FAMU shooting: what happened near Bragg Memorial Stadium

Officers responded to the shooting just before 8:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 24 (about 00:00 UTC on Sunday, October 25), Chief Lawrence Revell told reporters, according to WCTV. The Tallahassee Police Department first placed the scene at Perry Street and Manatee Street, a short distance from Bragg Memorial Stadium on the FAMU campus.

Revell said roughly two dozen officers were already in the area when the shots were fired, because the whole department was on duty for the homecoming weekend, WCTV reported. Fox television stations reported that the chief praised officers who carried victims to safety and to hospitals.

Florida A&M issued a safety alert at about 8:40 p.m. local time (00:40 UTC), telling people near the stadium to shelter in place or avoid the area, according to Anadolu Agency. Florida State University, also in Tallahassee, told its students, faculty and staff to stay indoors as a precaution and said there was no indication its community was involved.

At a news conference just after midnight local time (about 04:00 UTC), Revell said: "I stand before you devastated," WCTV reported. He said it was still unknown what had happened and that he believed the shooting was an isolated incident.

Victims: ages and injuries

Police and media reports agree on the total of 12 injured. Reports differ slightly on how many people are in serious or critical condition, which is common in the first hours after a mass-casualty event.

Background

Florida A&M University is a public historically Black university in Tallahassee, the state capital. Homecoming is one of the busiest weekends on its calendar and draws alumni, families and visitors to the area around Bragg Memorial Stadium, the home field of the FAMU Rattlers football team.

Tallahassee police had planned for the crowds: Revell said the entire department was working the homecoming weekend and about two dozen officers were already near the scene, according to WCTV. Even so, the gunfire left 12 people hurt, and police have not yet described how the altercation escalated into a shooting.

What it means

For students and visitors, the police chief said he believed the incident was isolated. The investigation is at an early stage, and the key open questions are the identity of the shooter or shooters and whether any arrests follow. Expect further updates from the Tallahassee Police Department and the university on Sunday, October 25, including possible changes to the injury figures.

Because the shooting happened on a public street outside the stadium rather than inside the venue, questions about crowd safety after the game are likely to fall to city police as well as the university. For follow-up coverage, see our Florida and Tallahassee Police Department topic pages.
