Key takeaways

  • Some iPhone Duo owners say the foldable's inner screen cracked along the hinge within hours of the 23 October 2026 launch, according to MacRumors and Mashable.
  • Most reported faults look the same: a split down the fold, or a bright line of pixels on one side of the inner display.
  • Nobody knows yet how many phones are affected. Apple had not commented publicly as of 06:45 UTC on 24 October.
  • One Australian owner says an Apple Store replaced their phone on the spot. Faults from normal use should fall under Apple's one-year warranty. Accidental inner-display damage costs $999 to fix without AppleCare+.

iPhone Duo screen crack reports: what happened

Some iPhone Duo owners report a screen crack along the hinge, saying the inner display split on launch day. Photos appeared on Reddit's r/iPhoneDuo and in a MacRumors forum thread. The number of affected units is unknown, and Apple has not commented.

MacRumors first reported the claims at about 18:05 UTC on 23 October, as US customers were still collecting their phones. The site said "almost all of the display faults are right along the hinge." Most show a line of bright pixels across one side of the screen. Mashable followed at about 20:56 UTC with its own report. It found similar cases from users in the US, Australia and China, where the phone went on sale several hours before the US.

MacRumors also shared the reports in a post on X. As of 06:45 UTC on 24 October, Bullquill had found no statement about the cracks from Apple, and no outlet had quoted one.

The Australian owner's account

The most detailed case comes from an owner in Australia who posted on Reddit. They said they had owned the phone for about six hours and opened it fewer than 20 times. While unfolding it, they felt something move under the screen near the internal hinge, then heard a crack. MacRumors quoted the owner as saying "the screen broke right along the hinge." The owner said there was no earlier damage to the screen or the outer hinge.

According to Mashable, Apple's phone support first offered an express replacement. However, it required a hold for the full price of the phone and could not promise a delivery date. The owner then went to an Apple Store, where staff "apologized and replaced it with a brand-new one on the spot," Mashable reported.

iDrop News reported that moderators of r/iPhoneDuo checked the owner's photo and marked it as genuine. Some readers still doubt the owner's account of how the damage happened. The moderators' check covers the photo, not the cause of the crack.

What we know and what we don't know yet

Reported so far

  • Several launch-day iPhone Duo units show inner-screen damage along the fold (MacRumors, Mashable, iDrop News).
  • Some photos show demo units in Apple Stores in China. MacRumors noted that the history of those units is unknown, so customer handling may have caused the damage.
  • At least one owner got an immediate in-store replacement (owner's account, via MacRumors and Mashable).

Not yet known

  • How widespread the problem is. Neither outlet gave a count of cases, and Apple has published no figures.
  • The cause. It is not clear whether the cracks come from a manufacturing defect, hinge stress, or accidental damage.
  • Apple's position. Apple has not said whether it is investigating. MacRumors expects Apple to collect failed units to study the problem, but that is the site's own reading, not a statement from Apple.

iPhone Duo repair costs if the inner screen breaks

Apple listed repair fees for the iPhone Duo on its US repair page on 14 October, as Notebookcheck reported. The fees below cover damage that the warranty does not include. MacRumors says hinge failures from normal use should fall under the standard one-year warranty.

Repair (US)Without AppleCare+With AppleCare+
Inner (folding) display$999$99
Other accidental damageUp to $1,499$99
Outer display$379Not listed in reports
Folding display cover layer$49$19

Background: Apple's hinge under the spotlight

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable phone. It went on sale on 23 October in more than 70 markets, starting at $1,999. Stock was tight, as our report on iPhone Duo stock and delivery dates explains. In September, Tom Marieb, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, told TechRadar that the hinge took "a long time to get right," iThinkDifferent reported.

Early reviewers did not find the problem. iDrop News noted that reviewer Joanna Stern folded a unit about 32,640 times with a robot, and reviewer Tim Pan folded one about 10,000 times by hand. Neither reported major damage beyond a more visible crease. Both tests used only a few phones. Our iPhone Duo review roundup covers how testers described the crease.

What it means for iPhone Duo owners

For now, these are owner reports, not a confirmed defect. A few cracked screens in the first day of sales does not show a fault across all units. It does show where foldables are weakest. If your inner screen shows a line of bright pixels or a split along the fold without a drop or impact, contact Apple or visit an Apple Store while the phone is under warranty. MacRumors also noted that launch-day buyers have two weeks to return the phone.

Before you unfold a new Duo for setup, check the hinge area and photograph the inner screen. That gives you a record if a fault appears later. Our guide on how to set up the iPhone Duo and transfer data covers the first-boot steps. It is also worth securing the account with passkeys. Bullquill will update this report if Apple comments or if repair data shows a pattern.
