## What Sony has confirmed

Sony's Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition costs ¥55,000 including tax and launches in Japan on Thursday, November 19, 2026\. It is a Japanese-only model: the system language must be Japanese and the PlayStation account region must be set to Japan.

On specifications, Sony says it matches the existing Digital Edition. The console has an 825 GB custom SSD, though part of that space is reserved for the system, so less is available for games. It uses an eight-core AMD Zen 2 processor, an AMD RDNA-based GPU rated at 10 teraflops and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. The box contains the console, a DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal stand feet, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable and printed materials. Astro's Playroom comes preinstalled, although Sony notes that a system update and an internet connection may be needed.

The console has no disc drive, so physical games need the separately sold Midnight Black Disc Drive, which also requires an internet connection to pair with the console. Sony's listing also mentions a campaign running until March 31, 2027 that extends the standard one-year manufacturer warranty to two years for eligible purchases. Buyers must apply separately to join it.

At the time of its October 13 report, Dexerto converted ¥55,000 to roughly $347\. That figure moves with the exchange rate, and it does not cover shipping, import duties or local taxes for anyone buying from abroad.

## Why the region lock matters

The Midnight Black console follows a Japanese-only Digital Edition in the standard white finish. Sony launched that model in Japan on November 21, 2025, also at ¥55,000\. GIGAZINE reported at the time that the regular Digital Edition was priced at ¥72,980 in Japan. That made the Japan-only version a much cheaper way into the platform for domestic players, and it carried the same restrictions: Japanese as the system language, a Japan-region account, and digital games bought from the Japanese PlayStation Store.

Those limits explain why the new colourway is not a simple bargain for international buyers. The console only works with an account whose country or region is set to Japan. In practice, that means purchases go through the Japanese PlayStation Store, with Japanese pricing and Japanese-language menus. Players outside Japan who already own games on a PlayStation account from another region should not expect to use this console as their everyday machine for that library. Sony's listing does not say the restriction can be lifted later.

Warranty and support are another open question. The two-year warranty campaign described on the PlayStation Blog is a Japanese promotion, and Sony has not said how it would treat units used or repaired abroad.

## The launch date and the GTA VI connection

The November 19 launch falls on the same day as Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games confirmed that date in a Newswire post when it delayed the game from its earlier target. Dexerto pointed out that the two launches line up. Sony has not said whether the timing is deliberate, but it does put a new hardware option on Japanese shelves on one of the biggest release days of the year.

Sony's Japanese listing also points to a wider change in how PlayStation games will be sold. It states that games first released from January 2028 onward will be download-only, while disc-based games released before then will still work. Dexerto has reported this as Sony stopping production of physical discs for new PlayStation games from 2028\. For a digital-only console, that makes the separately sold disc drive mainly a way to play older physical games.

## What is still unknown

- **A global release.** Sony has made no announcement about selling the Midnight Black Digital Edition in North America, Europe or other regions. Video Games Chronicle described it as confirmed only for Japan so far, and Inven Global's coverage likewise cited no statement from Sony about other markets.
- **Stock levels and retailers.** Sony says preorders are opening in stages at participating retailers and online stores in Japan, but it has not published a list of retailers or any information on how many units are available.
- **Purchase limits.** Sony's announcement does not say whether retailers will limit how many units each customer can buy or restrict sales to residents of Japan. Individual stores may set their own rules.
- **Other accessories.** Inven Global noted that a vertical stand appears in Sony's product images but is sold separately. Sony's announcement does not give a price for it.

## What it means

For players in Japan, the Midnight Black model offers a cheaper, all-black Digital Edition, with an optional matching disc drive, timed for a busy launch window. For readers elsewhere, the answer to "can I buy it?" is a qualified one for now. Importing a unit may be possible through retailers that ship abroad, but the console is designed for Japanese-language use with a Japan-region account. Sony has not committed to a version for other markets. Anyone weighing an import should read Sony's listed restrictions carefully and check whether a local release is announced before November 19.
