The Shanghai Composite traded between 3,595.26 and 3,660.21, closing near its low, according to Yahoo Finance. At the midday break it had been down only 0.3% at 3,640, The Standard reported, so most of the loss came in the afternoon. Shanghai turnover was 764.22 billion yuan and Shenzhen turnover 910.23 billion yuan, RTHK said, and more than 4,500 mainland stocks fell, according to The Paper. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng moved between 22,947.96 and 23,400.02 (Yahoo Finance); turnover was HK$214.32 billion and the index gained 0.9% for the week, RTHK reported.

## What drove it

### AI selloff spread from Wall Street to Chinese tech

The main driver was a global selloff in AI stocks after renewed doubts over the returns on heavy AI spending. Shares of Alphabet, Amazon and Intel fell in the US on concerns about AI cash burn, Reuters reported via Business Recorder. On the mainland, optical module maker Eoptolink fell 14% on Friday and 50% over the month, and the CSI 5G communications gauge slumped 6.2%, RTHK reported. The STAR50 index dropped more than 5%, according to The Paper.

The Paper listed telecom equipment, software, semiconductors, electronic components and aerospace among the weakest sectors. Shipping, liquor, oil and gas, airports, coal and banks rose as investors moved into defensive shares.

Kenneth Fong, head of China internet research at UBS, said some stocks were treating the AI spending peak as a permanent earnings burden while placing limited value on a later normalisation of cash flow or successful AI monetisation, Reuters reported via Business Recorder.

### Hong Kong rebounded on financials and property

Hong Kong-listed internet companies bucked the mainland trend in the morning, Reuters reported via Business Recorder. By the close, financial stocks had risen 1.3% and mainland property developers 2.8%, according to RTHK. The Hang Seng Tech Index gained only 0.29% and stayed near its lowest level in two years, RTHK said. Trading Economics, in a report published on TradingView, cited a 57% rise in Sinopec's third-quarter profit as support for energy shares.

### Month-end and fund flows

Friday was the last trading day of October. Mainland investors had sold a net HK$24 billion of Hong Kong shares in October, on track for the largest monthly outflow since 2021, Trading Economics reported. The CSI 300's 8.5% monthly drop was its steepest since early 2016, according to RTHK.

### Read-across for ASEAN investors

Indonesia's IHSG fell 0.80% to 5,057.05 on Friday, after Thursday's 3.49% drop. CNBC Indonesia said utilities, basic materials and real estate were the weakest sectors, with BYAN, BBRI, BREN, BRPT and TPIA weighing on the index. It cited a weaker Wall Street, strong US data and rising US PCE inflation as negative catalysts and did not link the move to China. For Jakarta's previous session, see [our October 29 Indonesia brief](https://bullquill.com/indonesia-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-29/). The sources cited here did not confirm a direct link between China's selloff and Southeast Asian markets on Friday.

## Political & policy watch

- **Fifth plenum ends:** The Communist Party's Central Committee met in Beijing from October 26 to 29, according to the communique published by Xinhua. It called for growth to advance steadily and to "tap deeper into the potential of domestic demand," and adopted a resolution on party self-governance. The communique did not announce specific stimulus measures or mention capital markets.
- **Next Party Congress:** The communique said the 21st National Congress will be held in Beijing in the second half of 2027.
- **Exchange-rate management:** Friday's 6.7138 fixing was 590 pips weaker than the Reuters estimate of 6.6548, per FXStreet. The official fixing has stayed on the weaker side of market estimates even as it moved slightly stronger on Friday. The fixing sets the centre of the onshore yuan's 2% daily trading band.

## What to watch next

- **October 31, 01:30 UTC:** China's official October manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs from the National Bureau of Statistics. A reading above 50 signals expansion.
- **November 2:** Mainland and Hong Kong markets reopen after the weekend; first reaction to the PMI data.
- **November 3:** US midterm elections, which can move US rates and the dollar, both relevant for Hong Kong's dollar-pegged market.
- **November 9, 01:30 UTC:** China's October CPI and PPI (National Bureau of Statistics).

## Risk checklist for readers

- **Tech-board volatility.** ChiNext fell 4.13% on Friday after a 4.45% drop on Thursday; growth indices can move several times more than the Shanghai Composite.
- **Overseas AI sentiment.** Results and spending plans from US tech firms have repeatedly moved Chinese AI hardware stocks this week.
- **Diverging markets.** Hong Kong and the mainland can move in opposite directions on the same day because of different sector weights and investor bases.
- **Scheduled data.** PMI figures released on a weekend are only priced in when markets reopen, which can widen Monday moves.
- **Currency effects.** The onshore yuan may trade up to 2% either side of the PBOC midpoint, which changes returns for overseas investors.
- **Check final figures.** Vendor data can differ slightly; exchange and index-provider releases are the reference for final values.
