Instagram Apple TV app launches with Reels, needs tvOS 26
Meta's photo and video app now runs natively on Apple's streaming box. Here is which Apple TV models qualify, how to install it and what Meta has not confirmed yet.
Key takeaways
- Instagram now has an official app on the Apple TV App Store, offering Reels, longer videos and live shows on the TV screen.
- The App Store listing says the app requires tvOS 26.0 or later; it is free, with optional in-app purchases.
- Apple's release metadata dates the Apple TV version to October 23, 2026, according to MacRumors.
- Apple TV is the fourth TV platform for Instagram after Amazon Fire TV (December 2025), Google TV (February 2026) and Samsung smart TVs (June 2026).
- Meta has not published an announcement for the Apple TV launch, so the list of countries where it is offered is still unconfirmed.
The Instagram Apple TV app is now live in the tvOS App Store. The free app surfaced on Friday, October 23. It needs tvOS 26 or later and brings Reels, longer creator videos and live shows to the big screen, per MacRumors.
The release ends a long gap. Instagram has shipped TV apps for other platforms since late 2025, and unofficial third-party viewers have filled the hole on Apple TV for years. This is the first Apple TV app published by Instagram itself.
What the Instagram Apple TV app does
The App Store description opens with the line "Instagram, now on your TV." It lists four main uses: watching favourite creators on a large screen, discovering Reels and longer videos, watching together with friends and family, and picking up where you left off on another device.
Based on Meta's earlier descriptions of Instagram for TV, the core experience is built around channels. Reels are grouped by interest, such as comedy, sports or specific creators, and selecting one starts continuous playback with full sound so viewers do not need to scroll. The interface is designed for a remote control rather than a touchscreen, French site iPhoneSoft noted.
The Apple TV version is the first to list longer videos and live shows in its store description. Meta said in June 2026 that it was exploring longer creator content, episodic series and live broadcasts for TV, a push TechCrunch framed as an attempt to compete with streaming services as well as with YouTube and TikTok.

Which Apple TV models can run it?
The app's only stated hardware requirement is tvOS 26.0 or later. German outlet heise reported in June 2025 that tvOS 26 runs on the Apple TV HD and on all three generations of Apple TV 4K. Older models, such as the third-generation Apple TV from 2012, cannot install App Store apps at all.
If you are not sure which version your box runs, open Settings > General > About on the Apple TV. To update, go to Settings > System > Software Updates and choose Update Software.
How to get Instagram on Apple TV
- Make sure the Apple TV is running tvOS 26 or later (see the steps above).
- Open the App Store app on the Apple TV home screen.
- Select Search, type "Instagram" and pick the app sold by Instagram, Inc. Third-party viewers with similar names also appear in search results.
- Select Get to download the app, then open it from the home screen.
- Sign in with your Instagram account when the app prompts you.
Meta has not published sign-in instructions specific to Apple TV. On Fire TV, Meta's help text said users could sign in on the TV itself or start setup from the Settings and activity menu in the Instagram mobile app. Up to five accounts could be added per TV, and viewers could create a separate Instagram for TV account that is not linked to a main profile. It is reasonable to expect a similar flow on Apple TV, but Meta has not confirmed those details for tvOS.
How it compares with Instagram's other TV apps
Instagram's TV push started as a limited US test and has grown platform by platform. The table below shows the rollout, based on Meta's announcements and the App Store listing.
| Platform | Launch | Stated availability | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Fire TV | December 16, 2025 | US (test) | Interest-based Reels channels; up to 5 accounts per TV |
| Google TV | February 24, 2026 | US | Added in an update to Meta's original post |
| Samsung smart TVs | June 2026 | US, 2020 models and newer | Meta also announced casting and Stories on TV tests |
| Apple TV | October 23, 2026 | Not confirmed by Meta | Requires tvOS 26; listing names longer videos and live shows |

In June 2026 Meta said casting Reels from a phone to the TV, including videos from the Saved tab, was available on Google TV and Fire TV. It did not say whether casting would come to Apple TV, and the Apple TV listing does not mention it.
The Apple TV launch also follows Instagram's dedicated iPad app, which arrived in September 2025, as MacRumors noted.
What Meta has not confirmed
- Countries: Meta's earlier TV launches were US-only, and the listing reviewed here is the US App Store. Meta has not said which other storefronts carry the Apple TV app.
- Sign-in and account limits on tvOS: the five-account limit and separate TV accounts were described for Fire TV, not Apple TV.
- Feature parity: it is not confirmed whether casting, Stories on TV or horizontal-video sections work on Apple TV.
- Official announcement: MacRumors' report carried no statement from Meta, and Bullquill found no Meta Newsroom post about the Apple TV release as of October 25, 2026.
Teen accounts and content ratings
Meta said in its Fire TV announcement that TV content generally follows the 13+ rating system used in the mobile app. Teen Accounts keep the same safeguards as on mobile, and time spent on TV counts toward their usage limits. Meta updated that post in May 2026 to reflect an agreement with the Motion Picture Association on content ratings. The Apple TV listing carries a 13+ age rating and mentions age assurance and parental controls. Parents can read more about the wider debate in our report on Greece's social media ban for under-15s.
What it means
For Apple TV owners, the change is simple: Instagram no longer needs AirPlay mirroring from a phone or an unofficial viewer app. For Meta, Apple TV fills one of the last major gaps in its living-room lineup. Instagram now has apps across Amazon, Google, Samsung and Apple's TV platforms as it competes with YouTube for TV viewing time.
The listing's focus on longer videos and live shows also suggests that Instagram's TV product is moving past short Reels toward the formats Meta outlined in June. That puts it more directly against streaming apps on the same home screen.
The timing also lands days before Apple's own news cycle. Apple has scheduled an event for October 28; see our guide to Apple's Pro and Tell event. For more on both companies, browse our Meta and Apple topic pages.
