Key takeaways

  • The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) jumped 5.65% to 5,278.89 on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after two of its worst days in decades, triggered by MSCI's proposal to downgrade Indonesia to "Standalone" status.
  • The rally was broad, but foreign investors still sold a net Rp2.19 trillion. Analysts quoted by Antara called it mainly a technical rebound.

What drove it

A rebound after the MSCI shock

On October 15 (New York time), MSCI opened a consultation on moving Indonesia from Emerging Market to Standalone status, citing concerns about ownership transparency, suspected coordinated trading and weak evidence of enforcement. The IHSG then lost about 15% in two sessions. Tuesday's rally was a partial recovery: every sector rose and transport stocks gained 8.55%, Kompas reported, but foreign investors kept selling. Analysis: local buyers drove the move, which looks more like a relief rally than a change in foreign positioning.

Buybacks and state investors

Five listed companies, including Barito Pacific and Chandra Asri Pacific, announced buybacks worth about Rp4.5 trillion combined on October 19, according to CNBC Indonesia. Dony Oskaria, chief operating officer of the sovereign fund Danantara, said it would look to raise holdings in fundamentally strong state-owned companies, without giving amounts or timing.

Rupiah and global rates

The rupiah has lost about 8% this year, according to AFP, and is close to its June record low of 18,209 per dollar. Bank Indonesia said on October 19 that it is intervening in offshore and domestic forward markets and the spot market, and buying government bonds. High US yields, Brent near $110 and September's Fed hike add pressure.

Political & policy watch

The government's response

President Prabowo met financial officials at the palace on October 19, including OJK chair Friderica Widyasari Dewi, and instructed the OJK to act firmly against violations, CNBC Indonesia and Suara reported. The OJK said reforms on transparency and liquidity would continue.

Exchange reforms

The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) said it would remove all high-shareholding-concentration (HSC) stocks, about 18% of index weight, from the IHSG calculation. It is not a delisting, and the effective date is still to be announced. The IDX will also add shareholder-affiliation details to disclosures of holdings above 1%. Its president director, Jeffrey Hendrik, has stressed that MSCI's move starts a consultation and is not a final decision.

MSCI timetable

MSCI is taking feedback until April 30, 2027 and plans a decision by June 30, 2027. It said it expects to proceed unless there is clear evidence of material improvement, and it has frozen increases to Indonesian index weights and new additions until further notice.

Bank Indonesia's decision

A Bisnis.com survey of 14 economists found 57% expecting a rate rise. Permata Bank's Josua Pardede put the chance of a 25-basis-point increase at about 60%. Analysis: a hike could support the rupiah, but, as one economist told Kumparan, it cannot fix the ownership-transparency problems behind MSCI's proposal.

What it means

Analysis. Indonesia faces two tests at once. The monetary one is whether Bank Indonesia puts the rupiah first with another hike or holds to protect growth. The structural one is whether regulators can show enforcement that changes MSCI's view before April 30, 2027. Local investors and companies can support prices in the short term, but lasting foreign demand depends on the second test.

Next session: our Indonesia stocks brief for October 22 covers the IHSG's 1.12% gain as the rupiah slipped. For the bigger picture on the MSCI test, see why the IHSG still sits 41% below its January record as foreign selling persists.

What to watch next

  • October 21, 13:30 WIB: Bank Indonesia's rate decision and press conference.
  • October 27–28: US Federal Reserve meeting.
  • To be announced: the effective date for removing HSC stocks from the IHSG.
  • November 2026: MSCI's quarterly index review, under the Indonesia freeze.
  • Early November: October inflation and third-quarter GDP from BPS; October reserves from Bank Indonesia.
  • April 30, 2027: MSCI consultation closes; decision due by June 30, 2027.

Later in the week, the IHSG rose to 5,439.26; see our IHSG brief for Oct. 23.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Extreme volatility. Daily moves of 5% to 12% can reverse quickly, and trading halts or auto-rejection limits can stop trades at expected prices.
  • Check who is buying. Daily foreign-flow data show whether a rally has broad support.
  • Index changes affect comparisons. Removing HSC stocks will change the IHSG's make-up, so index levels before and after may not be directly comparable.
  • Currency risk. A weaker rupiah reduces returns for foreign investors and raises costs for importers and dollar borrowers.
  • Consultations are not decisions. MSCI's proposal can still change before its June 30, 2027 decision.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the IHSG rise 5.65% on October 20, 2026?

It rebounded after falling about 11.6% on October 16 and 3.64% on October 19 following MSCI's proposal to reclassify Indonesia as a Standalone market. Analysts quoted by Antara called it mainly a technical rebound, and foreign investors were still net sellers of Rp2.19 trillion on the day.

What did Indonesian authorities do after MSCI's announcement?

On October 19, President Prabowo instructed the OJK to enforce market rules firmly. The Indonesia Stock Exchange said it would remove high-shareholding-concentration stocks, about 18% of index weight, from the IHSG calculation, and several listed companies announced buybacks worth about Rp4.5 trillion.

When will Bank Indonesia announce its October 2026 rate decision?

At 13:30 WIB (06:30 UTC) on October 21, 2026, earlier than the usual time, according to CNBC Indonesia. The BI-Rate was 5.75% before the meeting, and economists were split between a hold and a rise to 6.00%.

When will MSCI decide on Indonesia?

MSCI is accepting feedback until April 30, 2027 and plans to announce its decision by June 30, 2027. It said it expects to proceed with the reclassification unless there is clear evidence of material improvement.
