## Key takeaways

- Elon Musk has reportedly invested about $1 billion in Skydance, the company formed when Paramount Skydance completed its roughly $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery on Oct. 6\. Semafor reported it first, and CNBC followed, citing a person familiar with the matter.
- Neither Skydance nor Musk has confirmed the investment. The size of any stake, the share price paid and whether Musk invested personally or through one of his companies have not been disclosed.
- The money would be new equity for a company that took on heavy debt to finance the deal. Paramount said in March that the merger would create about $79 billion in net debt, and Fitch and S&P have both cut the company deeper into junk territory.
- The Ellison–Musk relationship goes back years. Larry Ellison committed $1 billion to Musk's 2022 Twitter takeover, and his son David Ellison now runs Skydance.

## What has been reported about Elon Musk's Skydance investment

Elon Musk has put roughly $1 billion into Skydance, the owner of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, according to an exclusive Semafor report published on Oct. 22, 2026\. Semafor described it as an equity investment; neither Skydance nor Musk has confirmed it.

Later the same day, CNBC reported a similar figure, citing one person familiar with the matter. Reuters and TechCrunch then carried the CNBC and Semafor reports. Reuters said representatives for Skydance and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment. TechCrunch said Skydance did not immediately respond either.

The reports describe the money as a much-needed boost for a company trying to cut costs and lift its share price. Skydance's leadership has said it is targeting about $6 billion in cost savings from combining the two studios, according to CBS News.

The reported investment follows earlier talks. In September, Semafor reported that Paramount was considering an equity injection from Musk as David Ellison put together a group of equity investors. That was a report of talks. The Oct. 22 reports are the first to describe money actually committed.

## Confirmed vs. reported: what we know and what we don't

Until Skydance or Musk comments, or the investment appears in a regulatory filing, the details rest on anonymous sourcing. Here is where things stand as of Oct. 22:

## Why the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery deal needs more equity

The answer lies mostly in the debt. Paramount won the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery after a contest with Netflix. It paid Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders roughly $31 per share in cash, CBS News reported. A takeover of that size could not be paid for with cash on hand.

On March 2, Paramount said the combined company would have about $79 billion in net debt, according to Sherwood News. Fitch cut the company to junk that week, and S&P Global moved its outlook to negative. S&P said the deal would push leverage "well above" its 4.25x downgrade threshold.

The pressure has continued since. IBTimes UK, citing ratings-agency actions and Debtwire analysis, reported that S&P cut Skydance's issuer rating to BB from BB+ on Sept. 24\. Fitch made the same cut around the deal's completion, citing higher leverage and integration risk. Debtwire estimated net debt at closing of about $84.3 billion. It also said the roughly $52 billion financing package included about $30 billion of investment-grade bonds, $12.4 billion of high-yield bonds and about $9.5 billion of loans.

Equity can be raised without adding interest costs, which is what makes it valuable here. Each extra dollar of equity reduces how much the company has to borrow, or gives it room to pay down debt.

| Shinsegae Group | $1 billion | Bloomberg via The Star, Oct. 9, 2026 |

Measured against those amounts, Musk's reported $1 billion is small. It is about 2% of the $47 billion equity raise and about 1% of the reported debt. Its value to Skydance may lie as much in the signal it sends as in the cash. Shares have been under pressure since the deal closed. Bloomberg reported a fall of about 9% in the first days of trading. IBTimes UK reported a close of $7.06 on Oct. 14, a day when a warrant distribution also changed the reference price.

## How the Ellison–Musk relationship fits

The financial ties between the Ellisons and Musk run both ways. In 2022, Oracle founder Larry Ellison committed $1 billion in equity to Musk's purchase of Twitter, now X. Reuters and Semafor both noted this on Oct. 22\. Larry Ellison also invested in Tesla in 2018 and sat on its board for several years.

In a 2018 interview cited by Reuters, Larry Ellison said: "I'm very close friends with Elon Musk." Musk has publicly praised the Ellisons and Skydance. Semafor said that praise has fed speculation about a wider partnership involving his Starlink satellite network, but no such deal has been reported as agreed.

Semafor also reported that media investor John Malone, speaking about a possible deal between Skydance and SpaceX, said: "I think there's a deal coming there." That is Malone's view and not a confirmed transaction. Bullquill's earlier coverage of [what Musk has confirmed about Tesla and SpaceX](https://bullquill.com/tesla-spacex-merger-what-musk-confirmed/) and [SpaceX's AI and Starlink revenue](https://bullquill.com/spacex-q3-ai-revenue-overtakes-starlink/) explains why investors watch how Musk moves money between his companies.

## Regulatory and governance questions

The takeover has already been through regulatory review. It cleared its final legal hurdle when Paramount settled a lawsuit brought by 12 state attorneys general and a separate suit from the Writers Guild of America, CBS News reported. The settlement commits the company to produce 30 films in each of the first two years and not to sell the Paramount or Warner Bros. Los Angeles studio lots for five years. It also sets up an editorial board meant to protect the "editorial independence" of CNN and CBS. Reuters reported that President Trump had praised the merger.

A minority equity investment would not normally need another merger review. Still, it raises several open questions:

- **Disclosure.** Under SEC rules summarized on Investor.gov, anyone who gains beneficial ownership of more than 5% of a registered *voting* class of equity must file a Schedule 13D. Reports say the Ellison family and RedBird control all of Skydance's voting Class A shares. The class Musk bought into, if any, has not been reported, so it is unclear whether a public filing will follow.
- **Voting control.** If Musk bought the same Class B stock that other investors received, he would add capital without gaining voting control. That has not been confirmed.
- **News independence.** Skydance owns CBS News and CNN, and Musk owns the social network X and is politically active. Critics may ask whether the settlement's editorial-independence safeguards cover a prominent outside shareholder. Skydance has not commented.
- **Personal or corporate money.** If one of Musk's companies made the investment rather than Musk himself, that company's own shareholders and disclosure rules come into play. Reuters said this is not yet known.

## What it means

For Skydance, the reported investment adds to its equity cushion at a time when credit markets are watching its leverage closely. Fitch's base case, as described in news coverage of its rating action, depends on the company achieving most of its planned $6 billion in cost savings. Bond prices, rating actions and the company's first combined earnings report will show whether that is happening. They will matter more than any single investor.

For media investors, the episode is another example of private, relationship-driven capital propping up a highly leveraged deal. Bullquill has followed the wider streaming fight in [Netflix's third-quarter results](https://bullquill.com/netflix-q3-2026-results-margin-guidance/). We have also tracked the rising cost of credit protection in [Meta's credit default swaps](https://bullquill.com/meta-credit-default-swaps-record-ai-debt/).

Until Skydance or Musk confirms the investment, the $1 billion figure, its structure and the size of any stake should be treated as reported rather than established. A securities filing or a company statement would settle these questions.

## Frequently asked questions
