What happened

On September 16, 2026, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) raised the federal funds target range by a quarter point, to 3.75%–4.00%, from the 3.50%–3.75% range it held in July.

The vote was 12–0. In July, the hold passed 9–3, with Beth M. Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie K. Logan dissenting in favor of an immediate quarter-point increase. Analysis: Taken together, the two votes suggest July's disagreement was mainly about timing.

The Fed's implementation note set the supporting rates, effective September 17, 2026:

RateNew level
Interest rate on reserve balances3.90%
Overnight reverse repo offering rate3.75%
Primary credit (discount window) rate4.00%
Standing overnight repo operations4.00%

The minutes list Kevin Warsh first among the voters; the Board's website lists him as Chairman, and Jerome H. Powell remains a Board member.

Why the Fed acted

The statement says "Economic activity is expanding at a solid pace" and "Inflation remains elevated," and that the move "will support a timelier return to the Committee's 2 percent goal."

The minutes, released October 7, 2026, add detail. In our reading:

  • Energy. Oil and fuel prices pushed up by geopolitical events weighed heavily. Many participants worried that persistently high energy costs could feed into prices more broadly.
  • AI investment. Some participants said the AI build-out was raising core goods prices and wages for skilled workers, and could push demand ahead of supply.
  • Services. A few participants noted that software and portfolio-management fees had boosted recent PCE inflation readings, an effect expected to fade after methodology changes at the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
  • Tariffs. Their price effects were described as fading, though several participants flagged new tariffs as an upside risk.

Many participants also framed the hike as insurance against persistent inflation. Some voiced concern about "more than five years of inflation above 2 percent."

What officials expect next

The Summary of Economic Projections shows participants' median forecasts. These are projections, not commitments.

Median, Q4 of year2026 (Sept.)2026 (June)2027 (Sept.)Longer run
Federal funds rate4.1%3.8%4.1%3.2%
PCE inflation3.7%3.6%2.3%2.0%
Core PCE inflation3.4%3.3%2.5%–
Unemployment rate4.1%4.3%4.1%4.2%
Real GDP growth2.3%2.2%2.4%2.0%

Analysis: With the current midpoint at 3.875%, a year-end median of 4.1% implies roughly one more quarter-point increase in 2026. The minutes say most participants saw another increase as likely appropriate by year-end, while approaching each meeting "with an open mind." The remaining 2026 meetings are October 27–28 and December 8–9.

What it means for readers

Analysis. Most people feel the federal funds rate indirectly:

  • Borrowers. Rates tied to short-term benchmarks, such as many credit cards and variable-rate loans, tend to reprice after Fed moves. Fixed mortgage rates are set in markets and reflect expectations about the whole policy path.
  • Savers. Banks may adjust deposit rates, but pass-through varies by institution and country.
  • Outside the US. Higher US rates can strengthen the dollar. Bank Indonesia held its BI-Rate at 5.75% on September 23, 2026, citing "persistently strong external headwinds," with the rupiah at Rp17,855 per US dollar on September 22. Its BI-Rate table shows the rate rising from 4.75% on April 22 to 5.75% on June 18, 2026. We do not draw a direct causal link to the Fed.

The decision itself does not tell anyone what to do with their money; its effect depends on each person's loans, savings and currency exposure.
