## Key takeaways

- The first full reviews of Apple's iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, were published on 21 October 2026, two days before the device goes on sale on Friday, 23 October.
- Reviewers broadly agree that the crease on the 7.6-inch inner screen is hard to see head-on but can still be felt, and that the hinge is among the best on any foldable.
- The main points of disagreement are battery life, heat under heavy use, and how far Apple's iPad-style multitasking goes on a phone.
- Weight (254 grams) and the $1,999 starting price are the most common complaints. Apple Pencil support is not available at launch.

The first full iPhone Duo reviews, published on 21 October 2026, broadly agree that the crease on the 7.6-inch inner screen is hard to see head-on and that the hinge is among the best on any foldable. They split on battery life and heat. Since launch, some owners have reported [inner screens cracking along the hinge](https://bullquill.com/iphone-duo-screen-cracking-hinge-reports/).

## What Apple says it built

According to Apple's press release, the Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Both are Super Retina XDR panels with the same aspect ratio. The inner screen has a matte nano-texture finish, which Apple says cuts reflections and makes the crease less visible. It also supports ProMotion and Always On, with up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The phone runs on the A20 Pro chip, the same processor as the iPhone 18 Pro, and its frame is grade 5 titanium. It is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance.

Apple CEO John Ternus called it "the most transformational change to iPhone since the original," according to the release. Apple did not give a weight or thickness in the announcement. TidBITS, which went through the specification sheet, reported a weight of 254 grams, a thickness of 5.2 mm open and 11.3 mm closed.

## The crease: hidden, but not gone

The crease is the point testers agree on most. In his review, Engadget's Sam Rutherford said a small dip can be seen from some angles but mostly disappears when the screen is viewed straight on. Chance Miller of 9to5Mac wrote that "the iPhone Duo's crease isn't visible when you use the device head-on in most lighting conditions," but added that you can feel it with a finger when scrolling. MacRumors made a similar point in its September hands-on: the fold can still be seen in some light, though the outlet judged that Apple did a better job of hiding it than Samsung. The Verge's reviewers, according to published summaries of their review, also found the crease largely hidden by the matte screen but not invisible.

The matte finish has its own critics. PhoneArena's early reaction questioned whether a matte coating suits a phone's main screen. Apple has not published how many open-and-close cycles the hinge is rated for, a gap The National also pointed out.

## Hinge and build

Apple says the hinge has more than 100 components and uses a magnet array to keep the phone shut. Reviewers like the result. Rutherford called it "one of the nicest hinges I've used on any foldable," and noted that it holds its position at many angles. The National's Alvin R Cabral reported no wobble. The one practical complaint comes from 9to5Mac, which said opening the phone takes two hands.

## Weight and size: the most common complaint

At 254 grams, the Duo is heavy for a phone. Engadget said it is more than 25 percent heavier than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and can feel like an anchor in a pocket. 9to5Mac put it at 5 grams more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but said the shorter, wider shape is more comfortable to hold, even if one-handed use becomes tiring over time. Rutherford had already called the device "rather hefty" in his September hands-on.

## Multitasking: a first for iPhone, with limits

The Duo brings Split View, borrowed from the iPad, to the iPhone's inner screen. Testers described it as smooth, but reviewers differ on how far it goes. MacRumors found that the two apps each take exactly half the screen and cannot be resized. Engadget noted that in portrait orientation the screen splits only top and bottom, and that many third-party apps do not yet fill the large display properly. Rutherford wrote that "a lot of apps still need fine-tuning to look their best." 9to5Mac wanted more iPad features such as Slide Over, while The National described dragging photos from one half of the screen into an email on the other. Readers should expect app support to change as developers update their apps.

## Battery and heat: where reviews split

Battery results vary more than anything else in the early reviews. Engadget's video rundown test lasted 28 hours and 48 minutes, about half an hour longer than the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the phone often ended test days with around 40 percent left. 9to5Mac usually had about 20 percent left at the end of a normal day and said the phone runs slightly warmer than the iPhone 18 Pro without slowing down. The Verge's verdict was less positive. According to summaries of its review, one of its two reviewers had to charge the phone at least once a day, the other had about 30 percent left after roughly six and a half hours of screen time, and both found the phone got hot during long camera sessions and in some third-party apps. Our step-by-step guide shows [how to set up iPhone Duo and transfer data](https://bullquill.com/how-to-set-up-iphone-duo-transfer-data/).

## Cameras

The Duo has two 48-megapixel rear cameras and no dedicated telephoto lens. Apple describes its 2x option as "optical-quality," and MacRumors explained that it is a crop from the main sensor. Engadget found the results strong but said the iPhone 18 Pro is still Apple's best camera phone. 9to5Mac rated the main camera close to the iPhone Air's and slightly behind the 18 Pro's. Several testers wanted a longer zoom. A 12MP Center Stage camera sits on the outer screen, and a FaceTime camera is hidden under the inner display. TidBITS reported that the under-display camera records video at 1080p.

## Stylus: not yet

Apple says the USB-C Apple Pencil will work on either display "later this year," so none of the reviews could test it. Engadget's review suggested support could arrive later this month. Apple has not confirmed a date. Rutherford argued that the matte inner screen should suit drawing and note-taking once support arrives.

## Price and availability

The Duo starts at $1,999 in the US, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, according to Apple. MacRumors reported that the 2TB model costs $3,199\. In the UAE, The National listed prices from Dh8,499 to Dh13,599 and reported extended shipping times. Apple says the phone goes on sale on Friday, 23 October, in more than 70 countries and regions, including the US, UK, Canada, China, Japan, Germany, France, Australia and Brazil. A further 28 countries and regions follow on 30 October. Colours are Star White and Night Sky. The phone is now on sale, but [walk-in iPhone Duo stock is limited](https://bullquill.com/iphone-duo-on-sale-stock-delivery-dates/) and new online orders ship in January.

## Moving to a new iPhone: a quick checklist

Anyone switching phones this month can use the move to tidy up their accounts. Passkeys sync through iCloud Keychain, so signing in on the new phone is easier if they are set up beforehand; our guide shows [how to set up passkeys on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac](https://bullquill.com/how-to-set-up-passkeys/). Users of the Arc Search browser app should note that [Arc is shutting down and data should be exported before December 22](https://bullquill.com/arc-browser-shutting-down-what-users-should-do/). Password managers are also changing: [1Password for Agents](https://bullquill.com/1password-ai-agents-login-without-passwords/) now lets approved AI agents sign in to accounts without seeing the password.

## What it means

The early verdicts are largely positive about the hardware and more cautious about the device as a whole. Engadget scored the Duo 8.8 out of 10 and said Apple's first foldable "has been worth the wait." 9to5Mac called it "a glimpse at the future of the iPhone" but said it is not the practical choice for most buyers at $1,999\. The Verge, according to published summaries, called it one of Apple's most interesting products in years and advised most people to wait. The crease, hinge and build have impressed reviewers. Weight, price, the missing telephoto lens and the delayed Pencil support are the drawbacks they mention most. Battery life and heat depend on the tester, so the next few weeks of owner reports will matter. Third-party app support for the larger screen is also an open question until developers update their apps.
