Barclays job cuts: 5,000 roles to go, Unite says AI is an excuse
About 1,000 roles have already gone and 4,000 more are due by the end of the fourth quarter, finance director Anna Cross said. Chief executive C. S. Venkatakrishnan called AI "the icing on the cake, not the cake".
Update, October 23, 2026
Barclays job cuts will remove about 5,000 roles in 2026, roughly 5% of the workforce, mostly in support functions. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham says the bank is "using AI as an excuse to discard its loyal and long-suffering workforce".
When this article was first published, we had found no union statement. As of 23 October, Barclays had not published a breakdown of the cuts by country or said how many would be compulsory redundancies. We found no public report on the outcome of the talks with Unite.
Key takeaways
- Barclays plans to remove about 5,000 roles in 2026, roughly 5% of its workforce. About 1,000 have already gone and the remaining 4,000 are due by the end of the fourth quarter, finance director Anna Cross told reporters (Reuters, City AM).
- Cross said about 60% of the cuts fall on support functions, including software developers. Chief executive C. S. Venkatakrishnan said the roles are mostly operational and functional.
- Barclays' written Q3 2026 results do not give the 5,000 figure. They refer to "expected technology-enabled FTE reductions" and £201 million of structural cost actions in the quarter, with about £300 million more planned for Q4.
- The bank describes AI as one driver among several. Venkatakrishnan called it "the icing on the cake, not the cake" (City AM).
- The Unite union, which represents about 36,000 Barclays staff, accused the bank of "using AI as an excuse" to cut jobs and said it is in urgent talks with management (BBC, Briefs, Personnel Today).
- Barclays joins Standard Chartered, DBS and HSBC among large banks that have publicly tied workforce plans to AI and automation.
Barclays job cuts: what the bank has actually said
The Barclays job cuts were announced on 22 October 2026, the same day the London-based lender published its third-quarter results. The headline number, about 5,000 jobs this year, came from management comments to reporters and analysts rather than from the results document. Reuters, City AM, CNBC, Bloomberg and the BBC all reported the same figure on the day.
According to Reuters, Anna Cross said 1,000 roles had already been cut and the rest would go by year-end. City AM reported that about 1,000 roles went in the first half of 2026 and that the rest will be cut across the third and fourth quarters. Bloomberg put Barclays' headcount at about 93,000 at the end of 2025. On that basis, 5,000 roles is a little over 5% of staff.
The written Q3 2026 Results Announcement is more cautious. In its performance highlights, Barclays says it is "structurally reducing the cost base through expected technology-enabled FTE reductions, creating capacity for further investment in the business". FTE means full-time equivalent. The document does not mention AI by name in that passage, and it gives no total for jobs.
Barclays' one-page investor summary for the quarter is more direct about strategy. One of its investment-case bullet points reads "driving operating leverage, by adopting digital and AI at scale".
What role is AI playing?
Many headlines framed this as an "AI job cuts" story. The bank's own wording is broader. City AM quoted Venkatakrishnan saying the affected roles are "primarily related to operational and functional roles that service our business". He also described AI as "the icing on the cake, not the cake". Sky News, cited in a Digg round-up of the coverage, quoted him linking the cuts to technology investments made over several years.
So Barclays presents the reductions as the result of a longer automation and simplification programme, with AI as one part of it. The same results also highlight digital launches, such as a new Barclays mobile banking app and the iPortal platform for corporate clients. Barclays has not published figures showing how many roles a specific AI system replaced, or how much of the developer reduction comes from AI coding tools.
Which functions are affected?
CNBC and Reuters reported that the cuts fall mainly on support functions, including developers. Cross put that share at about 60%. City AM said the cuts span the whole bank. Sky News reported that Barclays had not said where in its global operations the losses would fall. The results show where the restructuring charges are being booked:
| Measure (Barclays Group) | Q3 2026 | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Structural cost actions (SCAs) | £201m | £93m in Q3 2025 |
| SCAs booked in Barclays UK | £110m in Q3; £158m year to date | UK retail division |
| SCAs booked in the Investment Bank | £57m in Q3 | Part of a 4% rise in IB costs |
| Further SCAs planned | c.£300m in Q4 2026 | Guided at H1 2026 |
| Cost efficiency savings | c.£200m in Q3; c.£550m year to date | Partly offset cost growth |
| Group total costs guidance | c.£18.5bn (FY26) | c.£18.4bn (FY27) |
| Gross efficiency savings target | >£2bn | 2026-2028 |

Why now: costs, targets and a softer quarter
The announcement came at the end of Barclays' original three-year plan. The bank said it had met, or was on track to meet, all of its 2026 group targets, including a return on tangible equity above 12%. It is aiming for a cost-to-income ratio in the "low 50s" percent by 2028, down from 57% for the first nine months of 2026.
The quarter itself was mixed. Profit before tax was £2.3 billion, up 12% year on year. Reuters and City AM both said this was slightly below analyst expectations, which City AM put at £2.4 billion. Fixed income trading income fell 19%, while equities rose 47%. Venkatakrishnan told reporters he was "disappointed" with fixed income, Reuters reported. Reuters also said Barclays shares fell 2.5% in early London trading on 22 October. That move appears to reflect the results more broadly, and no outlet has attributed it specifically to the job cuts.
How Barclays compares with other large banks
Barclays is not the first big lender to link staffing to AI, but the plans differ in scale, timing and the type of staff affected:
| Bank | Stated plan | Timeline | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barclays | About 5,000 roles (~5% of staff), about 60% in support functions | During 2026 | Reuters, City AM, 22 Oct 2026 |
| Standard Chartered | Cut 15% of corporate-function roles, almost 8,000 jobs | By 2030 | Reuters, 20 May 2026 |
| DBS | About 4,000 contract and temporary roles, through non-renewal | Over three years from Feb 2025 | Yahoo Finance, Feb 2025 |
| HSBC | No bank-wide AI job number published. The CEO has said generative AI "will destroy certain jobs and will create new jobs" | Not specified | Reuters, 20 May 2026 |
| Wells Fargo | CEO said in December that the bank had not cut headcount because of AI | Not applicable | Reuters, 20 May 2026 |
Compared with these banks, Barclays' plan is short-term and large in absolute terms. Standard Chartered's plan runs to 2030. DBS's reductions apply to non-permanent staff and come from contracts not being renewed. Barclays has not said how many of its 5,000 roles will be met by redundancies rather than attrition or redeployment. Reuters reported in May that Morgan Stanley analysts estimated banking, technology and professional-services firms had shed about one in 20 staff over the previous year because of AI.
This is part of a broader shift in how companies talk about AI and costs. On Wall Street, IBM's latest results and Meta's AI spending plans show the investment side of the same trade-off. In Europe, the EU AI Act sets rules for how high-risk AI systems, including some used in employment and credit, must be governed.
What is not yet confirmed
- Country split: Barclays has not published how many of the roles are in the UK, the US, India or elsewhere.
- Redundancies versus attrition: It is unclear how many roles will go through compulsory redundancy and how many through leavers not being replaced, contract endings or redeployment.
- The AI share: The bank has not said how many roles were displaced by AI specifically, as opposed to other automation, process simplification or restructuring.
- Union talks: Unite has criticised the plan and says it is negotiating with Barclays. No outcome of those talks had been reported as of 23 October.
- Further cuts: The >£2 billion efficiency target runs to 2028. Barclays has not said whether more headcount reductions will follow in 2027.
What it means
Barclays has shown how a large bank can turn AI and automation into a specific cost-cutting plan. It has a headcount number, a year-end deadline, and restructuring charges booked line by line. For employees, the support and technology functions are most exposed, and that includes software development, which until recently was seen as a growth area.
For the wider debate about AI and jobs, Barclays' framing matters. Management calls AI "the icing on the cake", which places it inside a multi-year efficiency programme rather than presenting it as the single cause. That makes it hard to say how many jobs AI alone is removing, at Barclays or elsewhere. Clearer answers may come with the bank's full-year results, which are provisionally scheduled for 9 February 2027. Frequently asked questions
How many jobs is Barclays cutting?
About 5,000 roles in 2026, roughly 5% of its workforce. Finance director Anna Cross told reporters on 22 October 2026 that about 1,000 had already gone and the remaining 4,000 would go by the end of the fourth quarter, according to Reuters.
Is Barclays replacing staff with AI?
Partly. Barclays links the cuts to years of technology investment and describes them as technology-enabled. Chief executive C. S. Venkatakrishnan called AI "the icing on the cake, not the cake", which presents AI as one part of a wider automation and cost programme. The bank has not said how many roles AI alone has replaced.
Which Barclays jobs are affected?
Mostly support, operational and functional roles. Cross said about 60% of the cuts are in support functions, including software developers. Barclays has not published a breakdown by country.
How has the Unite union responded to the Barclays job cuts?
Unite, which represents about 36,000 Barclays staff, criticised the plan. General secretary Sharon Graham said the bank was "using AI as an excuse to discard its loyal and long-suffering workforce", according to the BBC. The union says it is in urgent negotiations with Barclays. As of 23 October 2026, no outcome of those talks had been reported.
Which other banks are cutting jobs because of AI?
Standard Chartered said in May 2026 that it would cut 15% of its corporate-function roles by 2030, almost 8,000 jobs. DBS said in February 2025 that it expected about 4,000 contract and temporary roles to end over three years as AI takes over tasks.
