The Indonesian rupiah is trading weak on Tuesday, Oct 27, 2026, with USD/IDR at about 18,140 in early Jakarta trade, close to the rupiah record low of 18,190 per dollar cited by Reuters, as MSCI downgrade fears and foreign outflows weigh.

## What happened to the rupiah today

The rupiah opened at Rp18,139 per dollar at 08:45 WIB (01:45 UTC), slightly weaker than Monday's close of Rp18,135, [Infobanknews reported](https://infobanknews.com/rupiah-terus-melemah-dolar-as-kini-sudah-di-level-rp18-139?ref=bullquill.com). CNN Indonesia had reported the Monday close at [Rp18,135 per dollar](https://www.cnnindonesia.com/ekonomi/20261026154949-78-1419780/rupiah-ditutup-melemah-ke-rp18135-per-dolar-as-sore-ini?ref=bullquill.com), down from Rp18,080 in the previous session.

In a Reuters report carried by [Business Recorder](https://brecorder.com/news/40446065/indonesia-rupiah-hovers-near-record-low?ref=bullquill.com), the currency had weakened to 18,125 per dollar and was hovering near its record low of 18,190\. Reuters said the rupiah has lost about 8% this year, and that Indonesian stocks fell more than 1%.

Yahoo Finance's delayed quote showed USD/IDR at 18,115 at 03:30 UTC, up 0.03% from a previous close of 18,110\. Its 52-week range runs from 15,636.2 to 18,222.

## What we know about the cause

Reuters said investors were weighing MSCI's warning that Indonesian equities could be downgraded to "standalone" market status, a move that could trigger equity outflows. Fesa Wibawa, an investment manager at Aberdeen Investments, said in the Reuters report that uncertainty over the outcome of the MSCI review and the size of any outflows could keep the rupiah under pressure in the near term, despite what he called "Indonesia's resilient sovereign-credit fundamentals."

Lukman Leong, a currency analyst at Doo Financial Futures, also pointed to foreign selling, saying outflows of foreign money from the domestic stock market were still weighing on the rupiah, according to Infobanknews. He also cited Middle East tensions, including a possible US strike on Iran, and expected a Rp18,100 to Rp18,200 range for the day.

Ibrahim Assuaibi, another analyst quoted by CNN Indonesia, pointed to higher oil prices. Indonesia is a net oil importer, and he said its crude price (ICP) reached $91.9 a barrel at the end of September, above the 2026 budget assumption of $70\. That raises energy import costs and subsidy spending.

## What we don't know yet

A quote feed tracked by Bullquill showed USD/IDR rising about 0.8% within 30 minutes around 03:30 UTC. Onshore prices did not show a move of that size: they changed by only a few points between Monday's close and Tuesday morning, and Yahoo listed an unusually low opening print of 17,978\. The jump most likely reflects irregular quotes in that feed rather than a sudden sell-off. No single new trigger for a sharp intraday move has been confirmed.

It is also not yet clear when MSCI will decide, or how large any index-related outflows would be. On Monday, Bank Indonesia's governor said the central bank remains active in the foreign-exchange market to maintain orderly supply and demand, according to Reuters.

## Background: MSCI, outflows and Bank Indonesia

MSCI's proposal to move Indonesia from Emerging Market to Standalone status triggered a steep one-day fall in the IHSG on Oct 16, as covered in our [analysis of Indonesia's capital flows after the MSCI shock](https://bullquill.com/indonesia-capital-flows-msci-standalone-oct-2026/). Foreign investors have kept selling shares since then (see [IHSG foreign selling and the MSCI trend](https://bullquill.com/ihsg-foreign-selling-msci-trend/)), and the index slid again on Monday, as reported in [IHSG falls 1.2% in Monday morning trade](https://bullquill.com/ihsg-falls-1-percent-monday-morning-selloff/).

Bank Indonesia kept its policy rate unchanged at its October meeting; see [Bank Indonesia holds the BI-Rate](https://bullquill.com/bank-indonesia-holds-bi-rate-october-surprise/). Reuters noted that the Philippine peso also hit a record low on Tuesday and, like the rupiah, has fallen about 8% this year. That makes the two currencies among the weakest in the region.

## What it means

For now, the rupiah is moving slowly toward its record low rather than collapsing. Traders are watching three things: any word on the MSCI review, foreign flows in Jakarta stocks, and whether Bank Indonesia steps up intervention if the record low is tested. Oil prices and Middle East headlines remain a secondary risk because Indonesia imports oil. A weaker rupiah raises the cost of imports and of dollar debt for Indonesian companies, and it adds pressure on the central bank's policy choices.
