What drove it

Broadcom's $63 billion Anthropic financing lifts chips

Broadcom said it helped Anthropic arrange a $63 billion deal with banks so the AI company can buy more of its chips, Investopedia reported in a story carried by Yahoo Finance. Broadcom is "neither the lender nor the borrower," but it agreed to provide residual value support for the arrangement, according to the report. Broadcom shares were up roughly 4% in afternoon trading, though the stock remained below its June record. Our report on the Broadcom and Blackstone financing for Anthropic's chips explains the structure in detail.

The deal came a day after Anthropic published its IPO prospectus. Yahoo Finance said semiconductor stocks led the market higher, and IBTimes named Broadcom, Micron and Advanced Micro Devices among the Nasdaq's leaders. Nvidia also said it will invest $3 billion in Meta's equity offering, according to Yahoo Finance, after Meta announced plans to raise up to $95 billion for AI infrastructure. Analysis: investors are again rewarding the AI supply chain, but the run of financing and cross-investment deals has also revived questions about circular spending, which Investopedia flagged.

Earnings: SoFi and UPS up, Boeing and Coca-Cola down

Boeing reported a third-quarter loss of $0.26 per share, wider than the $0.21 analysts expected, even though revenue rose 4% to $24.19 billion, according to Yahoo Finance. Its commercial airplanes unit lost $697 million, about twice the expected amount. Defense revenue grew 15% to $7.94 billion. The shares still fell 10.69% to $168.18.

UPS rose after raising its full-year guidance. "US consumers remain resilient and the outlook for holiday demand is strong," Chief Executive Carol Tomé said on the earnings call, per Yahoo Finance. SoFi gained 13.42% after better-than-expected results and higher guidance. Coca-Cola beat estimates and raised its outlook, but its shares slipped as North American demand slowed, Yahoo Finance reported.

Oil eases and helps the macro backdrop

Brent crude slipped below $110 a barrel and WTI traded around $100 on hopes of de-escalation in the Middle East, Yahoo Finance reported, citing Reuters. Refiners were among the day's biggest losers, with Delek falling 10.41%; the sources reviewed did not give a specific reason. "Falling oil is helping the macro backdrop, but the real engine remains AI," King Lip, chief strategist at BakerAvenue Wealth Management, told Investing.com.

Yields and volatility

Treasury yields were little changed. The 2-year par yield rose two basis points to 4.70% and the 10-year slipped one basis point to 4.99%, Treasury data show. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. Analysis: the 4.73% decline in the VIX to 17.52, its second straight drop, suggests options traders were paying less for downside protection ahead of the Fed decision.

Political & policy watch

  • Federal Reserve. The FOMC opened its two-day meeting on Tuesday. Most market participants expect rates to stay unchanged after the September hike, according to Yahoo Finance and IBTimes. "The best outcome for stocks is a boring Fed," BakerAvenue's King Lip said, per Investing.com. Background: the Fed's October rate-hike debate.
  • Inflation and jobs. Economists expect the September PCE price index to show inflation of 3.6% from a year earlier, up from 3.4% in August, IBTimes reported. It said the unemployment rate was 4.2% in September.
  • Middle East. Oil's decline reflected hopes of de-escalation in the region, per Yahoo Finance citing Reuters. No agreement has been confirmed in the sources reviewed.
  • AI deal scrutiny. Large vendor-financed and cross-investment deals, such as Broadcom's arrangement for Anthropic and Nvidia's stake in Meta's offering, are drawing questions about circular financing, Investopedia noted.
  • US midterms. The midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, will decide control of Congress.

What to watch next

  • Wednesday, October 28, 18:00 UTC (2:00 p.m. ET): FOMC rate decision, then the Fed chair's press conference. Alphabet and Microsoft report third-quarter results, according to Yahoo Finance.
  • Thursday, October 29, 12:30 UTC (8:30 a.m. ET): advance Q3 GDP estimate and September personal income and outlays, including PCE inflation, from the BEA.
  • This week: Yahoo Finance's earnings calendar includes Visa, PayPal, Robinhood and Seagate.
  • Tuesday, November 3: US midterm elections.
  • Wednesday, November 4, 13:30 UTC (8:30 a.m. ET): September international trade in goods and services, per the BEA.

Risk checklist for readers

  • Narrow leadership can reverse quickly. On Tuesday the Nasdaq rose 1.18% while the Dow barely moved, a sign that gains rested on one group of stocks.
  • Price-weighted indexes behave differently. The Dow weights members by share price, so a large drop in one stock, such as Boeing, can offset gains elsewhere.
  • Fed days bring event risk. The statement and press conference can move yields, the dollar and stocks within minutes.
  • Financing headlines are not revenue. A deal's headline value may describe a loan structure, not sales a company books right away; read filings and company statements.
  • Earnings reactions can be large. Single stocks can gap 10% or more on results, as Boeing, SoFi and Xylem did on Tuesday.
  • Check timestamps and sources. Early close figures can differ from final data; confirm with exchanges and official sources such as the Treasury.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the S&P 500 up today?

On October 27, 2026, the S&P 500 rose 0.60% to 7,722.60 as semiconductor stocks rallied for a second day. Broadcom gained after announcing a $63 billion financing deal for Anthropic's chip purchases, and falling oil prices also helped, according to Yahoo Finance and Investing.com.

Why can one stock move the Dow so much?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is price-weighted, so higher-priced members carry more weight regardless of company size. A large drop in a single member, such as Boeing on October 27, can offset gains in the rest of the index.

What is the difference between the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite?

The S&P 500 tracks 500 large US companies across all sectors and is weighted by market value. The Nasdaq Composite includes nearly all stocks listed on the Nasdaq exchange and is heavily tilted toward technology, so it often moves more on chip and AI news.
