report on Thursday's early Hang Seng slide.

Limited policy support

Policymakers have offered little new support. China held its one-year and five-year loan prime rates at 3.0% and 3.5% on October 20, Reuters reported. Maybank analysts, cited by Reuters, said third-quarter GDP growth of 4.5% makes new stimulus less urgent. Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that state-backed buying since July totals about $43 billion and warned that this alone may not produce a lasting recovery.

How the selloff spread across Asia

The weakness was not limited to China. CoinDesk reported falls of about 3.5% for South Korea's Kospi, about 3% for Japan's Nikkei 225 and about 2% for Taiwan's benchmark. Nasdaq 100 futures fell almost 2%, and the VIX volatility index rose about 10% to around 18. Bitcoin dropped back toward $82,000 and gold fell below $4,100 an ounce, the same report said. An Investing.com analysis said October's losses in Asia have been concentrated in large AI and semiconductor stocks. Our Asia and Europe markets wrap covers the build-up earlier in the week.

What it means

A CSI 300 bear market tells readers that one of the world's largest stock benchmarks has lost a fifth of its value in about four months. The losses are heaviest in technology. Investing.com noted that a long slump could limit funding for China's technology goals and increase pressure on policymakers to provide stronger market support. Bullquill is not aware of any new support measure announced on October 22.

Several things are still unknown. Exchange-confirmed closing levels and the exact June peak level had not been published in the sources reviewed. The size of any tax-related selling has not been confirmed. It is also too early to say whether the oil-price shock will persist. Upcoming Chinese data, including industrial profits on October 27 and official PMIs on October 31 according to the National Bureau of Statistics calendar, will add more information.
