Data as of: spot gold at 20:13 UTC on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (FXStreet) and 01:21 UTC on Wednesday, October 21 (Reuters); Trading Economics quotes at about 02:30 UTC on October 21; US futures at the October 20 close. Treasury yields are official end-of-day figures for October 20.

Key takeaways

  • Spot gold (XAU/USD) slipped to about $4,109–$4,116 an ounce early on October 21, heading for a fourth straight daily decline, according to Reuters and Trading Economics.
  • December gold futures settled around $4,141–$4,143 on October 20, down about 0.4%.
  • The main pressure is interest rates: high oil prices are feeding inflation worries and bets on further central-bank hikes, which raise the appeal of assets that pay interest.
  • Gold is down about 5.7% over the past month and roughly a quarter below its late-January record near $5,600, even as the US–Iran conflict continues.
  • Investors kept buying gold funds: global gold ETFs took in about $10 billion in September and holdings hit a record 4,256 tonnes, the World Gold Council said.

What drove it

Rate-hike expectations

The Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75%–4.00% on September 16. Markets price a hold at the October 27–28 meeting as most likely, but Reuters reported that traders see roughly an 85% probability of another hike later this year, and FXStreet, citing Prime Terminal, put December odds near 90%. Gold pays no interest, so higher expected rates raise the cost of holding it. September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, with energy up 20.4%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

Other central banks are leaning the same way. Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said core inflation is “quite close” to the 2% goal, and BoE policymaker Megan Greene said policy “is not restrictive enough,” FXStreet reported.

Oil and geopolitics

Brent touched a five-month high of $111.99 on October 20 after attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported, and was near $110 early on October 21. Trading Economics linked gold's latest slip to higher oil feeding inflation worries after a diplomat said a US–Iran deal was not imminent. Analysis: in this conflict, oil shocks have worked against gold mainly through rate expectations. Reuters noted that gold is down about a fifth since the war began in late February.

Flows and sentiment

Fund demand has held up. The World Gold Council reported record third-quarter ETF inflows of $31 billion, led by UK-listed funds, and cited diversification against persistent inflation, high energy prices and worries about AI-related equity valuations. Analysis: real yields actually eased this month while the price fell, so the usual link between the two has been weak. Hike expectations and a firm dollar seem to matter more for now.

Political & policy watch

  • US–Iran diplomacy. Pakistan's army chief met Iran's president in Tehran on October 20 to discuss mediation, Reuters reported. President Trump said on October 8 that the US would not strike Iran before the November 3 midterms, Al Jazeera reported.
  • US midterms. The vote could change fiscal policy and the outlook for deficits, which some investors watch when weighing gold.
  • Fed leadership. Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks did little to change expectations of an October hold, Reuters reported. His press conference on October 28 is the next scheduled guidance.
  • Trade policy. Section 301 tariffs replaced an expired Section 122 tariff in July, the Penn Wharton Budget Model said. Tariffs feed into inflation and therefore rate expectations.

What it means

Analysis. Gold is caught between two forces: geopolitical demand for a perceived safe asset and the rate expectations that the same geopolitics is driving through oil. So far this month the rate channel has been stronger.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Safe haven is not the same as stable. Gold has fallen roughly a quarter from its January record.
  • Spot, futures and ETF prices differ. Check which one a headline quotes.
  • Currency matters. Gold is priced in dollars, so local-currency returns also depend on exchange rates.
  • Flows and prices can diverge. Record ETF inflows have not prevented the recent price decline.
  • Costs add up. Physical gold carries dealer spreads and storage costs; funds charge fees.

Frequently asked questions

What was the gold price on October 21, 2026?

Reuters reported spot gold at $4,108.58 an ounce at 01:21 UTC on October 21, down 0.4%, and Trading Economics showed about $4,116 at around 02:30 UTC. December US gold futures had settled around $4,141 to $4,143 on October 20.

Why is gold falling while the US–Iran conflict continues?

High oil prices are lifting inflation and expectations of further central-bank rate hikes. Higher expected rates raise the opportunity cost of holding gold, which pays no interest. Reuters noted gold is down about a fifth since the war began in late February.

Are investors still buying gold ETFs?

Yes, as of the latest monthly data. The World Gold Council said global gold ETFs took in about $10 billion in September 2026 and record third-quarter inflows of $31 billion, lifting holdings to a record 4,256 tonnes.

Does Bullquill recommend buying or selling gold?
