## Session recap

The STOXX 600 fell on Friday as a sell-off in technology shares outweighed gains in media, healthcare and consumer stocks. Losses were heaviest in the Euro Stoxx 50 and the bank-heavy southern markets, while the FTSE 100 held small gains. For the wider picture, see [Asian and global markets today](https://bullquill.com/markets/) and our [Europe brief for October 29](https://bullquill.com/europe-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-29/), when the index rallied on earnings and an ECB rate hold.

## What drove it

### US tech earnings hit European chipmakers

Technology was the weakest sector. It fell about 2% by 09:29 GMT, Reuters reported in a story carried by MarketScreener, after results from Amazon and Intel revived doubts about whether heavy AI-related capital spending will pay off. ASML fell about 5%, while STMicroelectronics, BE Semiconductor and Infineon lost between 3.3% and 4.8%, and Soitec dropped 5.7%, according to the same report. Michael Hewson of MCH Market Insights said investors "don't have an answer" on the return from that investment, according to Reuters.

Investing.com reported that Amazon's third-quarter capital expenditure reached $77.3 billion, more than double a year earlier, and that Intel forecast fourth-quarter revenue below expectations, blaming a slowdown in personal computers. The Euro Stoxx 50, a blue-chip index whose members include ASML and Infineon, fell further than the broader STOXX 600.

### Earnings support from media, healthcare and consumer stocks

Company results limited the damage. Universal Music Group rose 11.2% to the top of the STOXX 600 after higher subscription streaming revenue, Puma gained 6.9%, Sanofi 5.4% and Bayer 4%, Reuters reported in its morning update. Media was the best-performing sector, up 2.5%. AstraZeneca rose 4% after core earnings beat expectations, Investing.com said, which helped the FTSE 100 hold above Thursday's close. LSEG data cited by Investing.com show third-quarter earnings growth of 23.6% for STOXX 600 companies, the second-best since 2022, with energy profits up 139%.

### Growth beats forecasts, French data disappoint

Euro area GDP rose 0.4% quarter on quarter in the third quarter and 1.3% year on year, Eurostat's preliminary flash estimate showed, after 0.6% growth in the second quarter. Germany grew 0.2% and Spain 0.6%, Italy was flat and France contracted 0.1%. Separately, INSEE said French harmonised consumer prices rose 3.8% on the year in October, up from 3.4% in September, with energy prices up 24.1%. Reuters said French inflation was at its fastest annual rate since December 2023.

### Oil and bonds

Brent front-month futures rose 2.39% to $113.45 a barrel at 16:30 UTC on Friday, Yahoo Finance data show. Oilprice.com reported that Brent hit $117 in Asian trade on Friday after the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said an outbound tanker caught fire about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, after explosive devices were attached to its hull. UKMTO later said the crew was safe. Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed four tankers struck mines in the strait and disputed a U.S. Central Command statement that the main transit routes had been cleared, Oilprice.com said; the claims had not been independently confirmed. Government bond yields edged lower: Trading Economics linked demand for German Bunds to concerns about France's fiscal outlook and the Middle East conflict.

## Political & policy watch

### France

Political unrest, rising living costs and high government debt pushed French bond yields to multi-year highs, Reuters reported. Investing.com said French 10-year yields rose above 5% amid riots in France. Friday's data added to the picture: French output shrank 0.1% in the third quarter, according to Eurostat, while inflation picked up.

### ECB and Bank of England

The European Central Bank held its deposit rate at 2.50% on Thursday, and President Christine Lagarde will step down in February 2027, Investing.com reported; our report on [Lagarde's decision to step down](https://bullquill.com/lagarde-to-step-down-ecb-february-2027/) has more detail. In the UK, money markets are almost fully pricing in a Bank of England rate rise on November 5, according to Trading Economics.

### Middle East and the US

Traders were watching for any escalation involving Iran after the US midterm elections on November 3, Oilprice.com reported. Energy prices remain a key channel from the conflict to European inflation and to oil-importing economies in Asia. Our earlier analysis of [WTI crude's move below $100](https://bullquill.com/wti-crude-oil-below-100-correction-trend/) explains how quickly oil sentiment can swing.

## Risk checklist for readers

- **Sector weightings.** European indexes hold different mixes of sectors, so global chip or bank news can move the Euro Stoxx 50, the STOXX 600 and the FTSE 100 by very different amounts.
- **Energy-driven inflation.** With French energy prices up 24.1% on the year, oil headlines can shift inflation and rate expectations quickly.
- **Front-month oil quotes.** Continuous futures prices can jump when one contract expires and the next becomes the reference, so check the contract month.
- **Flash data are revised.** Eurostat's GDP flash is based on partial country data and will be updated on November 13.
- **Currency translation.** Investors outside Europe, including in Asia, see returns change with EUR and GBP exchange rates as well as with share prices.
- **Closing prices differ by provider.** Quotes before and after closing auctions vary; STOXX and the exchanges publish the official reference values.
