## Key takeaways

- On October 20, 2026, Google started rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto. Cars with Google built-in will get it "in the coming months," according to Google.
- With the feature switched on, Gemini can use context from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search to answer questions such as "Take me to my doctor's appointment" without the driver giving an address.
- The feature is opt-in. It works only for personal Google accounts held by people aged 18 or over, and it is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or Nigeria.
- Gemini began replacing Google Assistant on Android Auto in November 2025\. It reached cars with Google built-in from April 30, 2026, starting with English-language users in the US.
- Code spotted in app teardowns, including a new Gemini animation, is not confirmed by Google and may never ship.

## What changed this week

Gemini on Android Auto can now use context from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search to answer drivers' requests, after Google began rolling out Personal Intelligence on October 20, 2026\. Cars with Google built-in will follow "in the coming months."

The practical change is that drivers no longer have to supply every detail. Without personalization, a driver who wants to reach an appointment has to say or type the address. With Personal Intelligence turned on, Gemini can look for the appointment in Google Calendar or a confirmation email in Gmail and start navigation from there. Google says the assistant can also reason across several sources at once, for example combining an email with a saved place in Google Maps.

### Examples Google gave

Google's announcement, also summarised by 9to5Google, listed these sample requests:

- Asking for a flight's departure gate and whether the flight is on time, in a single request.
- "Take me to my doctor's appointment," without looking up the address first.
- Finding an indoor restaurant along the current route that fits the driver's usual tastes, such as vegetarian options.
- Finding a car wash from a photo taken the previous week and navigating to it.
- Getting directions to a coffee shop that was discussed the day before.

Each example relies on information the user has already stored in Google's services. If a booking was never emailed to the Gmail account, or the photo is not in Google Photos, Gemini has nothing to work with.

## What Gemini already does in the car

Personal Intelligence builds on Gemini, which is already in the car. On November 20, 2025, Google began replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android Auto, according to 9to5Google's report on the launch. Google described that rollout as global, covering 45 languages, and said it would take several months to complete. Users who had already switched from Assistant to Gemini on their phones got it first.

According to Google's own Android Auto guide and the launch coverage, Gemini in the car can:

- **Navigation:** add stops to a Google Maps route, recommend places, and answer multi-part questions such as a coffee shop on the route that has a drive-thru. It also handles follow-up questions without the driver repeating the context.
- **Messages:** summarise long message threads, draft replies by voice, edit them in natural language and translate them before sending.
- **Media:** build playlists on request based on mood or activity, and answer questions about the song that is playing. 9to5Google named Spotify and YouTube Music as supported services at launch.
- **Gemini Live:** hold an open-ended spoken conversation, for example to research a destination or rehearse a presentation. 9to5Google noted that Live can struggle when mobile coverage is poor.

Drivers start a request by saying "Hey Google," tapping the microphone on the car screen, or, in cars with Google built-in, pressing the voice button on the steering wheel. Google says a new "spark" icon replaces the old Assistant icon once Gemini is active.

## Android Auto vs. Google built-in: which cars and phones

Google offers two different car platforms, and it matters which one a car uses. Android Auto runs on the driver's phone and projects onto the car's screen. Google built-in, which is based on Android Automotive, runs inside the car itself. On a Google built-in car, the driver signs in with a Google account on the car.

Sources: Google, 9to5Google, TechCrunch, android.com, Carscoops. Availability can vary by country, language, carmaker and software version.

The Volvo models that Carscoops reported in May 2026 as having received Gemini were the C40, EC40, EX40, XC40, S60, V60, XC60, V90, S90, XC90, EX90, ES90, EX30 and EX60\. Carscoops attributed the GM figure to a GM announcement. At the April launch, TechCrunch reported that drivers signed in to a Google account in a compatible car would see a prompt to upgrade to Gemini.

## Who can use Personal Intelligence

A footnote in Google's announcement sets out the eligibility rules, which match the Personal Intelligence overview on Google's Gemini website:

- A personal Google account is required. Google Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts are excluded.
- Users must be 18 or older.
- The feature is available globally except in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

Google's Gemini site also says the Photos part of Personal Intelligence is available to eligible users in the US. That site does not list a paid subscription as a requirement, but says setup is needed and that "compatibility and availability varies."

## Privacy and data settings

Google stresses that Personal Intelligence is opt-in. Its announcement says apps are not connected until the user turns the feature on, and that it can be switched off at any time in Gemini settings. Anyone who has already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on their phone gets it in Android Auto automatically. Others can turn it on from Gemini settings.

Without it, Gemini still handles navigation, music, calls and general questions. Its answers are just not tailored to the user. In cars with Google built-in, Google says personal responses are shared only when the driver is in the car with their phone connected. That matters for shared or family vehicles.

The wider Gemini privacy rules also apply. According to Google's Gemini Apps privacy help page:

- With "Keep Activity" on, chats are saved to the account and used to improve Google's services. Activity is auto-deleted after 18 months by default, and users can change this to 3 or 36 months or turn auto-delete off.
- With Keep Activity off, Google still keeps chats with the account for 72 hours to respond and to protect the service.
- Some chats are reviewed by human reviewers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, disconnected from the account. Google advises users not to enter information they would not want a reviewer to see.
- Gemini always collects general location, typically from the IP address or saved Home or Work address. It uses precise location only with permission.

For drivers, the main decision is which apps to connect. Google's personalization page says users choose which apps to link and can change those settings at any time. A driver who wants hands-free calendar lookups but does not want Gemini to search their photos can connect one and leave the other off.

## Safety and distraction questions

Google presents Gemini as a hands-free tool. Its Android Auto guide says the features are designed so drivers can "keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road." Personal Intelligence could cut down on screen use, since the driver does not have to look up an address before setting off.

Hands-free does not mean free of distraction, though. Research funded by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and carried out at the University of Utah, reported by NBC News in October 2015, found that drivers could stay mentally distracted for up to 27 seconds after using highly distracting voice-command systems. The study rated the phone assistants of the time, including Google Now, as highly distracting. That research predates generative AI assistants, and no comparable independent study of Gemini in cars was found for this article. Even so, it is a reminder that a long, open-ended conversation is different from a quick command. Carscoops made a similar point, noting that complex conversations with Gemini can distract drivers.

There is also the question of accuracy. Gemini builds its answers from the user's data, and an outdated email, a moved appointment or a mislabelled photo could send a driver to the wrong place. Checking the destination on the map before following it remains sensible.

## What is not confirmed

Some reports about Gemini in cars come from APK teardowns, where journalists inspect unreleased code inside app updates. On October 5, 2026, Android Authority reported finding a new Gemini animation in Android Auto version 17.9.664004\. It described the animation as work in progress, built on Google's newer design language. The outlet also reported that Google was working on a "Personalization" option for Gemini in Android Auto. Google's October 20 announcement covers personalization in general terms, but Google has not confirmed the animation or any specific setting layout spotted in that code. Teardown findings can change or be dropped before release.

Google has also not published a firm date for Personal Intelligence on cars with Google built-in, a list of eligible car models for that phase, or a timeline for the regions currently excluded.

## What it means

For drivers, the update turns Gemini from a general voice assistant into one that can act on their own schedule, bookings and saved places. People who already keep their lives in Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps and Google Photos will get the most out of it. People who use other email or calendar services will see little difference.

For Google, the car extends a strategy it is following across its products: connect Gemini to the services people already use, with permission, so that its answers are more specific. Rivals are pushing AI deeper into everyday products too: Anthropic's [Claude Duet app](https://bullquill.com/claude-duet-anthropic-agent-app-explained/) watches connected apps and sends a morning brief, while design platform Canva has launched [its first in-house AI image model, Craft](https://bullquill.com/canva-first-in-house-ai-image-model/). For carmakers that use Google built-in, such as GM, Volvo and Polestar, the update will arrive through Google's software rather than as a new feature they build themselves.

The trade-off is the usual one for personal AI assistants. The more data Gemini can see, the more useful it becomes, and the more it matters to read the privacy settings. Drivers outside the excluded regions can test it by turning Personal Intelligence on, connecting only the apps they are comfortable with, and reviewing their Gemini activity settings. Google's updated privacy policy also lets [connected Gmail and Photos data shape ads](https://bullquill.com/google-gmail-photos-data-ads-policy-change/) in Search.
