## What drove it

### Oil fell on US-Iran diplomacy

Oil prices matter for Indian stocks because crude costs feed into inflation, the rupee and company margins. On Monday, front-month Brent futures (the January contract) fell 7.6% to $104.77 and WTI dropped 7.4% to $96.46, CNBC reported. That followed comments from President Donald Trump that Iran wants to "make a deal," and from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Tehran was seeking to resolve issues through dialogue. HDFC Sky reported Brent at $102.71 in early trade on Wednesday, about 13% below the previous Friday's six-month high of $118\. By Thursday afternoon, Brent futures were at $95.93, according to the PTI report.

### Foreign investors turned buyers

Net buying by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) reversed two months of heavy selling. HDFC Sky reported Rs 6,837 crore of FPI net buying on Tuesday, citing provisional exchange data. PTI reported Rs 7,284.03 crore on Wednesday. On Thursday the figure reached Rs 14,974.68 crore, ETV Bharat reported, while domestic institutions were net sellers of Rs 10,444.54 crore, according to DSIJ. Business Today, citing NSDL data, reported that FPIs had put Rs 14,863 crore into Indian equities in November by Thursday morning, after net outflows of Rs 34,843 crore in October and Rs 35,861 crore in September.

### US midterms and Wall Street swings

Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate in the Nov 3 midterm elections, Outlook Money reported. Wall Street rallied on Nov 4: the S&P 500 rose 1.58%, according to Yahoo Finance data. It then reversed on Thursday, Nov 5, when the Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52% and the S&P 500 fell 4.36%, according to the same data. Indian benchmarks still rose on Friday, and DSIJ noted that domestic markets held up despite weak global cues. That contrasts with Tokyo, where the [Nikkei 225 lost 9.25% in the week](https://bullquill.com/japan-stocks-weekly-brief-2026-11-06/).

### Earnings

Second-quarter results also supported large caps. Business Today reported that the 35 Nifty companies that had reported by Nov 5 grew profits 22% from a year earlier, against a 20% estimate from Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments said in comments carried in The Tribune's Nov 3 ANI report that resilient Q2 earnings were supporting confidence, alongside lower crude and Treasury yields.

### Rupee

The rupee strengthened over the week. It settled at a provisional 94.93 per dollar on Oct 30 and at 94.46 on Thursday, Nov 5, according to PTI reports carried by HDFC Sky and Telangana Today. The FBIL reference rate on the Reserve Bank of India website was 94.1402 per dollar at 1:00 pm IST (07:30 UTC) on Friday, Nov 6\. The onshore Friday close had not been published when this brief was written.

## Political & policy watch

- **US-Iran talks:** Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a deal was possible if Washington "demonstrates goodwill," CNBC reported, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump prefers diplomacy. No agreement had been announced by Friday. HDFC Sky reported that Trump had not ruled out resuming combat after the elections.
- **US Congress:** Master Capital Services' Ravi Singh told Outlook Money that a shift in congressional control could curb Trump's trade agenda, but the effect on India would depend on how US trade policy evolves.
- **RBI policy:** The RBI website showed the policy repo rate at 5.50%. Marketholidays.in reported that the Monetary Policy Committee raised the rate by 25 basis points on Oct 7 and changed its stance to "calibrated tightening."
- **Inflation:** India's retail inflation was 5.54% in September, up from 4.83% in August, Maarg reported, citing the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

## What to watch next

- **Sunday, Nov 8:** Diwali Muhurat trading. Paytm Money, citing a BSE circular dated Oct 19, lists continuous trading from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm IST (08:50–10:00 UTC).

## Risk checklist for readers

- Large weekly moves, such as the Nifty 50's 8.58% gain this week, can reverse quickly when the news behind them changes, for example if US-Iran talks break down.
- Oil is a major swing factor for India. Check which Brent contract and which session a quoted price refers to before comparing figures.
- Daily FII/DII figures are provisional. Some outlets report exchange-only data and others include primary-market deals, so totals for the same day can differ.
- Closing levels can differ between data providers, as with the Sensex this week. Check NSE and BSE for official closes.
- Large-cap gains this week were not matched by mid- and small-cap indices. A rising Nifty 50 does not mean most stocks are rising.
- For overseas investors, rupee moves change returns measured in dollars, and holiday-shortened weeks can thin trading.
