Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo each raised console prices in 2026, and the increases landed just before the busiest stretch of the gaming calendar: a holiday season with Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled for November 19.

This explainer sets out what each company announced, what they said (and did not say) about why, and how the rush to build AI data centers fits into the picture.

## What changed, platform by platform

**PlayStation.** On March 27, 2026, Sony [announced new PS5 prices](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/03/27/new-price-changes-for-ps5-ps5-pro-and-playstation-portal-remote-player/?ref=bullquill.com) that took effect April 2\. In the US, the standard PS5 went to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99 and the PS5 Pro to $899.99\. Seven months earlier, an [August 2025 increase](https://blog.playstation.com/2025/08/20/playstation-5-price-changes-in-the-u-s/?ref=bullquill.com) had set those models at $549.99, $499.99 and $749.99\. Sony later [added Southeast Asian prices](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/03/27/20260327-ps/?ref=bullquill.com) effective May 1, 2026, including IDR 11,399,000 for the standard PS5 in Indonesia and SGD 849 in Singapore.

**Xbox.** On June 25, 2026, Microsoft [said](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/06/25/xbox-console-price-update/?ref=bullquill.com) Xbox console prices would rise worldwide from August 1, 2026: by US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models. It also said it was "sunsetting" its 2 TB model. Microsoft noted that it had already raised US console prices by $20 to $70 the previous October.

**Nintendo.** In a [notice dated May 8, 2026](https://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/en/2026/260508.html?ref=bullquill.com), Nintendo said the Switch 2 would rise from $449.99 to $499.99 in the US, from C$629.99 to C$679.99 in Canada, and from €469.99 to €499.99 on its European store, all from September 1, 2026\. In Japan, the Japanese-language Switch 2 went from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 on May 25, and older Switch models rose as well. Nintendo said revisions would follow in other regions.

| Console (US list price) | Before latest rise | Now | Effective |
| ---------------------------------- | ------------------ | ------------- | ----------------- |
| PS5 | $549.99 | $649.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $499.99 | $599.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| PS5 Pro | $749.99 | $899.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $449.99 | $499.99 | September 1, 2026 |
| Xbox Series (512 GB / 1 TB models) | n/a | +$100 / +$150 | August 1, 2026 |

Microsoft gave the size of its increase rather than a new price list, so the table shows the increase only. Nintendo's US and Canadian prices exclude tax; its European price includes it.

## What the companies said about why

Only one of the three named the cause in its price announcement.

Microsoft was direct. It wrote that "console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x" and added: "we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027." It also said consoles are "typically not sold at a profit, but instead for less than they cost to make."

Sony's March post did not mention memory; it cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape." Its [first-quarter results presentation](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000313838/000110465926088922/tm2621477d2%5F6k.htm?ref=bullquill.com), filed on July 31, addressed consoles more directly. Discussing how memory market conditions affect PS5 hardware, Sony said "we have secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume for FY26," a fiscal year that runs to March 31, 2027, and that its plan for hardware profitability that year had not changed.

Nintendo's May notice referred only to "changes in market conditions," with an impact "expected to extend over the medium to long term." Three months earlier, at a [February 3 results briefing](https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/260204e.pdf?ref=bullquill.com), President Shuntaro Furukawa said costlier memory had so far made little difference to the margins Nintendo earns on Switch 2 hardware. A longer squeeze, stretching into the following year, was another matter: in that case, he said, "it may put pressure on profitability."

## Where AI comes in

Consoles compete for memory chips with phones, PCs and servers, and AI data centers have become a major source of new demand. In December 2025, the US memory maker Micron [announced](https://investors.micron.com/news-releases/news-release-details/micron-announces-exit-crucial-consumer-business?ref=bullquill.com) that it would exit its Crucial consumer business, explaining: "The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage." Micron said Crucial shipments through the consumer channel would continue only until the end of its fiscal second quarter, in February 2026.

**Analysis:** Read together, these statements describe one pressure seen from different angles. When memory makers can sell their output to data center customers, consumer devices built from similar components pay more for them. Consoles are especially exposed because, as Microsoft points out, they are often sold below cost, leaving little room to absorb a jump in component prices. Microsoft expects another doubling by fall 2027, but that is a company forecast, not a certainty.

## Why the timing matters

Take-Two's [August 7 earnings release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000946581/000162828026054580/ttwo1q27earningsrelease.htm?ref=bullquill.com) lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, on two platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

**Analysis:** One of the most anticipated games in years will launch only on consoles that cost more than they did in January. For a US buyer, the 2026 increases add $100 or $150 to a PS5 or an Xbox, depending on the model. Sony's statement about securing memory speaks to supply, not price, so it should not be read as a promise about what consoles will cost next year.

## What it means for you

- **Check the date on any price you see.** Many retailer listings, reviews and buying guides predate the 2026 increases.
- **Regional prices move at different times.** Nintendo changed Japanese prices in May and Western prices in September; Sony's Southeast Asian prices followed a month after its US, UK, European and Japanese ones.
- **Official lower-cost routes exist.** Microsoft's announcement mentions trade-ins through participating retailers and refurbished consoles sold by Microsoft at discounts of as much as US$100.
