Key takeaways

  • Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 841.28 points, or 1.30%, to 64,075.42 on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, a one-month low. The broader TOPIX lost 1.43% to 4,009.21.
  • SoftBank Group, down about 6%, was the biggest drag. Reports linked the selling to higher bond yields, high oil prices and doubts about how AI spending is financed.
  • The yen stayed weak at about 158 per US dollar, which raises import costs and keeps pressure on the Bank of Japan.
  • The BoJ, at 1.25% after a September hike, ends its next meeting on October 30. Reuters sources expect a hold unless the yen slides again.
  • September trade data released on Wednesday morning showed exports up 16.7%, below forecasts.

BBN Times gave the Nikkei close as 64,075.37; we use the figure that matches the reported point change. TOPIX and breadth figures come from one wire report.

Selling deepened in the afternoon: the Nikkei's loss roughly doubled between the midday break and the close, with cyclical and financial shares under the most pressure, according to BigGo Finance.

What drove it

SoftBank and AI financing doubts

SoftBank Group fell about 6%, according to BBN Times, and alone took more than 200 points off the Nikkei by midday, according to BigGo Finance. Fujikura, Kyocera, TDK and Fanuc were also among the main drags in the morning. The theme was the same one that hit Seoul: doubts about whether heavy, often debt-funded AI investment will earn enough to justify it. The Nasdaq's gain on Monday did not carry over to Tokyo.

Yields, oil and the Fed

The US 10-year Treasury yield was 5.15% on October 19, and Brent crude had topped $110 a barrel that day. High energy prices matter for Japan, which imports almost all of its oil, and they feed into inflation expectations and bond yields. BigGo Finance said investors were also cautious ahead of next week's Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan meetings, where higher rates are possible.

Trade data after the close

Figures from the Ministry of Finance, released on Wednesday morning Tokyo time, showed September exports up 16.7% from a year earlier, below the 20.1% expected and the 13th straight monthly rise. Imports rose 18.9%. The trade deficit was ¥536.6 billion, wider than the ¥181 billion forecast. Exports to the US rose 22.9% and to China 8.6%, driven by demand for chips and AI-related products, according to InvestingLive.

Political & policy watch

Bank of Japan

The BoJ raised its policy rate to 1.25%, a 31-year high, in September. Reuters reported on October 20, citing sources, that the bank is likely to hold at the meeting ending October 30 unless the yen renews its slide, and that it may slightly raise its core inflation forecast for fiscal 2027 because of higher oil prices. A Reuters poll found most economists expect the next hike in December. One source told Reuters that inflation pressures "haven't jumped, so there's little reason to rush."

The Takaichi government and the bond market

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's spending plans have weighed on long-dated government bonds. The 30-year JGB yield hit a record 4.235% on October 5, when an extraordinary session of parliament opened, The Standard reported. The same report said her reflationary stance faces US pressure to curb the yen's weakness. Reuters noted that a planned two-year cut to the consumption tax on food from April has not yet passed parliament, and that government fuel subsidies are holding down consumer inflation. An NHK poll published on October 13 put cabinet approval at 51%, the lowest since the government took office in October 2025. Analysis: with exports to the US growing fastest, Japanese exporters are also exposed to any change in US trade policy.

What it means

Analysis. Tokyo's fall reflected global themes more than domestic news. A weak yen normally helps exporters, but at around 158 per dollar it also raises the cost of imported energy and strengthens the case for higher rates. That puts the BoJ, the government's fiscal plans and the bond market in the same frame. Over the next ten days, US tech earnings, Japanese inflation data and the BoJ's outlook report will show whether Tuesday's selling was a short pause or part of a longer reassessment of AI-linked stocks.

Wednesday's session was under way when this brief was written. Trading Economics reported the Nikkei up about 2% in early trade, with AI-related shares rebounding. That is an intraday indication, not a closing figure.

Next session: the rebound did not last. Our Japan stocks brief for October 22 covers how the Nikkei sank 2.7% in a chip selloff, and the follow-up on the Nikkei falling another 2% as the AI selloff deepened and banks slid tracks the next leg.

What to watch next

  • October 21, after the US close: results from Tesla, Meta, IBM, Lam Research and Texas Instruments, relevant for Japanese chip-equipment and AI names.
  • October 23, 08:30 JST: national consumer prices for September. August CPI was 1.9% year on year.
  • October 27–28: US Federal Reserve meeting.
  • October 29–30: Bank of Japan meeting, with the decision and quarterly outlook report on October 30.
  • November 3: US midterm elections.
  • Ongoing: parliamentary progress on the food consumption-tax cut, and official comments on the yen.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Concentration. A few heavily weighted stocks, such as SoftBank Group, can move the price-weighted Nikkei far more than the broader TOPIX. Comparing the two shows how broad a move is.
  • Currency effects. For investors outside Japan, returns depend on the yen as well as on share prices. A move in USD/JPY can offset or amplify a stock move.
  • Central bank days. BoJ and Fed decisions can move bonds, the yen and stocks within minutes. Volatility often rises around those dates.
  • Read data against forecasts. Markets react to the gap between a figure and expectations, not only to the figure itself.
