Etsy AI rules ban AI-generated recipes, patterns and bot listings
Etsy's new AI rules bar AI-generated recipes, craft patterns and bot-made listings and require at least one unedited photo of the real item. AI art stays, with disclosure, but key details on enforcement are still unclear.
Key takeaways
- Etsy announced on 22 October 2026 that sellers may no longer offer AI-generated recipes, craft patterns, plans or other instructions. These "functional guides" must be the seller's own work.
- Listings created by bots without human involvement are banned, and Etsy says the shops behind them can be removed.
- Most physical listings now need at least one unedited photo of the real item against a real background. Pattern and recipe sellers must show a real finished result.
- AI-generated art stays on the marketplace, but sellers must disclose AI use and may not present the work as handmade or entirely their own.
- Etsy has not published an effective date or a grace period, has not defined how much human input is enough, and says enforcement will expand "over the coming months", according to Value Added Resource.
Under new Etsy AI rules announced 22 October 2026, sellers may no longer offer AI-generated recipes, craft patterns or other instructions, and bot-made listings are banned. Most physical listings need at least one unedited photo of the real item. AI-generated art stays, with disclosure.
The announcement was reported by CNBC and The Verge. Marketplace news site Value Added Resource went through the policy text line by line. Below is what changes for sellers and buyers, what is still allowed, and what Etsy has not yet explained.
What do Etsy's new AI rules ban?
AI-generated recipes, patterns and instructions
Etsy's updated AI creations policy now bans AI-generated "functional instructions". These include knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, recipes, woodworking and construction plans, and instruction manuals. They also cover any other guide meant to help a buyer complete a specific task, according to Value Added Resource's reading of the policy. Instructions must be the seller's own original work.
Etsy's reasoning is that these products, unlike artwork, have to work. Etsy said buyers "put in effort to achieve a finished product", CNBC reported. When a pattern or recipe is flawed, the buyer often finds out only after spending time and materials. CNBC noted that Etsy has struggled in recent years to curb AI-made crochet patterns and similar low-quality AI content.
Bot-generated listings
Listings generated by bots without human involvement are no longer allowed. Value Added Resource says the policy also prohibits mass-automated product or listing creation, and that each item needs individual human prompting, curation and creative input. Etsy's separate ban on selling AI prompt bundles, introduced in 2024, remains in place.
Misleading photos
The photo rules are the change most sellers will notice day to day. According to The Verge and Value Added Resource, most listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. "Unedited" is strict. Value Added Resource reports that cropping, resizing, straightening, changing lighting or exposure, and replacing the background are all ruled out for that photo. Other listing images may still be edited, including with AI tools, as long as they accurately show the item.
Sellers of patterns, recipes, seeds and similar products must show at least one real, unedited photo of a finished result. Etsy's example is a crochet pattern listing that shows a completed project. Etsy said this is "so buyers know what to expect", CNBC reported.

What is still allowed with disclosure?
Etsy is not removing AI-made goods across the board. Sellers can keep offering AI-generated art if they "play a clear role in what they create and are transparent about the process", Etsy said, according to CNBC. AI use in making the product must be disclosed, and that work cannot be described as handmade or wholly the seller's own creation.
The rule is looser for photo editing. Value Added Resource reports that Etsy recommends, but does not require, disclosing AI-assisted photo editing in the description. When the product itself is created with AI, disclosure is mandatory.
Why Etsy is acting now
Etsy has framed the change around trust. In its seller notice, the company said "many active buyers say they can't tell which items involve AI-generated content", The Verge reported. CNBC reported that Etsy called this a "top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy". Etsy also said sellers were concerned about their work appearing alongside items that use AI in misleading ways.
The context matters. Founded in 2005, Etsy built its brand on craft makers and artisan goods. CNBC noted that it has been pushing back against mass-produced items from resellers and competes with Amazon, Walmart, TikTok, Temu and Shein. Etsy is also using AI heavily itself. According to CNBC, it uses AI to build shopper profiles and rank search results, and it has worked with OpenAI on shopping features that include a ChatGPT app. Other marketplaces are tightening labelling too. CNBC reported that Amazon recently began requiring sellers to label photos or videos featuring AI-generated people.
How enforcement will work
Etsy describes enforcement as gradual rather than a single sweep:
- Upload checks: When Etsy detects a possibly AI-generated image during upload, a pop-up asks the seller whether AI was used, The Verge reported. Value Added Resource says Etsy plans to extend the checks to existing listings.
- Removals: Misleading listings can be removed, and repeated violations may lead to shop removal. Etsy plans to expand removals over the coming months as it invests in detection tools, according to Value Added Resource.
- Refunds: If a buyer reports that an item is "materially different" from its listing, the seller may be responsible for the refund, The Verge reported.
- Buyer reports: A new reporting option lets users flag misleading AI imagery. At first these reports will feed Etsy's understanding of misuse rather than trigger immediate enforcement.
- Appeals: Sellers can appeal through the Policy Violations page in Shop Manager.
Value Added Resource reports that James Ossman, Etsy's vice president of customer operations, said in a video accompanying the announcement that the company is developing tools to verify authorship. He gave no details.
Open questions for sellers
Several important points remain unclear:
- How much human involvement counts. Etsy requires individual human prompting, curation and creative input but has not set a threshold.
- Effective date. Neither The Verge nor Value Added Resource found an effective date or a deadline for updating existing listings.
- Listing tools. It is unclear whether the bot-listing ban affects third-party listing and cross-listing tools that connect through Etsy's API, Value Added Resource notes.
- Camera processing. Etsy has not explained how it will tell deliberate edits apart from the automatic processing done by phone cameras and software.
- Detection accuracy. Etsy has not said how its AI-image detection works or how accurate it is. Value Added Resource notes past seller complaints about incorrect takedowns.
- "Materially different" and "bot". The Verge points out that neither term is clearly defined.
What it means
For buyers, the main gain is a real photo to check before buying. If you buy a pattern or recipe, you can expect to see a real finished result. If you buy a physical item, at least one photo should show the actual object as it looks. If what arrives is materially different, the new rules make it clearer that the seller can be held responsible for a refund.
For sellers, the change splits the marketplace in two. Makers of art and decorative digital goods can keep using AI if they disclose it. Sellers of instructions, plans and recipes can no longer rely on generative AI to write them. Shops that use heavy automation should review how listings are created and keep evidence of their own design work, since Etsy says authorship verification is coming. The ban on editing the main photo may also mean reshooting product images that have been cropped or colour-corrected.
The wider signal is that platforms are moving from simply labelling AI content towards rules based on whether the product works. Disclosure is no longer enough for products like patterns and recipes. Similar debates are under way in regulation, such as the EU AI Act's transparency obligations, and inside creative tools such as Canva's new in-house image model. Ecommerce rivals are reshaping their operations around AI as well, as seen in eBay's workforce cuts and Amazon's holiday hiring plans. For sellers using AI in their work, our prompt engineering guide explains how these tools are steered. Under Etsy's rules, though, the craft instructions themselves now have to come from a person.
Frequently asked questions
Can you still sell AI art on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy still allows AI-generated art, but sellers must disclose that AI was used, must play a clear creative role, and cannot present the work as handmade or entirely their own creation.
What AI products did Etsy ban in October 2026?
