Key takeaways

  • The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) provisionally suspended Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir, the reigning world marathon champion and Tokyo Olympic champion, on 23 October 2026.
  • According to the AIU, an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya before her 30 August Sydney Marathon win returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO (erythropoietin).
  • A provisional suspension is not a final ruling. No ban has been imposed and the case still has to go through the anti-doping disciplinary process.
  • Her agent, Gianni Demadonna, said he felt "terrible" about what happened, Reuters reported. Sydney Marathon organisers said she is entitled to due process.

Peres Jepchirchir doping case: what happened

The Peres Jepchirchir doping case became public on 23 October 2026, when the Athletics Integrity Unit provisionally suspended the reigning world marathon champion over an adverse analytical finding for EPO in a sample collected before her 30 August Sydney Marathon win.

The AIU said the sample was taken out of competition in Kenya before her "recent Sydney Marathon win". Jepchirchir, 33, won that race on 30 August 2026 in 2:18:31, more than three minutes ahead of fellow Kenyan Irine Cheptai, according to Reuters and The Star. The AIU did not publish the date the sample was collected.

EPO is a hormone that the kidneys produce naturally to stimulate red blood cell production. Synthetic versions are banned at all times because a higher red cell count can increase the blood's capacity to carry oxygen, which helps endurance athletes.

Reactions so far

In an emailed statement quoted by Reuters, Demadonna said: "I can only say that I feel terrible about what happened." No statement from Jepchirchir herself had been reported at the time of writing.

The Sydney Marathon, now one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, said it was "extremely disappointed" to learn of the suspension. Organisers said Jepchirchir "is entitled to due process" and that they would not comment further until the process ends. They added that they and the other Majors have funded more out-of-competition testing carried out with the AIU, Capital FM and Reuters reported.

What happens next

While provisionally suspended, an athlete cannot compete or take part in official athletics activities. The case now moves into formal proceedings under World Athletics anti-doping rules. According to Pulse Sports, an EPO violation carries a standard four-year period of ineligibility, which can be reduced if the athlete shows mitigating circumstances or that the use was not intentional. If a violation is confirmed, her results from the affected period, including Sydney, could be disqualified.

There is a further consequence specific to the big-city marathons. The Sydney organisers pointed to a World Marathon Majors rule under which any athlete banned for a doping offence of three months or more is barred for life from all of the series' races, Capital FM reported. That rule would apply only if a ban of that length is imposed.

Background: one of the sport's most decorated marathoners

Jepchirchir is among the most successful distance runners of her era. The table below lists the main results cited by the AIU and Kenyan media.

She is also a former half-marathon world record holder and won world half-marathon titles in 2016, 2020 and 2023, according to The Star.

The case adds to a long list of doping cases involving Kenyan distance runners. Ruth Chepngetich, who holds the women's marathon world record of 2:09:56, was banned for three years in 2025 after admitting violations involving the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, Reuters reported. Her record stands because it was set before her positive test.

What it means

For now, the finding is an allegation, not a verdict, and Jepchirchir keeps her titles and results unless the process ends with a confirmed violation. But the suspension takes the reigning world champion out of competition immediately, and the stakes are high: a standard EPO sanction would cover several seasons, and a ban of three months or more would end her career in the World Marathon Majors.

The case also shows that out-of-competition testing in Kenya, which the Majors have helped fund, is catching athletes at the top of the sport. Frequently asked questions

Why was Peres Jepchirchir suspended?

The Athletics Integrity Unit said on 23 October 2026 that an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya before her Sydney Marathon win returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO, and it provisionally suspended her.

Is Peres Jepchirchir banned for doping?

No. She is provisionally suspended, which stops her competing while the case is heard. No sanction has been decided and no violation has been confirmed.
