## What happened in Game 4

Golden State won 67-62 in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon (the game tipped off at 17:00 UTC) in front of a sellout crowd of more than 17,000, NBC News reported. It was the Valkyries' first road win of the series, three days after a heavy defeat in Game 3.

Head coach Natalie Nakase changed her starting lineup, bringing in Tiffany Hayes and Kaila Charles for Cecilia Zandalasini and Kayla Thornton. According to ESPN, the Valkyries opened with a 9-0 run and pushed their lead to 16 points in the first half. Hayes scored all 13 of her points after the break.

Atlanta answered with a 14-4 run in the third quarter, ESPN said, and cut the margin to 61-55 midway through the fourth quarter, according to NBC News. Golden State held on from there.

Williams finished with 17 points, three assists and three steals, although she missed all six of her three-point attempts. "I didn't like who I was in that last game," she said afterwards, as quoted by NBC News.

### Kiah Stokes and the Valkyries' defence

The Valkyries' defence decided the game. Atlanta shot 33.3% from the field and made 4 of 23 three-pointers, NBC News reported. Kiah Stokes grabbed 16 rebounds, eight of them offensive, and blocked three shots.

Stokes now has 14 blocks in this series, a Finals record that passes the 12 recorded by Brittney Griner and Sylvia Fowles, according to NBC News. ESPN noted that she is the first player with at least three blocks in four straight Finals games.

Stokes was also Reese's main defender. Reese finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds on 2-of-12 shooting. She had averaged 25.5 points and 14 rebounds in Atlanta's two wins. "I rushed my shots," Reese told reporters, according to ESPN. Howard's 19 points and eight rebounds led the Dream.

## What we know and what we don't know yet

- **Known:** Game 5 is on 26 October at Chase Center, with tip-off at 8 p.m. ET, on USA Network and Peacock. The winner will be one victory away from the title.
- **Known:** Both teams are chasing their first WNBA championship.
- **Not yet confirmed:** Where a Game 6 in Atlanta would be played. ESPN reported that State Farm Arena, where the Dream have hosted this series, is booked for an Atlanta Hawks game against the Cleveland Cavaliers that night. The Dream's regular home court, The Gateway, seats about 3,500.
- **Unclear:** The fitness of Atlanta guard Allisha Gray. She missed two games with a hand injury before the Finals, and ESPN reported she says she is "feeling fine" but not at 100%.
- **Unknown:** Whether Nakase will keep the new starting lineup for Game 5\. No Game 5 lineup had been reported as of 22:40 UTC on 24 October.

## Background: two teams chasing a first title

The Valkyries joined the WNBA as an expansion team in 2025\. That season they became the first expansion franchise to reach the playoffs in their first year, Al Jazeera reported. In their second season they finished with the league's best defensive and net ratings, according to NBC. They beat the Dallas Wings in the first round and then swept the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in the semi-finals.

Atlanta is in its fourth WNBA Finals and its first since 2013\. The Dream lost in their three previous Finals. Under coach Karl Smesko they have won at least 30 games in each of the last two seasons, and NBC lists Reese as the league's 2026 Defensive Player of the Year.

The series has swung back and forth. Williams scored 26 points, including four free throws in the final 78 seconds, as Golden State won a tight Game 1, 68-64\. Reese then had 30 points and 16 rebounds in Atlanta's 79-65 win in Game 2\. Atlanta also won Game 3 comfortably at home. Game 2 was the Dream's first Finals win in franchise history, after they went 0-10 in Finals games across their three earlier trips, CBS Sports reported.

## What it means

Game 4 turned a 2-1 deficit into a best-of-three in which Golden State has home court for two of the three remaining games. If the Valkyries win the title, they would be champions in only their second season as a franchise. The Dream are trying to win the first championship in their history, at the fourth attempt.

For Atlanta, the key question is whether Reese bounces back from her quietest game of the series. The Dream also made only 4 of 23 three-pointers in Game 4\. NBC News reported that across the first three games Atlanta outscored Golden State 60-35 in third quarters, which was the stretch where the Dream pulled away in Game 2\. On the scoring evidence so far, the Valkyries' defence is their best route to a title: they held Atlanta to 64 points in Game 1 and 62 in Game 4.
