## Key takeaways

- Bitcoin traded near $82,800 early on October 21, up about 1.6% over 24 hours. It is still roughly a third below its all-time high of $126,080 (CoinGecko), set in October 2025.
- The total crypto market was valued at about $2.80 trillion. Bitcoin accounted for about 59.5% of it and ether for about 10.7%.
- Fund flows diverged. US spot bitcoin ETFs took in about $527 million on October 19, their largest daily inflow since September 22, led by about $665 million into BlackRock's IBIT, more than the net total, as other funds saw outflows. Spot ether ETFs lost about $103 million, their fourth straight day of outflows.
- Even after that inflow, bitcoin ETFs were still slightly negative for October as a whole.
- Reported 24-hour liquidations on October 20 were modest compared with earlier in the month, at roughly $155–$300 million depending on the source and time window.
- On regulation, the SEC's comment period on its "Regulation Crypto Assets" proposal closed on October 20\. The CFTC is consulting on rules for leveraged retail crypto trading after the CLARITY Act stalled in the Senate.

The weekly and monthly columns tell more than the daily bounce. Bitcoin is roughly flat over seven days and up about 2% over 30 days. Ether is down more than 7% over 30 days, and most large altcoins are lower over the month. Bitcoin's dominance near 60% is consistent with that: when the market is cautious, money tends to stay in the largest asset rather than spread into smaller tokens.

## Fund flows: the cash-flow picture

US spot ETFs are now one of the clearest public measures of money moving into or out of crypto. The latest data showed a sharp split between bitcoin and ether products.

Source: TFTC Bitcoin ETF Flows tracker, October 2026 (CC BY 4.0). Farside Investors puts the October 19 figure at $526.7 million and the month-to-date total at about -$88 million. The small differences come from data revisions and rounding.

Monday's inflow was concentrated in one fund. Reports from FXStreet and Bitcoin.com, citing Farside and SoSoValue, said BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) took in about $665 million, its largest single-day intake of 2026\. That was more than the total for all funds, because Fidelity's FBTC lost about $83.6 million and Grayscale's GBTC about $54.9 million. FXStreet, citing SoSoValue, put cumulative net inflows into US spot bitcoin ETFs since launch at about $57.4 billion, with net assets around $105 billion.

Ether funds moved the other way. Spot ether ETFs recorded about $103 million of net outflows on October 19, their fourth straight day of withdrawals. FXStreet reported that their only inflow since September 29 was $25 million on October 13\. Cumulative net inflows stood at about $12.8 billion, with net assets near $15 billion. US spot XRP products saw small outflows on October 16 and 17.

**Analysis.** A single day of inflows concentrated in one fund does not establish a trend. Before Monday, bitcoin ETFs had seen two weeks of net outflows, about $681 million and $229 million, according to Bitcoin.com. The gap between bitcoin and ether flows is consistent with bitcoin's rising market share: institutional money that is still coming in has favored the largest asset.

## Leverage and liquidations

Forced closures of leveraged positions were limited on October 20 compared with earlier in the month. CoinDesk, citing CoinGlass, reported about $155 million of liquidations over 24 hours as of Tuesday morning US time, down 54.7% from the previous day. Other snapshots from the same day, citing CoinGlass, ranged up to about $297 million. By comparison, The Block reported about $556 million of liquidations around October 6 and about $771 million around October 12, when bitcoin fell below $82,000.

CoinDesk also reported that bitcoin options traders on Deribit had been paying more for downside protection than for upside exposure. Annualized bitcoin funding rates on perpetual futures were about 8.8%. These readings describe how traders were positioned at that moment. They are not forecasts. Demand for hedging is also reaching fund products: our explainer on [how bitcoin downside protection ETFs work](https://bullquill.com/bitcoin-downside-protection-etfs-explained/) covers BlackRock's options-based filing built around IBIT.

## Why it moved

- **Moving with stocks and AI sentiment.** CoinDesk linked bitcoin's dip to about $81,400 early on October 20 to the sell-off in Asian chip stocks. The rebound to the $82,000s followed a firmer Wall Street session in which the Dow rose about 1%.
- **Oil and rates.** Brent near $110 and the 10-year US Treasury yield above 5.1% have weighed on assets without yields, crypto included, as investors price a Federal Reserve that raised rates in September.
- **Flows.** Strong bitcoin ETF inflows on October 19 helped limit losses, while outflows from ether funds coincided with ether's weaker 30-day performance.

## Regulation: what changed

- **SEC "Regulation Crypto Assets."** The proposal was issued on August 18 and published in the Federal Register on August 21, and its comment period closed on October 20, 2026\. According to Yahoo Finance's summary, it would create a startup exemption for token offerings of up to $5 million over four years and a fundraising exemption with tiers of $20 million and $75 million per 12 months. It would also add a safe harbor allowing some tokens to stop being treated as investment contracts once promised managerial efforts are completed, and cap retail investment at 10% of income or net worth. The rule is still a proposal.
- **CFTC consultation.** On October 5, 2026, the CFTC asked for public comment on an advance notice of proposed rulemaking covering leveraged, margined or financed retail crypto transactions. It includes a new "crypto asset market" category of registered exchange. Comments are due 60 days after Federal Register publication. Chairman Michael S. Selig said Americans "deserve clarity, certainty, and consumer protections" in crypto markets.
- **Congress.** The CLARITY Act market-structure bill failed a Senate cloture vote, 49–50, in mid-September, according to The Defiant and other reports. Market-structure rules are therefore being written by the agencies for now. Some lawyers note that agency rules are easier to reverse than legislation.

## What it means

**Analysis.** The crypto market is behaving like a high-beta extension of the broader risk trade. It is sensitive to AI-driven equity swings, oil and US real yields, while its own flows depend heavily on a few large ETFs. Regulation in the US is moving through agency rulemaking rather than legislation, which makes the details more open to change. Bitcoin's dominance near 60% and ether's ETF outflows suggest investors are concentrating risk rather than spreading it across tokens. Crypto-assets remain highly volatile, and none of this indicates where prices will go.

## Data notes

CoinGecko's global endpoint reported a 24-hour market-cap change of about -1.1% at the same time as its coin-level data showed gains for every major asset. Because the two do not match, we have not used the aggregate 24-hour figure. Liquidation totals vary widely between providers and time windows, so we report a range. ETF figures for October 20 had not been published at the time of writing. Readers who want to check exchange flows, fees or hash rate for themselves can follow our step-by-step guide on [how to read on-chain data with block explorers](https://bullquill.com/how-to-read-on-chain-data-beginners/).

**Risk warning:** Crypto-assets are high-risk. Their value can fall, and you could lose some or all of the money you invest. You may also be unable to sell or withdraw when you want to, or only at a loss.
