Discord messages may appear on Google: how to opt out
From November 16 every Discoverable Server gets a public web page, and from mid-December individual messages can show up in search. Here is how to switch it off, and what the toggle does not cover.
Key takeaways
- Discord will give each of its more than 63,000 Discoverable Servers a public web page on November 16, 2026, with automated summaries of public channel conversations.
- From mid-December 2026, individual messages from public channels in those servers can appear on the web and in search engines such as Google, without usernames or avatars.
- Users can opt out in User Settings > Data & Privacy; admins can remove channels or the whole server in Server Settings > Web Presence.
- The member setting is off by default in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, and teen accounts are excluded.
- Opting out only covers future messages. Deleting a message is the only way to take down one that is already published.
If you post in a large public Discord community, your messages could be visible to anyone searching Google from mid-December unless you switch off one privacy setting. Discord announced the change on October 27, and it applies only to what the company calls Discoverable Servers.
This guide sets out what is changing and when, which servers are covered, and how to opt out of Google search as a member or as a server admin. It also covers what the opt-out cannot undo. Details come from Discord's own announcement on its blog, checked against reporting by TechCrunch, Engadget and Cointelegraph.
What Discord is changing and when
The rollout comes in two stages. The first starts on November 16, 2026, when every Discoverable Server gets a Server Web Page. According to Discord's blog post, if an admin has not set up the page, a default version will go live that day using details from the server's existing profile. The page can then show Channel Summaries, which are automated summaries of active conversations in public channels.
The second stage starts in mid-December 2026. Channel Messages, meaning individual messages posted in public channels, can then appear on those pages and in web search results. Discord says the rollout will be gradual, so it may be a few weeks before messages show up. Discord has not given an exact December date.
In its post, Discord says it wants to "help more people find and benefit from the knowledge shared in Discord communities." Many gaming guides, fan wikis and technical answers that once lived on public forums are now only in Discord chats, which search engines cannot reach.
| Feature | Start date | What appears | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server Web Page | Nov 16, 2026 | Server description and profile details | Admins (can edit at any time) |
| Channel Summaries | Nov 16, 2026 | Automated summaries of public channel conversations, no usernames or avatars | Admins (pick channels, curate or turn off) |
| Channel Messages | Mid-December 2026 (gradual) | Individual public channel messages on web pages and in search, no usernames or avatars | Admins (channels) and members (own messages) |
| Admin controls | Rolling out from Oct 27, 2026 | Server Settings > Web Presence | Admins |

Which Discord servers are affected
The change is limited to Discoverable Servers, which Discord calls "the most public spaces on Discord." To qualify for Server Discovery, a server needs at least 1,000 members, must be at least eight weeks old, and must meet Discord's activity and safety requirements. Engadget and Cointelegraph both note that these servers do not require an invitation to join. Discord puts the number of Discoverable Servers at more than 63,000.
The communities involved cover gaming strategy, fandoms, language learning and niche hobbies, according to TechCrunch. Cointelegraph counted about 800 Discoverable Servers tagged "cryptocurrency," about 1,400 tagged "trading" and more than 700 tagged "finance." That matters for people who share wallet details, trading positions or personal stories in public channels.
The change does not cover private servers, direct messages or group DMs. Discord says channels where content may appear on the web will be labeled, so members know before they post.
How to opt out of Google search on Discord (users)
Members control their own messages with a single switch that applies to every Discoverable Server they belong to:
- Open Discord on desktop or mobile and go to User Settings, the gear icon next to your name.
- Select Data & Privacy.
- Find "Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages" and turn it off.
Cointelegraph advises changing the setting before message sharing begins in mid-December. Anything you post while the setting is on can be published, and turning it off later does not remove those messages.
Regional defaults and teen accounts
Your starting position depends on where you are. Discord says the member setting is off by default in the European Union, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, so users there have to opt in manually. Engadget reports the regional defaults reflect local regulations. Everywhere else, including the United States, the setting is on unless you switch it off.
Teen users are left out entirely. Discord says they cannot turn on Channel Messages until they reach adulthood.
How server admins can opt out
Admins and moderators get broader controls under Server Settings > Web Presence, which Discord began rolling out on October 27. From there, admins can:
- choose which public channels take part in Channel Messages, or opt every channel out;
- change which channels feed Channel Summaries, curate those summaries, or turn summaries off separately;
- edit the Server Web Page that goes live on November 16.
The default matters here too. According to Discord, if an admin changes nothing, public channels stay included. Admins who run support, recovery or other sensitive channels inside a Discoverable Server should review Web Presence before mid-December.
What the opt-out does not cover
- Past messages are safe, future ones are not. Discord says messages sent before mid-December 2026 will not be shown. After that, any message sent while the switch is on can be published.
- Turning the switch off is not retroactive. According to Discord, messages you sent while the setting was on stay up unless you delete them from Discord.
- Search caches can linger. Cointelegraph, citing Discord's help center, reports that search engines may keep cached copies of a deleted message for some time.
- No names is not the same as anonymous. Usernames and avatars are hidden, but the text of a message can still identify someone if it includes personal details.
Why some users are worried
TechCrunch reports that some users argue that posting in a public server is not the same as agreeing to be searchable across the internet, where messages can be read out of context. Others are worried about AI training, comparing the plan to past Reddit controversies over sharing user data. Discord's announcement does not address AI training. Cointelegraph also found supporters in Discord's Reddit announcement thread, including one user who called the change "very much necessary."
What it means
For Discord, the move is an attempt to make the knowledge locked inside large communities visible to search engines and, potentially, to bring new members to those servers. For users, the default is what counts. Outside the six opt-in regions, public-channel messages in Discoverable Servers become eligible for the web unless the member or the admin acts.
The practical steps are short. Members who do not want their words on Google should turn off the Data & Privacy setting before mid-December. Admins should review Server Settings > Web Presence channel by channel. Anyone who has already posted something they regret will have to delete it.
