## Key takeaways

- Google's privacy policy, effective October 16, 2026, adds an exception to its 2021 pledge not to personalize ads with content from Gmail, Drive or Google Photos.
- The exception covers people who choose to make that data available to other Google services that support personalized ads, in practice users who connect Gmail or Photos to Search through Personal Intelligence.
- Google says ads will not be based "directly" on your inbox or photo library, but summaries, excerpts and inferences drawn from them may be used to show you ads.
- Personal Intelligence is opt-in. You can disconnect Gmail and Photos in Search Services Personalization, but Search Services History is not deleted automatically when you do.

Google now lets Search use what it learns from a connected Gmail inbox or Google Photos library to personalize content, including ads. The Google Gmail ads privacy policy change, effective October 16, 2026, applies only to people who have switched on Personal Intelligence.

The update drew wider attention this week after coverage by The Verge and discussion on Hacker News. Below is the exact wording that changed, who it applies to, what Google says it will not do, and the settings that control it.

## Google Gmail ads privacy policy: what changed on October 16

Since a July 2021 revision, Google's privacy policy had carried a short, unconditional promise about three of its most personal products. A version-by-version comparison of the policy published by Conduct Atlas, which tracks policy changes, shows that the sentence was rewritten between the version effective October 1, 2026 and the one effective October 16, 2026\. According to PPC Land's review of the policy archive, the promise had survived 17 earlier versions unchanged.

| Topic | Before (effective Oct 1, 2026) | After (effective Oct 16, 2026) |
| -------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Gmail, Drive and Photos | "We don't show you personalized ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail, or Photos." | The same promise, now followed by "unless you choose to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads." |
| Cross-service access | No equivalent sentence | Users may allow services such as Search or Gemini Apps to access data from Google Photos and Workspace apps like Gmail and Drive for a more personalized experience. |
| Search example | "Mountain bikes" search leading to sports-equipment ads on YouTube | "Search may process some of the data that you allow Search to access to personalize content, including ads." |
| Basis for personalized ads | Interests and activity across Google services | Interests, activity, "or personalized content from Google services" |
| Personal Intelligence | Not mentioned | Named in the "personalize content" key term; a hotel-booking email is given as an example of data Search may use to suggest nearby activities |

The main promise is still in the policy. What is new is the "unless" clause, and the separate statement that Search may use data you let it access to personalize ads.

## Who the change applies to

The exception only matters if you have connected your Google apps to Search through Personal Intelligence. Google launched the feature in AI Mode on January 22, 2026 as a Labs experiment for paying AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US. Several outlets, including Thurrott and Android Authority, reported that it was opened to free US accounts in March.

Google's current Search Help page lists these conditions for connecting apps:

- You must be 18 or older and signed in to a personal Google Account. Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts were excluded from the original launch.
- Personalized Recommendations must be turned on in Search Services Personalization.
- For Gmail context, the Gmail setting "Smart features in other Google products" must be on.
- Calendar connections are limited to US English, and Google Photos connections are not available in every region.

If you never connected Gmail or Photos, the October 16 wording does not change how Google uses your inbox or photo library for ads. Connecting is off by default. In its January announcement, Google said connecting Gmail and Google Photos is "strictly opt-in."

## What Google says it will and will not do

Google's Search Help page for connected apps sets out the limits in plain terms:

- **No direct use of the inbox or library:** "Ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library."
- **Derived data can be used:** Search may use summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected sources, and Google says the same information may be used to show you ads.
- **No advertiser access:** Advertisers do not get access to your Gmail inbox or Google Photos.
- **Sensitive categories excluded:** Google says it does not personalize ads using sensitive categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation or health.
- **Model training:** Search does not train generative AI models directly on your inbox or Photos imagery, but summaries, excerpts, generated media and inferences from connected content may be used for training.
- **Human review:** A subset of connected-app data processed by AI Mode is seen by human reviewers, including trained service providers. Google says photos and videos are not viewed except to address abuse or harm, or when you send feedback.

Ads are already appearing in this context. A Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land that the company "is starting to test ads in AI Mode in Search for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence," according to Search Engine Roundtable. In March, Google had said there were no ads for people who connect their apps with AI Mode.

Critics focus on the word "directly." Techlicious noted that if an email or file is short or highly relevant, a summary of it may effectively be the whole item. Earlier this year, Fast Company reported that Google's statements about Gmail and ads did not rule out future changes. It quoted Lena Cohen, a staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, criticizing the lack of clarity.

## How to check or turn it off

These steps use the setting names on Google's own help pages. Labels can vary slightly by device and region.

1. **Disconnect Gmail and Photos from Search.** In your Google Account, open Search Services Personalization. Under Additional Personal Intelligence, choose Connected Content Apps and disconnect Google Workspace and Google Photos.
2. **Turn off Personalized Recommendations** on the same page if you want Search to stop personalizing results from your data.
3. **Check the Gmail switch.** In Gmail, go to Settings, See all settings, General, Google Workspace smart features, then Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Turn off "Smart features in other Google products."
4. **Review ad personalization in My Ad Center.** At myadcenter.google.com you can turn personalized ads off or limit which activity is used for ads. Google says you will still see ads, but they may be less relevant.
5. **Delete what was already collected.** Google's help page says disconnecting an app does not delete data from your Search Services History. Review and delete that history at activity.google.com.

Step 4 on its own is not enough. Techlicious pointed out that turning off personalized ads in My Ad Center does not necessarily stop connected-app data from being used for AI personalization and model improvement. Steps 1 and 5 cover those uses.

## What it means

For most Google users, nothing changes today, because Personal Intelligence is off unless you turn it on. For people who have connected Gmail or Photos to AI Mode, the line has moved. The 2021 promise was absolute. The October 16 version makes it conditional on your settings, and Google's help page confirms that derived information from those apps can feed ads.

For Google, the change fits a broader plan to make AI Mode both more personal and commercially viable. Google has already brought Personal Intelligence to [Gemini on Android Auto](https://bullquill.com/gemini-in-cars-personalized-assistant-explained/), and investors are watching how Alphabet turns its heavy AI spending into revenue, as covered in our report on [Alphabet's stock sliding into a bear market](https://bullquill.com/alphabet-stock-bear-market-ai-spending/).

For readers, the practical step is a short settings check. If you want the convenience of Personal Intelligence, keep the connection and use My Ad Center to limit ad personalization. If you do not, disconnect the apps and clear Search Services History. It is also a good moment to tighten other account protections, for example by [setting up passkeys on your Google Account](https://bullquill.com/how-to-set-up-passkeys/).

Several questions remain open. Google has not said how many users have connected their apps, which markets the AI Mode ad test covers, or whether the same approach will extend to Gemini Apps, which the new policy wording also names.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Google use my Gmail to show me ads?

Not by default. Google's privacy policy still says it does not show personalized ads based on content from Drive, Gmail or Google Photos, unless you choose to make that data available to other Google services that support personalized ads, for example by connecting Gmail to Search through Personal Intelligence. Even then, Google says ads are not based directly on your inbox, though summaries and inferences from it may be used.

### What changed in Google's privacy policy on October 16, 2026?

Google added an 'unless' clause to its promise not to personalize ads with Gmail, Drive or Photos content, and a new line saying Search may process data you allow it to access to personalize content, including ads. The policy also names Personal Intelligence as a feature that can use data across services.

### How do I stop Google Search from using my Gmail and Photos?

Open Search Services Personalization in your Google Account, go to Additional Personal Intelligence, then Connected Content Apps, and disconnect Google Workspace and Google Photos. Disconnecting does not delete Search Services History, so review and delete that separately at activity.google.com.

### Can advertisers see my Gmail or Google Photos?

No. Google's Search Help page says advertisers do not get access to your Gmail inbox or Google Photos, and that sensitive categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation or health are not used to personalize ads.
