Source: UPI, citing exchange data. An early AP report gave a KOSPI close of 5,539.05; we use the figure on which UPI, KED Global and Capp Notes agree.

The index opened 0.6% lower and briefly fell below 5,500\. It closed about 37% below its record close of 8,864.24 in June, as reported by SBS.

## What drove it

### AI profitability doubts and memory chips

UPI said investors questioned whether major AI companies can earn enough to justify their heavy capital spending. That worry hits Korea hard because so much of the KOSPI's weight sits in two memory makers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Newsquawk also pointed to reports that US tech firms were pressing for lower memory-chip prices. Notably, Korean chip stocks fell even though the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 1.61% on Monday.

### Global yields and politics abroad

UPI and KED Global cited the US 10-year Treasury yield above 5.1% and higher European bond yields linked to political turmoil in France and protests in Italy. KED Global also mentioned uncertainty ahead of the US midterm elections. Higher global yields reduce the appeal of riskier assets.

### The won and positioning

The won firmed against the dollar, and UPI noted concern that a stronger currency could reduce exporters' earnings in won terms. Positioning also mattered. KED Global reported that retail margin debt hit a three-month high in mid-October, and the KOSPI's forward price-to-earnings ratio fell to a 26-year low after the October 15 rout, when the index dropped 7.6%. **Analysis:** heavy retail borrowing can make falls sharper if lenders call in loans.

## Political & policy watch

### President Lee's comments

On October 19, President Lee Jae Myung said a correction was inevitable after the market's rapid rise, and that Korean stocks remain "very undervalued," KED Global and Bloomberg reported. "What remains is a lack of trust in the market," he said, pointing to governance concerns. He said he would receive a full briefing and take necessary measures; none had been announced by the October 20 close. Separately, Seoul Economic Daily reported on October 19 that Lee had ruled out easing mortgage rules.

### Bank of Korea

The BoK raised rates at consecutive meetings in July and August. In a Seoul Economic Daily survey published on October 18, 19 of 20 experts expected a hold at the October 22 meeting, and 18 expected a hike in November. Most named core inflation, which is approaching 3%, as the key variable. One economist quoted by the paper said the bank might hold partly to support share prices.

### Fiscal policy and trade

On trade, the US–Korea deal reached in late 2025 capped US Section 232 tariffs on Korean autos and some other goods at 15%, and Korea committed $350 billion to US strategic industries, according to the Congressional Research Service. Terms for chips remain less clear in published summaries.

## What it means

**Analysis.** Korea has become the region's most sensitive gauge of sentiment about AI hardware. When doubts rise about AI returns, foreign and institutional investors cut exposure to Samsung and SK Hynix first, and retail investors absorb the selling. Policy support from the president or the central bank can steady sentiment, but it does not change the earnings outlook for memory chips. Wednesday's session was under way when this was written: Bloomingbit reported the KOSPI up 1.96% at 5,661.72 at 9:04 a.m., with foreigners net buyers early on, and KED Global reported a rise of over 3% later in the morning. Those are intraday readings, not closes. For what counts as a correction or a bear market, see [bear market vs correction](https://bullquill.com/market-correction-vs-bear-market/).

## What to watch next

- **October 21, after the US close:** results from Meta, Tesla, Lam Research and Texas Instruments, relevant for memory demand.
- **October 22:** Bank of Korea rate decision.
- **End of October:** third-quarter GDP, which economists surveyed by Seoul Economic Daily expect to show quarterly growth above 1%.
- **October 27–28:** US Federal Reserve meeting.
- **November 3:** US midterm elections.
- **Ongoing:** full third-quarter results from SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, on dates set by each company, and any measures announced after President Lee's briefing.

## Risk checklist for readers

- **Concentration risk.** When two companies carry a large share of an index, the index behaves more like a sector bet than a broad market.
- **Leverage amplifies moves.** High margin debt can turn a decline into forced selling. Margin data are published with a lag.
- **Flows by investor type.** Foreign, institutional and retail flows often diverge. Daily figures are provisional.
- **Currency effects cut both ways.** A stronger won raises returns for foreign holders in dollar terms but can hurt exporters' reported earnings.
- **Statements are not policies.** Presidential remarks and survey forecasts are not decisions. Wait for published measures and official announcements.
