## Session recap

The Europe stock market today gave back Wednesday's gains. Three forces hit at once: AI-linked stocks fell after US tech earnings, oil rose on new attacks in Saudi Arabia, and French borrowing costs rose. London fell least among the major indexes; the FTSE 100 holds relatively few technology stocks. Health care and food stocks were the only clear gainers.

## What drove it

### AI spending worries after US tech earnings

Technology and electrification stocks led the losses. Meta's results revived concerns about the cost and payback of AI investment, Reuters reported. dpa-AFX said Siemens Energy fell 8.6%, Infineon 6.0% and Siemens more than 4%. In Paris, BFM Bourse said Legrand fell 5.8% and Schneider Electric 5.4%. Market strategist Stephen Innes told dpa-AFX that AI is in a "difficult phase between technological validation and financial success." Background on Meta's funding plan is in our report on [Meta's non-voting share class](https://bullquill.com/meta-non-voting-share-class-ai-spending/).

### Oil and the attacks in Saudi Arabia

Debris from an intercepted drone fell near a processing plant at Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield on October 21, killing two people. The National reported this, and Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry said operations were not affected. Hours later, an attack on Dammam airport killed one person, according to Saudi aviation authorities (see our [Dammam airport report](https://bullquill.com/dammam-airport-attack-one-killed-eight-injured/)). Reuters reported that oil rose more than 2% on fears of wider escalation. Higher energy prices are a direct cost for Europe, a net importer of oil and gas.

### French bond yields

France's 10-year yield hit 5.104% during the session, its highest since July 2002, according to Zonebourse. The spread to German Bunds was above 173 basis points, the widest since 2011\. RTTNews said French 10-year debt yielded more than US Treasuries for the first time since 2013\. Zonebourse linked the move to doubts about France's ability to control its deficit. "It is a vicious circle," Charlotte de Montpellier, an economist at ING France, told BFM Bourse, referring to rising borrowing costs and weak growth. Italy's spread to Bunds widened to 127 basis points (Milano Finanza), and European banks fell more than 3% (Trading Economics).

### Company results

Hermès fell about 5% by the close, according to BFM Bourse and Trading Economics, after an earlier drop of more than 7% (Reuters). The company reported third-quarter revenue up 4.3% at constant exchange rates to €4.1 billion, with Asia-Pacific excluding Japan flat ([our Hermès analysis](https://bullquill.com/hermes-q3-sales-growth-slows-china/)). Barclays ended little changed after its third-quarter results. The bank also said about 5,000 jobs would go ([details](https://bullquill.com/barclays-cut-5000-jobs-ai/)). SAP rose 3.2% after beating forecasts, UCB 12.2% after raising its 2026 guidance, and Nestlé on stronger sales, Reuters and dpa-AFX reported. In London, LSEG rose 4% after agreeing to buy Octus and raising its guidance, The Market Reporter said.

### Metals and miners

Basic resources fell more than 3.5% as metals declined (Trading Economics). Fresnillo, Antofagasta and Anglo American each lost more than 5% in London, and December gold futures fell 2.11% to $4,062.35 an ounce, Investing.com reported.

## Political & policy watch

### France

Cost-of-living protests turned violent in October, and curfews followed in parts of Paris and other cities, CBS News reported. More demonstrations are planned for October 24\. The next presidential election is due in April 2027\. Our earlier report covers the [protests and the government response](https://bullquill.com/europe-cost-of-living-protests-france-riots-2026/). Next session: our [Europe stocks brief for Oct. 23](https://bullquill.com/europe-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-23/).

### United Kingdom

The UK Budget is due on October 28\. Bloomberg reported on October 15 that a higher tax on banks was among the options being considered. No decision has been announced. Any change would matter for the FTSE 100, where banks such as Barclays and HSBC carry a large weight.

### Middle East

The National reported that Washington has ordered non-emergency government staff and their families to leave Saudi Arabia, citing Houthi attacks on airports and infrastructure. The Houthis had not commented on the Dammam attack, the newspaper said.

## What it means

**Analysis.** Thursday's losses came from three separate sources at once: doubts about AI spending, higher oil prices and pressure on French debt. Southern European markets, where banks make up a large share of the indexes, fell the most. France now pays more than the United States to borrow for ten years, according to BFM Bourse and RTTNews. That makes the October 24 protests and the government's budget plans more important for markets. The UK Budget and the ECB decision next week are the next scheduled tests.

## What to watch next

- **October 24:** planned demonstrations in France.
- **October 27–28:** US Federal Reserve policy meeting.
- **October 28:** UK Budget.
- **October 29:** European Central Bank rate decision.
- **November 5:** Bank of England decision and Monetary Policy Report.
- **Ongoing:** European third-quarter earnings, oil supply news from the Gulf, and French bond auctions and spreads.

## Risk checklist for readers

- **Index mix matters.** The FTSE 100 is heavy in miners, banks and energy; the DAX and CAC 40 in industrial, tech and luxury stocks. The same news can move them very differently.
- **Read the bond spread.** A spread is the extra yield a government pays over Germany. A wider spread raises that country's borrowing costs and often hits its banks.
- **Geopolitical headlines move fast.** Reports of attacks or talks can move oil within minutes. Early accounts are often revised.
- **Currency effects.** For investors outside the euro area or the UK, changes in EUR/USD or GBP/USD affect returns alongside share prices.
- **Scheduled events.** A Budget and a central bank decision in the same week can cause sharp moves in bonds and bank stocks.
- **Check time stamps and official data.** Closing figures differ slightly between providers. Exchanges, STOXX and the ECB publish the reference values.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between the STOXX Europe 600 and the Euro Stoxx 50?

The STOXX Europe 600 tracks 600 large, mid and small companies across 17 European countries, including the UK and Switzerland. The Euro Stoxx 50 covers 50 large companies from euro area countries only, so it is more concentrated in big names such as ASML, SAP and LVMH.

### What is a bond spread, such as the France–Germany spread?

It is the difference between two countries' government bond yields for the same maturity, usually shown in basis points (100 basis points equal one percentage point). Germany is the usual euro area benchmark, so a wider spread means investors demand more extra yield to lend to that country.

### What moves European stock markets?

Common drivers include European Central Bank and Bank of England policy, inflation and growth data, company earnings, energy prices (Europe is a net importer of oil and gas), currency moves, and political events such as budgets and elections. Global factors, especially US markets and Middle East tensions, also matter.
