## Session recap

Thursday's session split the market in two. Money left technology and AI-linked shares and moved into consumer staples, health care, homebuilders and Treasuries. The Nasdaq absorbed most of the damage, while the price-weighted Dow finished almost unchanged. It followed a [mixed Tuesday session](https://bullquill.com/us-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-21/) in which money had already started rotating away from megacap tech.

At midday, Reuters reported that technology was down more than 2.7% and consumer staples up 2.5%. TheStreet said it was the best day for staples since July. Breadth was more balanced than the headline drop suggests. At midday, NYSE decliners outnumbered advancers by only 1.06 to 1, but the Nasdaq Composite had 247 new 52-week lows against 70 new highs, per Reuters.

## What drove it

### Earnings: Meta, Tesla and the AI spending bill

Meta's third-quarter revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion, and it guided fourth-quarter revenue to $73–76 billion, according to its [SEC filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001326801/000162828026066700/meta-09302026xexhibit991.htm?ref=bullquill.com). It also spent $34.91 billion on capital expenditure in the quarter, raised the low end of its 2026 capex range to $135–145 billion, and booked a $9.9 billion legal charge. Its shares fell 6.98% to $648.85, per quote data shown by The Motley Fool. Reuters linked part of the reaction to Meta's plan for a new non-voting share class to fund AI expansion. Meta's [credit-risk gauges](https://bullquill.com/meta-credit-default-swaps-record-ai-debt/) also rose.

Tesla's adjusted earnings of $0.48 a share beat the $0.44 estimate, but revenue of $28.05 billion was slightly below the $28.13 billion consensus, according to Yahoo Finance. The company also [cut its 2026 capex outlook](https://bullquill.com/tesla-q3-2026-results-capex-cut/). The shares closed down 3.1%.

### Chipmakers and supply constraints

Lam Research guided quarterly revenue to $8.6 billion. Its chief financial officer said the figure "would have been a bit higher if not for some near-term supply chain constraints," Yahoo Finance reported. Selling spread to [AMD, Intel, Micron and Nvidia](https://bullquill.com/chip-stocks-slump-semiconductor-index-ai-costs/), and Reuters reported the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down 5.6% at midday. Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers told Reuters that semiconductors had been "elevated to a huge degree" by the rush into the AI build-out.

### Macro data and the Fed

Initial jobless claims fell to 194,000, the lowest since July, Yahoo Finance and TheStreet reported. Reuters said the resilient labour data supports expectations that the Federal Reserve will leave rates unchanged next week. Treasuries rallied anyway as a haven. According to TheStreet, the 10-year yield had its biggest one-day drop since August 2025\. Next session: our [US stocks brief for Oct. 23](https://bullquill.com/us-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-23/).

### Oil and geopolitics

Brent rose as much as $112.68 a barrel, its highest since May 18, and WTI briefly topped $100, Reuters reported via RTÉ. Yemen's Houthis struck targets in Saudi Arabia, including an oil field and Dammam airport. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had hit vessels in the northern Gulf. These are intraday prices; settlement levels were not available at the time of writing.

### Flows and sentiment

Bank of America said its clients sold $9.1 billion of US equities last week, led by institutions, according to TheStreet. **Analysis:** the jump in the VIX shows investors paying more for protection. A falling Nasdaq alongside a flat Dow points to rotation between sectors, not broad liquidation.

## Political & policy watch

- **Iran and the midterms.** Yahoo Finance, citing The New York Times, reported that US and Israeli militaries have drawn up plans for renewed strikes on Iran after the November 3 midterm elections. President Trump separately said the US is [not negotiating with Iran](https://bullquill.com/trump-says-us-not-negotiating-with-iran/). Neither government has announced a decision.
- **Saudi Arabia.** US officials told Reuters that the State Department ordered some diplomats and their families to leave Saudi Arabia. Saudi Aramco reportedly told staff to evacuate its Dhahran headquarters, citing six sources.
- **The Fed.** The Federal Open Market Committee meets on October 27–28 under Chair Kevin Warsh. The [debate over another hike](https://bullquill.com/fed-october-meeting-rate-hike-debate-explained/) continues, with inflation at 3.7% in September, per Trading Economics.
- **Midterms.** Control of Congress, and with it tax, spending, tariff and regulatory policy, is decided on November 3.

## Risk checklist for readers

- **Index construction matters.** The Dow is price-weighted and the Nasdaq is cap-weighted, so the same day can look calm on one and stormy on the other.
- **Concentration risk.** A handful of AI-linked megacaps carry large index weights; news from a few companies can move benchmarks sharply.
- **Read the VIX as a range, not a forecast.** It reflects expected 30-day S&P 500 volatility implied by options prices, not a prediction of direction.
- **Event risk is clustered.** Big-tech earnings, the Fed, Israel's election and the US midterms fall within 12 days.
- **Oil headlines move fast.** Intraday crude prices around attacks can reverse once facts are confirmed; check official statements.
- **Check timestamps.** Midday and closing figures differ; this brief marks which numbers are intraday.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why can the Dow rise while the Nasdaq falls sharply?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tracks 30 stocks weighted by share price, while the Nasdaq Composite is weighted by market value and is heavy in technology. When money rotates from tech into defensive companies such as consumer staples, the two indexes can move in opposite directions on the same day.

### What does the VIX measure?

The Cboe Volatility Index uses S&P 500 option prices to estimate how much volatility investors expect over the next 30 days. A rising VIX means options protection is getting more expensive. It does not predict whether stocks will rise or fall.

### Why do Treasury yields matter for US stocks?

Treasury yields set a benchmark for borrowing costs and for the return investors can earn without stock-market risk. Falling yields can support rate-sensitive sectors, while sharp moves often signal shifts in growth, inflation or Federal Reserve expectations.
