## Key takeaways

- COMEX December gold futures settled at $3,898.90 an ounce on Friday, Oct 30, 2026 (settlement 17:30 UTC), down $132.50 or 3.29%. That was the lowest settlement in Yahoo Finance's 52-week daily data, below the previous low of $3,935.70.
- Spot gold hit its lowest level since October 2025, according to CNBC and Kitco News. Kitco put the previous comparable intraday low at $3,884.61 on Oct 6, 2025.
- The settlement left gold 26.7% below its 52-week closing high of $5,318.40 from Jan 29, 2026, 9.2% below its 50-day average and 13.7% below its 200-day average.
- Reporters and analysts linked the slide to higher oil prices, firmer US inflation and growth data, Fed officials arguing for more rate hikes, and forced selling after a sharp tech-stock drop.
- In Indonesia, Antam's gold bar price fell Rp20,000 to Rp2,526,000 per gram on Oct 31, ANTARA reported.

Gold has dropped to a one-year low. December COMEX gold futures settled at $3,898.90 on Oct 30, 2026 (17:30 UTC), below $4,000 and below the lowest settlement of the previous 52 weeks, as rate-hike expectations and an equity sell-off weighed on the metal.

## Gold one-year low: the trend in numbers

Friday's fall was not a single bad day in an otherwise firm market. Gold had already lost ground over the previous week and month, and Friday's settlement confirmed a break below levels that had held for about a year. The figures below compare the Oct 30 settlement with earlier daily settlements of the most-active COMEX contract.

Futures settle at 13:30 New York time (17:30 UTC on Oct 30). Spot gold trades around the clock, so its daily change uses a different cut-off and is not directly comparable with the futures figure. Moving averages use daily settlements.

Two points stand out. First, the price is well below both its 50-day and 200-day averages, and the 50-day average ($4,294.80) is below the 200-day ($4,519.32). Technical analysts read that set-up as a downtrend. Kitco News put spot gold about 13.5% below a 200-day average near $4,490, a similar result on a different data series. Second, the drop from January's high is now larger than a quarter. Gold traded near $5,318 at the end of January and has given back more than $1,400 since.

The move also extends a monthly pattern. Gold was heading for a second straight monthly decline, down 5.9% for October at the time of a Reuters report carried by CNBC on Oct 30\. The Gold Investor newsletter put spot gold's one-month change at −7.22% and its six-month change at −16.06% as of the Oct 30 close.

## Why it is happening

### Rate-hike expectations

The main pressure is the US interest-rate outlook. The Federal Reserve held its policy range at 3.75%–4.00% on Wednesday, Oct 28, but two policymakers favored a 25-basis-point increase, according to Kitco. On Friday, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said "the FOMC needs to implement at least two more 25-basis-point rate increases," Reuters reported via Kitco, and St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said further tightening would be needed "soon." Gold pays no interest, so expectations of higher rates raise the cost of holding it. For background, see our [explainer on the Fed's October rate-hike debate](https://bullquill.com/fed-october-meeting-rate-hike-debate-explained/).

### Strong US data and inflation

US data released on Oct 29 added to that case. The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported third-quarter GDP growth of 3.4% at an annual rate, and September PCE prices rose 3.6% from a year earlier, according to Kitco and The Gold Investor. CNBC, citing Reuters, said the inflation data strengthened economists' expectations of a December hike. Peter Grant of Zaner Metals told the outlet that "ongoing concerns about inflation have multiple central banks continuing to tilt hawkish."

### Oil prices and the Iran conflict

Energy costs feed directly into those inflation worries. December Brent crude futures, which expired on Oct 30, settled at $117.64 a barrel, up 2.4%, and the January contract settled at $113.43 at the 18:30 UTC settlement, according to Kitco. Kitco said Brent rose about 13.6% in October. A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by explosive devices on Friday, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency as cited by Yahoo Finance. Philip Streible of Blue Line Futures told Kitco News that gold would keep struggling while the war with Iran keeps oil prices high. Our explainer on [how oil price shocks hit inflation and rates](https://bullquill.com/how-oil-price-shocks-hit-inflation-and-rates/) sets out that link.

### Forced selling after the tech sell-off

Gold fell even as the dollar and Treasury yields eased, which usually supports the metal. Commerzbank analysts said sharp declines in tech stocks may have triggered forced selling and margin calls, CNBC reported, and Kitco News also cited liquidation to cover margin calls. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.86% on Oct 30 as Intel dropped about 29% (see our [Nasdaq and Intel report](https://bullquill.com/nasdaq-falls-intel-plunge-ai-chip-selloff/)). Forced selling is an analyst explanation; no exchange or fund data confirming the size of those flows had been published.

### Weak physical demand in Asia

Physical buying did not cushion the fall. Demand in key Asian markets was subdued during the week, Indian buyers delayed purchases in expectation of lower prices, and demand in China stayed muted, CNBC reported, citing Reuters. No figures were given.

## Key levels being watched

- **$4,000:** the round-number level that gold futures settled below on Oct 30.
- **$3,890–$3,910, then $3,943 and $3,975:** resistance levels listed in Kitco's Oct 30 technical outlook.
- **$3,780–$3,800:** support levels in the same Kitco outlook. Waleed Said of GivTrade told Kitco News he expects gold to test $3,800 support.
- **The 200-day average (about $4,519 on futures):** the price would need to recover more than 15% to reach it.

These are levels named by analysts and data providers, not forecasts by Bullquill.

## What we know and what we don't know yet

**Known:** gold futures settled at a one-year low on Oct 30; spot gold traded at its lowest since October 2025; the Fed held rates but signalled more tightening may follow; oil rose; and tech stocks fell sharply on the same day.

**Not yet known:** how much of Friday's selling was forced liquidation rather than a change in long-term positioning; how gold ETF holdings changed in October (the latest World Gold Council figure cited by The Gold Investor was a record 4,256 tonnes at the end of September); and whether central banks bought on the dip. Commerzbank said it considered the fall "exaggerated" and expected a recovery, CNBC reported, while XS.com's Simon-Peter Massabni told Kitco News that gold is "likely to remain under selling pressure."

## What it means

For ASEAN investors, the dollar price is only half the story: local prices also move with currencies. In Indonesia, PT Antam's Logam Mulia gold bar price fell Rp20,000 to Rp2,526,000 per gram on Saturday, Oct 31, from Rp2,546,000, according to ANTARA and MerahPutih, citing the Logam Mulia website at 09:00 Western Indonesia Time (02:00 UTC). Buyers in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines face the same global price, adjusted for their exchange rates and local premiums.

The coming week brings several tests for the trend. US ISM manufacturing data are due on Nov 2, the US midterm elections on Nov 3, and US nonfarm payrolls on Nov 6, according to Kitco's calendar. In the region, Bank Negara Malaysia announces its policy decision on Nov 5 (see our [BNM preview](https://bullquill.com/malaysia-record-exports-bnm-opr-decision/)), and the Fed meets next on Dec 8–9 (see our [central bank calendar](https://bullquill.com/central-bank-meeting-calendar-2026-2027/)). For the session-by-session detail, see our [Oct 30 gold brief](https://bullquill.com/gold-daily-brief-2026-10-30/).

The trend has turned on interest rates: as long as oil keeps inflation high and the Fed signals more hikes, analysts quoted by Kitco and CNBC see pressure on a metal that pays no yield. A softer oil price or weaker US data would weaken that argument.
