iPhone Duo on sale: what happened

The iPhone Duo is on sale from 23 October in more than 70 countries and regions, starting at $1,999 in the US. Apple says walk-in stock is limited, and new online orders now show January delivery dates.

Sales started in the Asia-Pacific region first. Reuters reported a queue outside an Apple store in Sydney before it opened at 8 a.m. local time (21:00 UTC on 22 October). In Shanghai, one buyer told Reuters he had waited since 6 a.m. local time (22:00 UTC on 22 October). Reuters also said walk-in crowds were muted compared with past iPhone launches, because Apple had steered most customers to pre-orders.

Apple described customer response to the device as "nothing short of extraordinary," according to Reuters. On 21 October, Apple told MacRumors that its stores "will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers."

iPhone Duo price and specs

Apple lists the iPhone Duo from $1,999 in the US, with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options, in star white or night sky. Local prices reported by Reuters on launch day include A$3,899 (about $2,734) for a 512GB model in Sydney, and HK$17,499 (about $2,232) for a 256GB model in Hong Kong. One Hong Kong buyer told Reuters he planned to resell his unit for a profit of about HK$4,000.

According to Apple, the phone has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, an A20 Pro chip, a titanium frame and an IP68 rating. On the back are two 48MP cameras, a main and an ultra-wide. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, which several reviewers criticised. Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours of mixed use.

What we know and what we don't know yet

Confirmed

  • Sales began on 23 October in the first-wave markets (Apple Newsroom).
  • Walk-in stock is limited or unavailable depending on the country (Apple via MacRumors and Reuters).
  • Delivery estimates slipped to late January soon after pre-orders opened, and pre-orders were capped at two per customer (Reuters).

Not yet known

  • How many units Apple has sold or built. Apple has not published pre-order or production figures.
  • When stock will recover. Apple has not said when delivery times will shorten.
  • Whether third-party apps will adapt quickly. Reviewers said many apps still need updates for the new screen size, per Reuters.

Background: Apple enters a niche category

Samsung Electronics and Huawei have sold premium foldable phones for several years, but the category is still a small share of the global smartphone market. Reuters reported that John Ternus, Apple's former hardware chief, unveiled the Duo about a week after he took over as chief executive in September.

Early reviews praised the design and the near-invisible hinge crease. They were more critical of the camera trade-offs and of how the phone works when folded. For example, Daring Fireball's John Gruber called it "an extraordinarily polished prototype," Reuters reported. Our iPhone Duo review roundup covers the crease, battery and weight in detail.

China matters for the launch. Reuters noted that smartphone shipments there have fallen for six straight quarters, as weak consumer demand and higher memory costs push prices up. At the same time, Apple's share has recovered as some buyers trade up to premium phones. Memory supply is a wider industry pressure, as our report on Micron's Taiwan labour talks explains.

What it means

For buyers, a pre-order is now the realistic way to get an iPhone Duo, and in most markets that means waiting until the new year. Shoppers who want a foldable sooner still have the established Android models to choose from.

For the foldable market, IDC vice president Francisco Jeronimo told Reuters that Apple's entry "could bring the format to a much broader audience." IDC forecasts that Apple will take 44% of foldable value and 31% of units shipped in 2026, and lead the category in both measures by 2027. Jeronimo said Apple's next challenge is turning interest into actual availability and adoption. Bullquill will update this page as Apple or major retailers report sales and supply figures.
