## Bangladesh vs West Indies 1st Test: toss and team news

Shanto chose to bat first in Mirpur after winning the toss, ESPNcricinfo reported in its toss report, published at 03:28 UTC. AP also reported that Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat.

The main team news was the absence of Mushfiqur Rahim, the 106-Test veteran. He hurt his right index finger during Tuesday's practice session, according to Prothom Alo, which reported that X-rays showed no serious damage but that he was ultimately left out of the XI. ESPNcricinfo said Bangladesh made two changes, with Towhid Hridoy and Shoriful Islam coming in for Mushfiqur and Ebadot Hossain. Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, who returned to the 15-man squad, was not in the XI.

Bangladesh picked three spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan, with Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful as the seamers. West Indies chose Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph as their fast bowlers plus all-rounder Justin Greaves, and left out veteran Kemar Roach. Bishop, 26, joins Jomel Warrican and captain Roston Chase as spin options, and Amir Jangoo keeps wicket, ESPNcricinfo reported. Uncapped batter Kevin Wickham did not make the XI.

## Background: head-to-head and the Mirpur pitch

West Indies have the stronger Test record in this fixture. CricTracker's figures show 22 Tests between the sides since 2002, with West Indies winning 15, Bangladesh five, and two drawn. Wisden noted this is West Indies' first tour of Bangladesh since their 2-0 Test series win there in 2021.

Both squads are built with Asian conditions in mind. CricTracker's preview put the average first-innings total at the ground at 328 across 30 Tests, with 15 won by the side batting first, which helps explain Shanto's decision to bat.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said the team had set goals at the start of the cycle and that "playing Bangladesh in their own conditions will be challenging, and we're ready for that," according to the ICC. The ICC reported that West Indies were eighth in the World Test Championship standings when the squad was named. Shai Hope was rested ahead of the Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier and Alzarri Joseph was withdrawn for workload management, the ICC said.

## What it means

For West Indies, this series is the last chance to add points in the current World Test Championship cycle. Leaving out Roach for a debutant spinner shows how much they expect turn in Mirpur, and puts the new-ball burden on Seales and Shamar Joseph.

For Bangladesh, home conditions are their best chance to improve a lopsided head-to-head record. Batting first without Mushfiqur puts more weight on Shanto, Litton Das and Mehidy in the middle order, and a first-innings total near the ground average of 328 would give their three spinners something to bowl at.

*Correction (28 Oct 2026): An earlier version of this article said play would start at 10:00 local time (04:00 UTC) and that the toss had not been made public. Play began at 09:30 local time (03:30 UTC), and the toss had already taken place.*
