Session recap

This crypto daily brief covers a broad risk-off day. Bitcoin opened the UTC day near its highest level since early October, then slid through the European and US sessions as oil prices climbed and US chip stocks fell sharply. Almost every large token ended lower; Cryptoticker counted 23 of the 25 largest non-stablecoin assets in the red on Thursday afternoon.

Bitcoin's intraday hourly high was about $84,143 at 01:00 UTC. The global market-cap change is CoinGecko's aggregate and is not directly comparable with other trackers: Cryptoticker put the total at $2.83 trillion, down 4.2%, and bitcoin dominance at 57.4% on Thursday afternoon. Tether (USDT, $182.5 billion) and USD Coin (USDC, $72.1 billion) traded close to $1. Oct 22 ETF flows were not yet published at 00:15 UTC.

ETF flows had looked supportive going into the day. TFTC's tracker shows US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $526.6 million on October 19, $23.2 million on October 20 and $528.4 million on October 21, lifting October's net total to about $461 million. BlackRock's IBIT took $235 million of the October 21 inflow. Spot ether ETFs posted a $15 million inflow on October 21, their first positive day since October 13, FXStreet reported, citing SoSoValue. What drove it

Oil and inflation worries

Brent crude traded above $111 a barrel on Thursday, a five-month high, Yahoo Finance reported. FXStreet put it at about $112, up 3.7%, linking the move to fears of a wider Middle East conflict and US-Iran tensions. Yahoo Finance said high oil prices were stoking inflation concerns and making risk assets less attractive. Higher fuel costs can keep inflation elevated, which in turn can keep central banks wary of cutting rates.

Chip stocks and AI spending

US technology shares fell sharply. FXStreet reported that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 6.7%, Nvidia fell 4.4% and Meta lost 7% after its quarterly results, as investors worried about AI infrastructure spending. Both FXStreet and Cryptoticker (citing Yahoo Finance) put the S&P 500 down 1.2%; they reported the Nasdaq's fall at 2.6% and 2.1% respectively. AI-linked tokens fell harder than the market: FXStreet reported NEAR down 9%, Bittensor (TAO) down 8% and Render down 7%. Bond yields moved the other way

US Treasury data show the 10-year par yield fell to 4.96% on October 22 from 5.13% a day earlier, and the 2-year yield to 4.65% from 4.81%. FXStreet said investors moved into safer assets; crypto traded with tech stocks instead.

Flows and leverage

FXStreet's John Isige wrote on Thursday morning that ETF inflows were failing to absorb selling pressure after bitcoin could not break above $84,000. As prices fell, leveraged long positions were forced shut: FXStreet cited about $474 million of liquidations over 24 hours, and Cryptoticker cited roughly $370 million to $400 million, both from CoinGlass data with different snapshot times. A liquidation is when an exchange force-closes a leveraged position whose margin no longer covers losses; it can speed up a fall but does not explain why it started.

Cryptoticker said it found no major hack and no new crypto-specific central bank decision on the day. On available reports, the move was driven by broader markets rather than by news about crypto itself.

Political & policy watch

  • Stablecoin rules. On October 21 the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency issued the first final rule implementing the GENIUS Act, CoinDesk reported. It keeps the ban on issuer-paid yield, will judge third-party rewards case by case, and takes effect on January 18, 2027. The FDIC, Treasury and Federal Reserve are still writing their own rules. More in our explainer on the OCC's final rule.
  • Middle East. FXStreet linked the jump in oil to US-Iran tensions and fears of a wider regional crisis. Details of any diplomatic talks remain unconfirmed in the reports reviewed.
  • Federal Reserve. The Federal Open Market Committee meets on October 27–28, according to the Fed's calendar. Higher oil prices add to the inflation picture it will weigh.
  • US elections. The November 3 midterms will shape the next Congress and the future of stalled market-structure legislation.

What to watch next

  • October 23: US spot bitcoin and ether ETF flow data for October 22.
  • October 27–28: FOMC meeting; the statement is due on October 28 (Federal Reserve calendar).
  • October 30: Monthly crypto options expiry on Deribit.
  • November 3: US midterm elections.
  • December 8–9: Next FOMC meeting, with new economic projections.
  • January 18, 2027: The OCC's GENIUS Act rule takes effect.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Crypto moves with stocks. On days like this, bitcoin can follow the Nasdaq and chip stocks more than crypto news. Check what equities did before looking for a crypto-specific reason.
  • Oil feeds into rates. Energy prices affect inflation expectations and central bank decisions, which affect demand for risky assets.
  • ETF flows are reported with a lag. Flow data usually covers the previous US trading day, and an inflow day does not prevent a fall the next day.
  • Leverage amplifies moves. Liquidation totals vary by data provider and snapshot time; compare like with like.
  • Aggregates differ. Market cap and dominance figures change with each tracker's coin list and method.
  • Rules are still being written. Check official sites such as the OCC, SEC, CFTC and Federal Reserve for the final text of any rule.

Frequently asked questions

Why did bitcoin fall on October 22, 2026?

Reports from FXStreet, Yahoo Finance and Cryptoticker linked the drop to Brent crude above $111 a barrel, which raised inflation worries, and to a sharp fall in US chip and AI-related stocks. No major crypto-specific event was reported that day.

What are crypto liquidations?

A liquidation happens when an exchange force-closes a leveraged futures position because the trader's margin no longer covers losses. Large waves of liquidations can speed up price moves. Totals differ between data providers and snapshot times.

How are spot bitcoin ETF flows reported?

Trackers such as Farside, SoSoValue and TFTC publish net creations and redemptions for each US trading day, usually after the close or the next morning. That means the latest figure normally covers the previous US session.
