Nvidia stock correction: shares 11.3% below Oct. 6 record
The shares dropped 4.4% on October 22 and slipped below their 50-day average of 222.77, though they remain above the 200-day line at 203.56. AP and Reuters tied the selloff to doubts about returns on AI investment.
Key takeaways
- Nvidia stock closed at $212.21 on October 22, 2026, down 4.40% on the day and 11.3% below its record close of $239.24 on October 6. A drop of 10% or more from a peak is widely called a correction.
- The October 22 fall came during a broad selloff in AI shares after results from Meta, Tesla and Lam Research. According to the Associated Press and Reuters, investors were reassessing the cost of AI investment and the returns it can produce.
- An earlier leg lower came on October 14. The September consumer price index came in above forecasts and raised bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike. Yahoo Finance reported that Nvidia closed down more than 3% that day.
- Nvidia now trades below its 50-day moving average (222.77) but above its 200-day average (203.56).
- Financial media did not point to an Nvidia-specific trigger for the October 22 drop.
The Nvidia stock correction is here. Shares fell 4.40% on Thursday, October 22, to close at $212.21, 11.3% below their $239.24 record close of October 6, as a selloff in AI-linked stocks deepened.
The world's most valuable listed company has now given back most of its early-October rally. This is not a single bad day. It reflects two weeks in which rate worries and doubts about AI spending pulled the shares down in steps. Below we look at what the numbers show, what the sources say is driving the move, and what remains unclear.

Why is Nvidia stock falling?
1. AI spending doubts after Meta, Tesla and Lam Research results
The biggest single drop came on October 22. According to the Associated Press, Nvidia fell 4.4% as part of a global selloff in AI stocks. AP described it as "the single strongest force pulling" the S&P 500 lower, because Nvidia is the largest company in the index by market value. The S&P 500 fell 1.2% to 7,663.43, its worst day since July, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.6% to 26,008.86.
Reuters, in a report carried by The Korea Times, said investors were weighing the cost and uncertain returns of AI investment after earnings from Tesla and Meta did little to ease concerns. "Investors are now reassessing the pace of AI spending and the returns that spending can generate," Steve Sosnick, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers, told Reuters. Meta fell after unveiling a new non-voting share class to help fund its AI expansion. Tesla fell after cutting its 2026 capital spending forecast. For background, see our explainer on Meta's non-voting shares.
The chip supply chain added pressure. According to AP, Lam Research fell 11.8% despite beating expectations, after a weak profit forecast midpoint. The Motley Fool, in a midday report carried by Yahoo Finance, said Lam's warning about supply-chain constraints renewed "AI jitters". Reuters reported that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was down 5.6% at midday, its lowest since July 29 (see our chip stocks report).
Gotrade noted that financial media did not point to an Nvidia-specific trigger for the October 22 drop. Based on the sources reviewed, the move reflected sector-wide selling rather than news from the company itself.
2. A hot inflation report and Fed rate-hike bets
The first sharp leg lower came on October 14. That morning, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that consumer prices rose 3.7% in the 12 months to September 2026. Core prices, which exclude food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month. According to Gotrade, the headline figure beat a 3.6% forecast and was up from 3.4% in August. Core inflation also beat a 0.2% monthly forecast.
According to Yahoo Finance, the hotter-than-expected reading raised worries about further Fed rate hikes and a higher cost of capital. Nvidia closed down more than 3% that day, leading the chip sector lower. Gotrade reported that the Nasdaq fell 1.9% and that markets raised the odds of a hike at the Fed's October 27–28 meeting. Those odds later eased as Fed officials signalled they could wait for more data. Our Fed rate-hike explainer sets out that debate.
3. Debt and funding worries around AI infrastructure
Concern about how the AI build-out is financed runs through both selloffs. AP wrote on October 22 that investors worried the AI boom could be threatened by the high cost of borrowing for data centres and chips. AP also reported that CoreWeave, which rents out Nvidia chips through the cloud, fell 10.1% on debt concerns. Yahoo Finance had earlier linked a slide in CoreWeave to worries about its debt-heavy balance sheet and rising interest costs. Our report on Meta's credit default swaps looks at the same theme from the bond market.
Background: oil and geopolitics
According to AP, Brent crude rose 4% to $113.17 a barrel on October 22, its highest in about five months, amid uncertainty over the war with Iran. Reuters cited Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia as adding to unease. These factors weighed on markets in general. No source we reviewed tied them directly to Nvidia, so their exact effect on the stock has not been confirmed.

What we know and what we don't know yet
What we know: Nvidia closed 11.3% below its record. The two largest down days in the period, October 14 and October 22, coincided with a hotter-than-expected CPI report and a sector-wide AI selloff, according to Yahoo Finance, AP and Reuters. The company's last reported quarter was strong. According to The Motley Fool and Yahoo Finance, revenue for the fiscal second quarter ended July 26, 2026 was $96.2 billion, up 106% from a year earlier. Nvidia guided for about $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%, in the current quarter.
What we don't know: Whether the selling reflects a lasting shift in how investors value AI spending or a short-term reaction to one week of earnings has not been established. Nvidia has not yet announced a date for its fiscal third-quarter results. Based on past notices on its investor relations site, the report usually comes in mid-to-late November. The Fed's decision on October 27–28 is also still to come.
What it means
For now, the drop says more about the market's mood toward AI than about Nvidia's own business. Nvidia sells the chips at the centre of AI data-centre spending. When investors question whether customers such as Meta can keep raising that spending, or what it will cost to finance, Nvidia is one of the first stocks they sell. Its size makes the effect larger. AP noted that Nvidia's moves now weigh on the S&P 500 more than any other stock. Track Asian and global markets on our markets dashboard.
Technically, the stock sits between its 50-day and 200-day averages. That means the short-term trend has turned down while the longer-term trend is still positive. The coming Fed meeting, upcoming Big Tech earnings and Nvidia's own results will show which of those trends carries more weight.
