Final Fantasy Resonance launch: date and platforms

Final Fantasy Resonance, Square Enix's first HD-2D Final Fantasy, launched on October 22, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. US prices run from $49.99 for the Standard Edition to $209.99 for the Square Enix Store Collector's Edition.

The game arrives on five platform families at once. A separate version exists for Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo's US store warns buyers to choose carefully, because the two Switch versions are sold as different products.

The October 23 confusion

Several outlets in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia's Pokde and the Philippines' One More Game, reported that the game or its Steam version launches on October 23. The Steam store page lists October 22, and Square Enix's own press release gives October 22 for all platforms. The most likely explanation is a time-zone difference for regions ahead of the Americas, but Square Enix has not published a global unlock schedule in the sources we checked, so the exact unlock hour in each region is unconfirmed. Players in Asia-Pacific should check their local storefront.

Editions and prices

Square Enix offers three editions, plus bonuses for pre-ordering and for buying early. The US prices below were reported at announcement and match the Nintendo US store's $49.99 listing for the Switch version.

The Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack, as listed on Steam, contains a Magitek Armor Key (a magitek look for your chocobo), the Archwitch's Grimoire, a Mastery Ring, and a bundle of consumables: five Tents, five Mist Potions, five Mist Ethers, five Phoenix Downs and three Remedies. Nintendo's UK listing says these items are collected from a postbox in the Town of Mitra after a certain point in the story.

Regional pricing varies. Steam's Indonesian storefront lists the Standard Edition at Rp 729,000 and the Digital Deluxe Edition at Rp 949,000. French outlet Kami reported PlayStation Store prices in France of €59.99 and €69.99; we could not independently confirm European prices on an official store page.

Pre-order and early purchase bonuses

  • Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack (pre-order): Magitek Airship Passkey, Knight's Greatsword, Chestplate of Preparation, a Magicite Shard, three Tents and three Mist Potions.
  • Squire Kickstart Pack (early purchase): Blessed Cuirass and a Mist Ether. Deadlines differ by store: Nintendo's US store lists November 5, 2026, 11:59 p.m. PT, while Steam lists November 6, 2026, 8:59 a.m. PT.

Roots in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius

Resonance is not a brand-new story. It adapts the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a free-to-play mobile RPG, into a standalone turn-based game. Square Enix's press release says it was rebuilt as a console-quality RPG "rather than a direct port," and coverage of the reveal notes that the mobile game's gacha mechanics are gone.

The story follows Rain, a knight who commands an airship squadron in the Kingdom of Grandshelt, set in the world of Lapis. After the Earth Crystal is shattered, Rain sets out to protect the remaining crystals alongside his childhood friend Lasswell and Fina, a girl from the Earth Crystal who remembers only her name. The armored Veritas of the Dark is the antagonist. According to RPG Site, the English cast includes Clifford Chapin as Rain, Alejandro Saab as Lasswell and Lizzie Freeman as Fina.

Familiar faces appear through "Visions," crystallized essences of series characters such as Cloud, Tidus, Terra, Shantotto, Y'shtola and the Warrior of Light. Square Enix also confirmed that Sephiroth can be found and challenged as an optional fight with a special reward.

Who made it: Lancarse and Square Enix

Square Enix publishes the game. The Steam page credits development to Square Enix and Lancarse Ltd., a Japanese studio that, according to Notebookcheck, previously worked on The DioField Chronicle. The soundtrack, credited to Noriyasu Agematsu and his studio Elements Garden, includes 120 tracks, 33 of them new, alongside music carried over from Brave Exvius.

How combat works

Battles are turn-based, with a timeline that shows upcoming ally and enemy actions instead of the Active Time Battle gauge used in older entries. Hitting enemy weaknesses drains a stagger gauge. A staggered enemy opens a bonus phase with extra actions, and staggering every enemy at once triggers a sweeping stagger, which unlocks one Resonance, a Vision-specific special attack.

Each character equips one Vision for stats and abilities, and abilities from several Visions can be combined within a cost limit, which works much like a job system. Espers fight alongside the party for three turns at a high MP cost. Airships open up dungeons that can only be reached by air, and the side content includes Gilgamesh, a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and an Ultima Weapon showdown.

Demo save carry-over: what transfers and what does not

A free demo launched on September 3, 2026 on every platform. It covers the opening through the end of Chapter 1, which Square Enix estimates takes three to five hours, and its save data carries over to the full game.

There are two caveats for Nintendo players:

  • No Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer. Nintendo's US store says saves cannot move between the Switch and Switch 2 versions in either direction, and Nintendo says there are no plans to sell an upgrade pack. Pick the version that matches the console you plan to keep using.
  • Cloud saves are unclear. Nintendo's UK page says the game does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup, while the US product page lists Save Data Cloud under Nintendo Switch Online. Players who rely on cloud backups should check their regional listing.

PC requirements

The Steam listing asks for 64-bit Windows 11, DirectX 12, 8 GB of RAM and 15 GB of storage at both tiers. The minimum spec (Ryzen 3 2300X or Core i3-8100 with an RX 6400, Arc A580 or GTX 1650) targets 1080p at 30 fps on the Low preset. The recommended spec (Ryzen 5 2500X or Core i3-8100 with an RX 5500 XT, Arc A580 or GTX 1650) targets 1080p at 60 fps on the Highest preset. The game uses Denuvo anti-tamper, and Notebookcheck reports that it is Steam Deck Verified.

What it means

For Square Enix, Resonance tests whether the HD-2D style that sold Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest remakes can carry a mainline-branded Final Fantasy spin-off, and whether a mobile story can find a second life on consoles without gacha systems. Launching the same day on all five platforms, with a $49.99 entry price and a long demo, gives the game a lower barrier to entry than most full-price RPGs.

For players, the main decisions are practical. The demo carry-over means there is little risk in trying Chapter 1 first. Switch owners who plan to upgrade to a Switch 2 should buy the Switch 2 version directly, since neither saves nor licences convert between them. Anyone outside the Americas should confirm the local unlock time on their storefront rather than rely on reported dates.
