## Key takeaways

- Valero Energy's Q3 2026 results show net income of $6.8 billion, or $23.89 per share, up from $1.1 billion, or $3.53 per share, a year earlier, according to the company's October 22 earnings release filed with the SEC.
- The main driver was the refining margin, which rose to $39.24 per barrel of throughput from $13.14, roughly three times the year-earlier level.
- One-time items barely moved the numbers: adjusted earnings were $23.90 per share, almost identical to reported earnings.
- Cash and cash equivalents reached $9.8 billion at September 30, and the company put its net debt-to-capitalization ratio at 4%.
- Valero executives linked strong margins to freight costs, low product inventories and solid export demand. They also said margins depend on market conditions that can change.

## Valero Q3 2026 results: what the company reported

Valero Q3 2026 results showed net income attributable to stockholders of $6,828 million, or $23.89 per share, up from $1,095 million a year earlier, the San Antonio-based refiner said on October 22\. Its refining margin rose to $39.24 per barrel from $13.14\. Higher fuel costs are reaching travellers: [US airfares rose 22.4%](https://bullquill.com/us-airlines-higher-fares-fuel-costs-capacity/) in September from a year earlier.

Adjusted net income, which strips out items the company treats as unusual, was $6,831 million, or $23.90 per share, against $3.66 per share a year earlier. Reuters reported that analysts had expected adjusted earnings of $21.07 per share, citing LSEG data, and that it was the company's highest-ever quarterly profit and its second straight record quarter. Reuters also reported that Valero shares rose 2.6% in premarket trading on October 22.

Valero was the first large U.S. refiner to report for the quarter, so its numbers are an early read on an industry that has been at the centre of this year's energy-market disruption. ## Why profit jumped sixfold

### The margin per barrel tripled

A refiner earns the gap between what it pays for crude oil and what it gets for gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products. Valero's refining margin, the company's measure of that gap, was $39.24 per barrel in the quarter. A year earlier it was $13.14\. For the wider effect, see [how oil price shocks hit inflation and rates](https://bullquill.com/how-oil-price-shocks-hit-inflation-and-rates/).

Volume did not drive the gain. Throughput actually fell about 4%, to 2,972 thousand barrels per day from 3,087 thousand. Part of that drop reflects the Benicia refinery in California, which the release says stopped operating in April 2026\. Even so, each barrel was far more profitable. Refining operating income per barrel, on an adjusted basis, rose to $32.09 from $5.86.

Reuters reported that disruption linked to the Middle East conflict pushed refining margins sharply higher during the quarter. It said the 3-2-1 crack spread, a common benchmark for refinery margins, averaged more than 150% above its year-earlier level from July to September.

### Every region improved

The margin gain was broad-based. The U.S. Gulf Coast, Valero's largest system, contributed $6,472 million of the $10,730 million refining margin, about 60%.

| Region | Margin per barrel, Q3 2026 | Margin per barrel, Q3 2025 |
| ------------------ | -------------------------- | -------------------------- |
| U.S. Gulf Coast | $37.55 | $12.21 |
| U.S. Mid-Continent | $39.27 | $11.31 |
| North Atlantic | $45.58 | $17.10 |
| U.S. West Coast | $38.81 | $15.22 |

### Plants ran hard, with few one-offs

Chairman, CEO and President Lane Riggs said in the release that Valero's refineries "operated at near-record utilization rates". The company did not give a utilization percentage. It also said it finished the FCC unit optimization project at its St. Charles refinery in Louisiana on schedule and within budget.

Special items were small. The release lists $4 million of expenses in the quarter tied to a March 2026 fire at the Port Arthur refinery. That helps explain why reported and adjusted earnings per share differ by just one cent.

### What management said on the call

On the earnings call, Valero executives gave their reasons for the strong margins. Randy Hawkins described freight costs as "the main story right now in the market". He said higher tanker rates had widened discounts on crude available to Gulf Coast plants, especially heavy sour grades. Lane Riggs pointed to low product inventories and limited spare refining capacity worldwide. Gary Simmons said export demand was very strong and added, "we are not seeing any signs of demand destruction at all."

U.S. drivers have felt the other side of these margins at the pump; see [how gasoline prices are straining household budgets](https://bullquill.com/us-gas-prices-strain-household-budgets/).

## Other segments also grew

Renewable diesel, produced through the Diamond Green Diesel joint venture, earned $353 million of operating income, after a $28 million loss a year earlier, as its margin rose to $1.62 per gallon from $0.50\. The ethanol segment earned $272 million, up from $183 million, and Valero said ethanol production of 4,799 thousand gallons per day set a quarterly record.

## Cash returns and balance sheet

Valero said stockholder cash returns equalled 52% of adjusted net cash provided by operating activities. On adjusted operating cash flow of $7,253 million, that works out to roughly $3.8 billion by Bullquill's calculation. The release does not split that amount between dividends and share repurchases. The quarterly dividend was $1.20 per share.

Capital investments were $432 million, of which $371 million went to sustaining the business. Valero repaid $100 million of 7.65% debentures in July and $426 million of 3.400% senior notes in September.

| Balance sheet item | Sept 30, 2026 | Dec 31, 2025 |
| -------------------------- | -------------- | -------------- |
| Cash and cash equivalents | $9,840 million | $4,688 million |
| Total debt | $8,579 million | $8,261 million |
| Finance lease obligations | $2,422 million | n/a |

## The caveat: margins are set by the market

Valero does not set its refining margin. Crude prices, product prices and freight rates set it, and all three have moved sharply this year with developments in the Middle East. For background on the geopolitical side, see [Trump's comments on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz](https://bullquill.com/trump-says-us-not-negotiating-with-iran/), and for crude-price moves, our [oil daily brief](https://bullquill.com/oil-daily-brief-2026-10-21/).

Management was upbeat but noted risks. Simmons said he viewed the current crack spread environment as "very sustainable", citing weak economics at less complex refineries in Asia. He also said a sharp rise in crude prices could squeeze refinery cracks, and that gasoline cracks had eased seasonally. Valero's Q4 throughput guidance adds up to roughly 2.87 to 2.98 million barrels per day across its four regions, close to third-quarter levels.

Before the conflict-driven disruption, margins near $13 per barrel were normal for Valero. A quarter at $39 shows what extreme market conditions do to a refiner's earnings. It does not show what the company earns in an ordinary year. Readers should treat the third quarter as exceptional, not as a new baseline.

## What it means

Three conditions together drove Valero's record quarter: unusually wide margins per barrel, plants running near full capacity, and almost no one-time charges. The company has used the cash to build a large cash balance, pay down maturing debt and return capital to shareholders, which leaves its balance sheet with very little net debt.

For the wider economy, refiner profits are the flip side of high fuel prices for consumers and businesses. For the refining industry, Valero's report sets the reference point for peers that report in the coming days. Their results will show whether the margin surge was industry-wide or specific to Valero's Gulf Coast-heavy system and access to discounted crude. As with [other Q3 2026 reports](https://bullquill.com/tesla-q3-2026-results-capex-cut/), the figures describe the past quarter and say nothing certain about the next one.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much did Valero earn in Q3 2026?

Valero reported net income attributable to stockholders of $6.8 billion, or $23.89 per share, for the third quarter of 2026, compared with $1.1 billion, or $3.53 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were $23.90 per share.

### Why did Valero's profit rise so much?
