Kim Jong Un's China visit began on Saturday, October 24, when he crossed the new Yalu River bridge into the border city of Dandong, South Korean officials said. Chinese Premier Li Qiang reportedly met him there. Beijing and Pyongyang have not confirmed the trip.

## Kim Jong Un China visit: what happened in Dandong

Reports of the trip were published in South Korean media by about 06:30 UTC (3:30 p.m. Korea time) on Saturday. Yonhap, citing a government source, said Kim had reached Dandong, in China's Liaoning province, by crossing the bridge over the Yalu River (the Amnok River in Korean). Korea JoongAng Daily reported that South Korea's Unification Ministry said Kim "arrived in Dandong, Liaoning Province, via the new Yalu River bridge." Reuters and AFP carried the same account, citing unnamed South Korean officials.

According to Reuters, a South Korean official said Premier Li Qiang met Kim in Dandong. Youn Kun-young, a lawmaker from South Korea's ruling Democratic Party, told reporters that Li received Kim and that the North Korean leader was expected to return home the same day. Youn described the trip as "expected to be very short," according to The Korea Times.

Before the reports, Japan's Kyodo News, citing diplomatic sources, said strict traffic restrictions had been imposed in parts of Dandong, which led to speculation that a senior North Korean figure was arriving, according to Korea JoongAng Daily.

Still unknown: the agenda of the talks, who else travelled with Kim, whether any agreements were signed, and whether he will travel further into China. A ruling-party source told Yonhap that what matters is whom Kim meets in China, and that this "remains to be seen."

North Korean state media had not reported the trip at the time of writing. On Saturday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) instead reported that Kim had presided over a two-day military meeting in Pyongyang on Wednesday and Thursday, Korea JoongAng Daily said. North Korea has in the past announced Kim's foreign trips only after they ended.

The bridge is expected to carry two-way traffic around the clock, including container shipments and heavy cargo trucks, Al Jazeera reported. Lu Chao, an expert at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, told Reuters that the opening "has resolved a major bottleneck in China-North Korea trade logistics," and that bilateral trade is likely to grow further.

## Background: Kim, Beijing and the Korean War anniversary

Kim's last known visit to China was in September 2025, when he attended the 80th Victory Day commemorations in Beijing and held a summit with President Xi Jinping. Xi made a state visit to North Korea in June 2026, according to Reuters. North Korea and China mark October 25 as the anniversary of Chinese troops entering the Korean War, and South Korean sources linked the timing of the trip to that date.

China is North Korea's largest trading partner and its main economic and diplomatic backer. Analysts quoted by Reuters say Pyongyang has moved closer to Moscow since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has reduced its reliance on Beijing. Bullquill has covered other recent tensions on the peninsula, including [North Korea's restart of border propaganda broadcasts](https://bullquill.com/north-korea-restarts-border-propaganda-broadcasts/).

The public appearance also undercuts rumours about Kim's health that had circulated on overseas social media. South Korea's National Intelligence Service reportedly told lawmakers on Friday that the rumours were unfounded, according to Korea JoongAng Daily.

## What it means

A personal crossing on the new bridge, a week after it opened, signals that both governments want to show closer economic ties. Christopher Green, a Korea specialist at Leiden University, told Reuters it was too early to judge Kim's intentions, adding that a further Xi-Kim summit is probably coming but "nothing is certain at this stage."

The visit also matters for Washington. China hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen next month, and US President Donald Trump is expected to attend. Trump has said he wants to restart talks with Kim, but Pyongyang has not responded, and US and South Korean officials see fading chances of a meeting this year, Reuters reported. Chinese markets have been under separate pressure this week; see the [China and Hong Kong stocks brief](https://bullquill.com/china-hong-kong-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-23/).

Bullquill will update this report if Beijing or Pyongyang confirms the visit or releases details of the talks.
