## Hurricane Vance path and tracker: where the storm is now

Hurricane Vance path update: the storm is moving north-northwest at 6 mph, about 440 miles (710 km) south-southwest of Acapulco. At 09:00 UTC on 23 October it had 85 mph winds, and the NHC forecasts Category 3 strength within about 24 to 36 hours.

Vance had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts, and a minimum central pressure of 982 mb. It was moving north-northwest at 6 mph (9 km/h). Hurricane-force winds extended up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 205 miles (335 km), according to the advisory.

## What happened

Vance formed as a tropical storm on Wednesday, 21 October. The Associated Press reported at the time that it was about 520 miles (835 km) south of Acapulco, with winds near 40 mph, and posed no threat to land. Over the following two days the storm organised steadily. In Discussion 8, issued at 09:00 UTC on 23 October, NHC forecasters raised the intensity to 75 knots (85 mph), citing satellite estimates and a better-organised inner core.

At 09:34 UTC the Associated Press reported on X that Vance had become a hurricane off the coast of Mexico. AccuWeather also reported that Vance became a hurricane early on Friday and expected it to reach major-hurricane strength. AP said the storm could reach Category 4\. The NHC's official forecast, issued at 09:00 UTC, puts the peak at 100 knots (115 mph), which is Category 3.

According to the NHC, warm water and low wind shear should support rapid strengthening for about the next 24 hours. After that, the storm is expected to move over cooler water, partly cooled by upwelling from earlier tropical cyclones, and wind shear should increase. Forecasters expect those conditions to cause gradual weakening.

On the track, the NHC said model guidance agrees reasonably well for about the first 60 hours. After that the steering currents weaken and the models spread apart, so confidence is lower than normal. The forecast positions keep Vance over the ocean through 28 October, edging slowly north-northwest. The five-day uncertainty cone on the NHC's track graphic reaches toward the coast of southwestern Mexico in its later days. The cone shows where the center will probably travel, not how large the storm is, and hazards can occur outside it.

## What we know and what we don't know yet

### What we know

- Vance is a Category 1 hurricane with 85 mph winds as of 09:00 UTC on 23 October (NHC).
- The NHC forecasts it to become a major hurricane by tonight, with a peak of 115 mph.
- No coastal watches or warnings are in effect for Mexico.
- Swells are expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents along southern and southwestern Mexico from this weekend.

### What we don't know yet

- Whether Vance's center will approach or reach the Mexican coast. Track confidence beyond about 60 hours is lower than normal, according to the NHC.
- How strong Vance will be if it does approach land, since the NHC expects weakening over cooler water later in the forecast period.
- Whether Mexican authorities will issue watches or warnings. None had been issued as of Advisory 8.

## Background

The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November. In its headline, AccuWeather said Vance is expected to become the 11th major eastern Pacific hurricane of the 2026 season. With steering currents expected to weaken later in the forecast, the long-range track is the main open question. ## What it means

For now, Vance's most direct effect on Mexico is dangerous ocean conditions. Swells are expected to reach beaches in southern and southwestern Mexico this weekend. People along Mexico's Pacific coast should follow the NHC and Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) for updates, and should follow any advice from local civil protection authorities about beaches and boating.

Because confidence in the track is low after 60 hours, forecasts for early next week could change a lot. NHC advisories are issued every six hours. The next one, Advisory 9, was due at 15:00 UTC (9 a.m. CST) on 23 October. This article reflects NHC data as of 09:00 UTC on 23 October 2026.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where is Hurricane Vance now?

At 09:00 UTC on 23 October 2026, the NHC placed Vance near 10.9°N, 102.1°W, about 440 miles (710 km) south-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, moving north-northwest at 6 mph.

### How strong will Hurricane Vance get?

The NHC forecasts rapid intensification to a peak of 100 knots (115 mph), a Category 3 major hurricane, within about 24 to 36 hours. It then expects gradual weakening over cooler water.

### Will Hurricane Vance hit Mexico?

That is not yet known. No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, and the NHC says track confidence after about 60 hours is lower than normal. Swells are expected to cause dangerous surf and rip currents in southern and southwestern Mexico.

### Where can I track Hurricane Vance?

The National Hurricane Center publishes advisories, forecast discussions and the forecast cone every six hours at nhc.noaa.gov. Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) issues national warnings.
