## Session recap

China and Hong Kong stocks fell sharply in the October 22 session. Technology shares led the decline, and Hong Kong fell further than Shanghai. Hong Kong changes are calculated from the previous closes reported by Xinhua via Bastille Post (Hang Seng 23,651.87, Tech 3,994.77, China Enterprises 7,943.41). One Cailian Press report gave the Hang Seng's fall as 3.09%. The CSI 300 figure is from a data aggregator, not an exchange release. A higher midpoint means a weaker yuan. Spot yuan traded near 6.6749 per dollar at 02:38 UTC, Reuters reported via Business Recorder. For the latest full day available, October 21, Futu reported southbound net sales of HK$4.435 billion, the sixth straight day of net selling according to BigGo Finance.

## What drove it

### Regulation hits China's internet platforms

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said on October 21 that it had called major online platforms to a meeting in Beijing. Those named included Taobao and Tmall, JD.com, Pinduoduo, Kuaishou and Douyin. Regulators asked the platforms to tighten product-quality control and improve consumer protection, The Arabian Post reported. Alibaba fell about 6.1%, its biggest drop since August 24, and was the largest drag on the Hang Seng, Bloomberg reported. Investing.com reported falls of 4.28% for JD.com, 4.55% for Meituan, 6.53% for NetEase and 10.92% for Lenovo. One report said the statement announced no immediate penalties.

### Doubts about AI returns

Global doubts about whether heavy AI spending will pay off weighed on Chinese hardware names, Investing.com and IBTimes reported. In Shenzhen, optical-module makers Eoptolink and Zhongji Innolight fell 12.3% and 8.8%, according to Trading Economics. The selling matched falls elsewhere in Asia. Our [South Korea](https://bullquill.com/south-korea-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-21/) and [Japan](https://bullquill.com/japan-stocks-daily-brief-2026-10-21/) briefs cover the same AI-hardware theme.

### Earnings and fading stimulus hopes

CATL's mainland and Hong Kong shares fell about 10% on Wednesday after the company reported slower third-quarter profit growth and cited fierce competition, IBTimes reported. That set a weak tone for Thursday. Third-quarter GDP growth of 4.5% beat forecasts, and Maybank analysts said steady headline growth makes new fiscal and monetary stimulus less urgent, Reuters reported via Yahoo Finance. Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that the state has bought about $43 billion of shares since July, but warned that state buying alone may not produce a lasting recovery.

### Flows, currency and commodities

Mainland investors sold Hong Kong stocks through Stock Connect for six straight sessions to October 21, according to Futu and BigGo Finance. The PBOC's midpoint was set far weaker than the market estimate. Analysts cited by Business Recorder read this as the central bank slowing the yuan's rise rather than reversing it. IBTimes also cited Brent crude above $110 a barrel after attacks in Saudi Arabia (see our [report on the Dammam airport attack](https://bullquill.com/dammam-airport-attack-one-killed-eight-injured/)).

### Sentiment and technicals (descriptive)

The CSI 300 has fallen for ten straight weeks, according to LSEG data cited by CNBC. The Hang Seng Tech Index hit its lowest level since September 2024 and is down more than 30% this year, Investing.com reported. Xinhua said motor makers and construction-machinery stocks led the few gainers.

## Political & policy watch

- **Platform oversight:** SAMR's meeting asked platforms to take on stronger "gatekeeper" duties, set up quality management systems and publish quality indices, The Arabian Post reported. No fines or new rules have been announced.
- **Stimulus stance:** On October 20, the PBOC held its one-year loan prime rate at 3.0% and its five-year rate at 3.5%, Reuters reported via Investing.com.
- **US–China trade truce:** US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the truce runs to January 10, 2027, CNBC reported. However, several measures, including China's pause on some rare-earth export controls and 178 US tariff exclusions, are due to lapse on November 9–10 unless they are formally extended.
- **Europe:** IBTimes reported that the EU signalled new trade safeguards on Monday, adding to worries about access for Chinese exports. Details have not yet been published.

## What to watch next

- **October 27, 01:30 UTC:** China's September industrial profits (NBS release calendar).
- **October 27:** HSBC board meeting on third-quarter results, according to The Standard.
- **October 27–28:** US Federal Reserve policy meeting. Hong Kong's dollar peg ties local rates to Fed decisions.
- **October 31, 01:30 UTC:** China's official October PMIs (NBS).
- **November 9, 01:30 UTC:** China's October CPI and PPI (NBS).
- **November 9–10:** scheduled lapse of several US–China truce measures unless they are formally extended.
- **November 16, 02:00 UTC:** China's October activity data (NBS).

## Risk checklist for readers

- **Regulatory headlines move fast.** A meeting can hit platform stocks before any rule exists. Read the regulator's own statement, not only summaries.
- **Index concentration.** A few platform and battery companies carry heavy weights, so single-company news can move a whole index.
- **"Bear market" is a label, not a forecast.** A 20% fall from a peak describes the past, not what comes next.
- **Currency effects.** The onshore yuan trades within 2% of the PBOC midpoint, and exchange rates change returns for overseas investors.
- **Scheduled events.** PMIs, the Fed meeting and the trade-truce dates can increase volatility around their release times.
- **Figures differ.** Early vendor data can vary slightly. Check exchange and index-provider releases for final values.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between the Hang Seng Index and the CSI 300?

The Hang Seng Index tracks large companies listed in Hong Kong, including many mainland internet platforms and global banks. The CSI 300 tracks 300 large A-shares listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen, which are traded mainly by domestic investors. The two can move differently on the same day.

### What does a bear market mean for the CSI 300?

A bear market is a common label for a fall of 20% or more from a recent peak. It describes what has already happened and does not predict future moves.

### What is the PBOC's daily yuan midpoint?

Each trading morning the People's Bank of China sets a central parity rate for the yuan against the dollar. The onshore yuan may trade up to 2% either side of that rate during the day, so the fixing is watched as a signal of the central bank's preferences.
